Absolutely, we all need to cross pollinate. All the grappling sports can learn something. I think many of the competition rules in judo have ruined it too. In particular, banning leg grabs, and ending the yuko which has lead to massive score inflation. I also preferred the drama of flag raising over these tedious golden score bouts. I am glad they’re finally allowing more time for groundwork though. It’s usually very clear when a fighter is skilled, is aiming to execute a killer move and making progress. Maybe penalise those feigning intent , just trying to waste time as they do in tachiwaza.

Old school Judokas are very familiar with leg grabs like morote gari, kuchiki daochi, sukui nage, and the pick up throws like kata guruma and te guruma and leg grabs can be evade as soon as they are about to be launched and that's by good quick footwork (Tai Sabaki)and moves like kuchiki Daoshi (single leg take down can be countered with an Uchimata for exemple

Judo is 80/20 standing and ground. BJJ is 80/20 ground and standing. Sambo is definitely more 60/40 standing and ground. More complete, definitely. However, a jack of all traits can't always beat a specialist in their field.

Sambists in the UFC and other MMA promotions train other arts and train with arts they know they'll be going up against, so their ground fighting becomes more complete. I've been practicing Sambo after 7 years of practicing Judo, and I've gotta say, all of these facts had to be learned the hard way and learn to adapt to different competitions or spars. Due to the ruling system in Judo, most of the leg work standing has been quite forgotten, but it was refreshing to see that Sambo has a bigger degree of freedom by using a bigger mixture of styles. Pf course the Judo background helped a lot in mking a good base and optimizing the use of force and impactful attacks, but learning Sambo has been an experience starting from scratch and positively reformulating my own combative strategies.
    Good content!

@@pablotapiafineart Sambo was created with a perspective of a combat system to disarm and neutralize for war times, so its aim is to be quick and effective. Now in terms of self defense, more than the art itself, is having a proper reaction more than anything. But in terms of "completeness", Sambo has more tools than Judo for self defense, but if you know self defense tactics based on Judo, it will be highly efficient without a doubt.

Question: How do you plan to get Sambo in the Olympics? ( not trying to be negative I really like Sambo) I ask because Wrestling almost got removed from Olympic games, and Judo had to remove leg attacks in order to stay in the Olympic games because it looked too much like wrestling. Perhaps there needs to be a new form of Olympic, one for only combat sports. You'll get Bjj, Sambo, Judo, Boxing, Kendo, Hema, Wrestling( freestyle and Greco), Sumo etc.

Hi! I know I'm a couple of years late. However I'm going to try and steer you into a direction from a Judo perspective (since grappling broadly applies) and generally speaking, there should be some concensus amongst the advice you have heared.
The big thing is lack of grips, however the use of your sword in positions where your sword might be hooked/trapped around your opponent might be beneficial.
There are a few throws that come to mind:
O-goshi: When you are in a clinch and have an underhook (your arm under your opponents arm), be it shield or sword.
Koshi-guruma: You may have overhook(s) instead, so you can do a similar movement by taking out your opponents head like you are slashing with a scycle.
O-uchi-gari: The hands don't necessarily matter, though the technicalities can benefit you. What matters is that in a clinch you can drive down on your opponents shield and reap the leg thier shield is on (which should be thier left if you are right handed).
Soto-Makikomi: You may be in a situation where your opponent my deflect your attack and as a result your arms may be guided to one side of your opponents body.
You can overhook your opponent's (if your opponent deflects using his left hand shield you would be forced to the right side of his body) right arm and wrap around to accomplish soto-makikomi.
Those were a few suggestions based on only conjecture since I personally have not done any armored combat.
Though the core concepts and principals still apply.
Ultimately, you should try and find what not only works, but apply solutions to situations you most find/put yourself in, and not on what possibly can happen.
Hope this helps, and sorry for the late response!

The problem is the aesthetics. To be respected as oplympic discipline you must think in the spectators.
They loved Bruce Lee (who may have been just a modell) and Muhammad Ali. They wanted to see Ali stop Foreman. The last great wrestler was Wilfried Dietrich because he showed elegance by throwing Chris Taylor spectacularly. The spectators don't want to see slow "raw" strength they want to see elegant power which seems very easy when you just see it
