I’m a veterinary nurse and I HATE IT when people like them continue getting animals. If you don’t have time or money to provide them with proper care, don’t get them. Same with children, only the animals usually die from the neglect with zero consequences.
I agree, the animals have no say. However one of my school mates from grade school starved his child to death,and 2 weeks prior a state worker signed him off. Some of these state workers aren't doing their jobs. Brandon Walker Peoria, Illinois(USA)

It is heartbreaking, the cycle must stop, break the chain, they need education big time, long, intensive parenting classes, general life education until the light bulb comes on with the person, eventually, given enough information and education they'll transform and if not, if they're incapable take the children out of the home and place the mother on birth control so she must stop breeding, help the children at all cost, it's possible the mother, grandmother and stepfather are beyond help and reason, sad, preventable and ridiculous, those kids pay the bill all day everyday....
I absolutely LOVE that there is an organization that works with parents to become better parents, and works with the families to change...rather than just taking the children into foster care!
Im a single mom on disability with a special needs son. Not everyone understands the struggles a d nuances like this gentleman above me commenting but as someone who was referred to a program similar to this it's been a real game changer. These programs are absolutely integral to society and more communities should offer them.
@@bambinaforever1402interventions like this absolutely help. They don’t have a 100% success rate but nothing ever will. If a program like this can keep even one family from entering the foster system it’s worth it. The best thing about something like this is anyone can do it. Anyone can be a good neighbor or friend to someone in their community. I firmly believe in giving a helping hand before calling authorities (unless the children are in danger of course). Many times families become so overwhelmed and then become “paralyzed” and just don’t know where to start because they feel like they are drowning.
It's not illegal for a 14 year old to not go to school. That blows me away. Not only is the parent never held accountable but the system set up is going to fail.
Why is that lady letting her daughter's boyfriend basically live there and destroy their lives? She needs to kick him out and if her daughter wants to chase after him LET HER.
Nothing anyone can do about it now, this seems to be recorded in 2008 just based on the alvin and the chipmunk DVD. So Sian is a grown woman now. And after fighting over it so many times and not wanting to lose your child, you just sort of.. give up
When he 7 yo smacked his little brother in the face and then scratched his head as if to say “ah you’re fine, get over it”…He’s learned this from somewhere 🤔 My heart goes out to those kids.
@@annabelenko1611yeah and that comes from the lack of being able to communicate emotions and feelings properly. That’s why a lot of non verbal kids become very violent (especially when put together with other children their age) if someone’s boundaries are crossed again and again and you aren’t heard or can’t communicate this properly the only option is violence. That’s why it is so important to talk to your child and give them the ability to communicate their will and their feelings in a proper verbal way! That’s what these kids are lacking…. And at 7 a child should be able to communicate these things without turning to violence! But I’ve got the feeling the original commenter was getting at the "hit first apologise later" attitude displayed here… the fact that the boy was violent to his brother only to turn around in a "you’re fine, get over it/it’s not that bad!" Motion shows us that this is something he must have learned from somewhere! That’s what’s so worrisome. He picked it up from somewhere most likely experience! Violence isn’t "too bad" and he will get over it. That’s just sad!
A lot of this just looks like a vicious cycle of poverty, low education, and mental health problems. The parents don't seem to be cruel or indifferent, just ignorant and ill-equipped to cope.
It really is. Certainly plenty of wealthy kids have “interesting” families too, however, the money basically gives them a “pass” and/or access to things (therapy, cleaners, etc)
I'm from eastern Kentucky and come from a long line of coal miners. My grandmother didn't have much but what she did it was clean. She would come back from the dead if I let my house get like that, lol.

But in the end letting her 14 year old daughter have all the control almost got her evicted, hated by her neighbors, and now has to watch her struggle through a teenage pregnancy. This pregnancy could have been prevented by setting of boundaries. Martin was allowed to have the run of a house that didn’t belong to him. You can make choices but you can’t control the consequences.
You know... A filthy homestead is a form of abuse if it comes to pets. Basic cleanliness is important for humans and animals. Long term underlying health issues can arrise and can be severe and permanent. Don't take it lightly. Pets have the right to a clean home and healthy living environment with the option to go outside if possible.
Wow, this program seems great. I am a social worker and have 60 clients on my own. It is IMPOSSIBLE to really achieve good results for these people who desperately need help. There is not enough money, places and workers. Sometimes I just want to lay down and cry.
Oh bless you. I would have loved to have had a social worker when I was a young teen, it would have made such a difference. Don't let it get you down. Each child you save is more than that, it's for their future generations.

Thank you for helping those children they need us don't give up on them I work with families as well but my main focus is making sure children are properly being cared for because they didn't ask for a miserable life These parents outta get off their azz and man/ woman up
Being poor means a lot of stress and therefor mental health is at risk. It can result in a complete mess because you have more or other important things to worry about..enough food, bills, clothes..
@@Alex-lr5rh I agree with that ofcourse, that’s a basic need. The reason for mentioning it, is that stress also plays a big role in this. Everybody responds different to that (body, brain e.g). As a social worker myself it is one of my priorities when I work with families to make sure the environment get’s clean and stays like that. This goes step by step or if it is really bad with immediate intervention of a specialised cleaning task force. I’ve worked in a similar situation where this was the first step..because it was not a workable situation. However, we probably miss a part of the story. It depends per case what the first step will be. Here in the Netherlands we do systemic work (working with the whole family system/network) to solve these things in a more sustainable way.
@@christinegatto7426 It's plain that the mom lost control long, long ago. It's shocking to watch as a CHILD runs everything and the family spends their time screaming at one another. This girl, Sian, is visibly depressed and in a downward spiral. She's already old before her time and unless a miracle occurs she's doomed a life of failed relationships, poverty and welfare. Nearly every time she was shown on the film she was fiddling with mascara or her hair. And what of this 'boyfriend'? He's 16? What about HIS parents? Where are they? I found it awful and depressing.
@@extremeclean2680 I too live in the US. I grew up in poverty in the south, with an alcoholic mother, so I know that dysfunction and problems exist everywhere. BUT, I was taught that parents are the ones in charge and would never DREAM of defying my mom or dad. It would have been unthinkable. This scenario--as it's shown--is, in my opinion unforgiveable. This 'mom' allowed this to happen and didn't parent when this girl was growing up and now it's too late.
My daughter's friend just decided to move into my home one day. No asking, no permission. I really felt sorry for her, for a bit. When she couldn't handle my rules and follow them, I packed her bags for her and took her to someone else's home. Nope. I always felt kinda quilty for that, for years. After watching this, no longer. Best thing I could have done.
I don't think Martin is a bad person, he's just a kid who has issues and needs of his own that's not being addressed. That said. He seems to be dragging Sian down. He has to CONSTANTLY be around, not giving her any room to breathe. Not giving her a chance to consider to improve herself. I think she would've been way into the horse visit if he wasn't right beside her sulking. He reminds me of my ex boyfriend who would sigh and huff when I would talk about college or doing anything other than being his girlfriend. I do hope they're doing well and that their baby is ok. But yeah...all I could think is "why can't she be alone for a minute?"
I don’t have children by choice. However, documentaries like this makes me want to become a foster parent. Children/teens need both love and DISCIPLINE.
The girl Sian (Shawn) and her boyfriend are just kids themselves and cannot be responsible for a child. I cannot believe they are just allowed to sleep together like that at their age. That whole situation is just sad. Lack of education, poverty, filthy living and it’s generational.
Just because it's been in your family for multiple generations, it doesn't mean that neglect is normal or okay. And those children having a pregnancy.. they are so insecure and underdeveloped. They do not need a baby they need to be separated for a while.

I actually feel for Sharon. She has mental health issues that are most likely overwhelming her. She’s struggling with the boyfriend and probably thinks she’s keeping the peace at home. Agreed, Sharn needs guidelines, but I can see why she’s not getting them. Guidelines and rules take energy that Sharon probably doesn’t have.
@@paulah7587 I agree with you. Sharon has mental health issues, and she made that known early on. I think she is overwhelmed, defeated and depressed. She probably doesn't have the insight to see the problem. People say, "You can't blame everything on this or that." "It's just lazy parenting". It just tells me they have no understanding of mental health and how it affects every facet of a person. I've seen lazy parents, she isn't one.

@@jackiemarini3203 I got more of a feeling that he wasn't comfortable w/the kids and had essentially no understanding of how to parent. It didn't sound like he or Claire had very good parent role models. He seemed more comfortable after the coaching from the worker. And the kids appeared much happier as well.
It's sad that these children are not being taught anything. There's no sign of them knowing human behaviors at their age. No one to teach them about standards, morales, how to have respect for self and others, have consideration, how to love and care for their pets. There is so much work to do as a parent and so much to teach your children. These children get nothing. This is child and animal abuse on a high level.
I genuinely can't understand what any of these breeders are saying, it's like they all have severe speech impediments or are abusing substances? Are these all children of people with cognitive issues? Not a one of them is an actual parent by any stretch of the definition. They also need to take those animals away from those nasty hoarders ASAP. And please put a leash on your pets when they're not in a fenced in area, and especially next to the road. So senseless to risk them being run over.

The little boy (Brandon) seemed so sad and withdrawn at the beginning. I'm sure he was probably shy with strangers/cameras around too but it struck me how the social worker said she'd never seen him smile before. Plus it seemed like he was expected to help get his brother up and ready when his mom was asleep. Then at the end he seems much more like a normal happy active kid. Hope they can keep the routine/structure for the kids
I just wanna say.... Bless Claire for her (emotional) involvement and level of care. Vicky, i don't think many people would have that level of patience. You can say all you want about those families. You can see they are struggling... but those socail workers dont give up.
That social worker is responsible for Sharon getting Sian home after social service had taken the child. Basically SHE is the reason for Sian to end up like that. Not something to be proud of.
I feel sorry for Shawn. Both people in her life terribly codependent. She would be better off in Foster care. Her mom needs mental health services and Martin needs a good mentor.
The worker has been going to this family for 4 years. The daughter is now pregnant at 14 and has not been to school for 1 year. I‘d say that’s a total fail and waste of tax money.
It seems to be the norm with poverty people that I have encountered in different communities I worked and lived in I am not saying EVERYONE in poverty hoards animals am speaking from my experiences only
For me, its paying for tattoos, multiple piercings & cigarettes!! That's a lot of money that could have been saved or put towards the children's needs.
This was my thought. I wholeheartedly understand it’s difficult to change, but not putting your foot down about one thing may be excusable, but her not saying "You ARE going to the doctor today, you ARE getting the IUD." Blew my mind she left it up to a child.
Usually the most incompetent people have kids. The most responsible ones are aware of the responsibilities, money, time, energy...it takes to raise a child. I'm one of them. 31 yo and without kids.

Sometimes all it takes is a little guidance and they will take it and run with it. I discovered very early on in my career that many of my clients grew up in an environment where the basic ADLs were not taught or encouraged as well as no direction or guidance. Some even had no understanding of why they should say "please" and "thank you. As a case mgr It feels like you have hit the lottery when you are able to help the person build a solid foundation and then watch them grow and thrive. And there is both a happiness and sadness when they no longer need your assistance. You miss working with them but are happy for them as well.
The grandmother was the problem. The whole "I neglected my kids and it never did them any harm" kind of attitude. The care workers managed to start breaking the cycle with the mother.
I admire the good people that help and support these troublesome families and feel sympathy, but I can't understand how it is possible to let a 14 year old take decisions as if she was an adult! And the dirt! Poverty doesn't have to mean that you have no sense of pride.
Martin seems lost also. Whenever Claire spoke to him he seemed remorseful. He said he didn’t want his child to grow up like him. This young man needed help. Obviously, the adults in his life were letting him down. Unless it’s broken, the circle of these kids becoming bad parents td will continue and that’s a shame
Sharon is depressed and bone tired but both of those conditions can be treated. There is medication for depression, and her bone-tiredness is not "sleepy tiredness" - it's boredom and laziness combined. If she actually stuck in and cleaned that house top to bottom, corner to corner, sorted and threw away junk, organized what's good to keep, and kept the kids rooms tidy and with clean beds made up every day so that they look inviting at bedtime, the whole family would feel the depression lifting. And she has no excuse not to do those things - she only works part time.
I grew up in a messed up home was a messed up little kid and I can remember all the people that tried their hardest to help me and get me to turn things around for my life. And I totally payed none of them any mind. Didn’t take no advice or none of the help they were offering and now watching these kids in the same position with the same people trying to help and they just don’t even realize and I know exactly how that feels man!!
Problems are passed on generationally just like some families pass on wealth. If your parents were raised in trouble, then they likely didn’t have the resources to be the best parent they could be so you probably didn’t get the best home life and that causes your life some troubles...then eventually you raise kids and guess what? Passing on life troubles again because you didn’t get the best start yourself. Helping people out of poverty is one step, but so is counseling and therapy for everyone. There’s a saying that goes “most people need therapy when they grow up, but instead they have children”, that wisdom applies to everyone, impoverished or not
Wealth isn't just passed on and neither are problems like this. Everyone makes life choices that determine how their life will turn out. Many people born to wealthy families are poor themselves. People born to dysfunctional families still know right from wrong. Being raised in a dysfunctional family doesn't make someone unable to make the right choices. They choose not to bc society doesn't require them too. Theres plenty of people like you that will make excuses and not hold them responsible so they keep making bad choices bc they think it's easier than behaving. You'll do the same their their children so their children will act the same way. Making excuses for people has never helped anyone have a better life. All it does is makes u feel better. You care more about your feelings than doing what will help these people change their lives. Youre not the only one. People like you feel good when you pretend these people are incapable of doing right so you can use them to feel sorry for and act as if it makes u a good person. You'll donate a bit of stuff or money to them while patting yourself on the back and their life situation doesn't change bc no one will require them to take responsibility and do better for themselves. You need people like this to exist so u can feel good about yourself. You can watch them and know no matter what bad choices u make at least you aren't them. Youll watch videos and make comments like this bc it makes u feel like you're a good person. Life situations aren't genetic. They arent passed on to the next generation like hair or eye color. Everyone has a choice in how their life will turn out. Even at that girls age she knows shes making choices that are ruining her life and she knows it's wrong. She will keep doing it bc people like u will allow her to and tell her it's not her fault. You cant "help" someone out of poverty bc much of the reason why they are there is bc of their choices. Choices have consequences. You cant ride in on a white horse and erase the consequences of their continuous bad choices for them. The government will never be able to spend enough money to get them out of poverty while they continue to make bad choices. You'd have to constantly give them money and fully support them while they keep making bad choices. Any money you give them won't better their situation bc they'll just use it to pay for their bad choices.
It's extremely sad when children are raised in filth. You don't have to have a lot of money to keep a relatively clean house and keep your children's hygiene up to an acceptable level. Some people should just not have children or pets.
There's no excuse for the filth, poverty can't always be helped but cleanliness can always be achieved. I know of people on the streets that are more hygienic and tidy

The parents are simply not able to take care of their children properly, probably due to their own mental health issues. I truly hope the intervention works for their family.
I know if they don't work or clean the house or play with the kids wtf do they do all day? My husband and I both work full time and my house doesn't get close to that dirty. I don't get it
She's not going to school, running wild and a live in boyfriend?? At 16?Her getting pregnant will be the nail in her life's coffin. She shouldn't have a phone either.
Anybody notice how Martin's home is clean? I don't know what went down with Martin but something is really wrong with him and his family life. It can't only be that his mom won't stand for his behavior. For him to act the way he does and to prefer to go to a home full of filt says something about him. Sharon and Sian are just sad. Can't say much more. They seem broken. It's really sad.
I know those boys are gonna be taken care of. She's a good mom. She just needed a little guidence. It makes me happy to see her being that playful mom to her kids. It's not often I see that around.
Kids need structure, things that are set in place consistent structure and rules. Plus play and fresh air. Parents are lazy. Kids need the parents to be present
True this was same for me. Grew up in a hoarder house and my mom had 22 indoor cats at one point. I'll tell you I never knew it was not normal until I was about 14 because I was not allowed to go other places or have people over which didn't matter because I had no friends because I stank all the time. Once I was removed I saw the difference and I almost went completely opposite. I obsessively clean now which still isn't the best mentally. Now I'm working to find a middle ground of definitely not living in filth but not crying and panicking because there is a little mess.

I am a social worker myself and yes, I understand that they feel overwhelmed but you truly need to be firmer with kids like that. If I'd speak that softly, they'd never take me seriously. I'm never rude or loud, it's not about that. But you need to show confidence in what you are saying and make them clear that there are consequences. They are just tip-toeing around all the problems.
...or spend the night! Daddy isn't around to chase the boys away with a stick and mom just wants peace & quiet. That's a recipe for early grandmotherhood.
Martin needs to be put out. Sian needs to be in school. Mum needs to be one-on-one with her daughter more often. The friends need to be in their own homes.
It almost makes me wonder if a “friend/big sister/brother” program would help, someone closer to their age but has been through it and have succeeded themselves, who insures young teens/adults like Sian follow through, but also encourages, shows her what she CAN do, not only what she SHOULD do, build trust and confidence. When the young people succeed (the ones that do), they can be the friend to the next generation. This just makes me sad.
Big Brother program isn't as great as people think! Research the the incidents involving men, that pose as concerned "Big Brothers" that have sexually assaulted the young boys that they were supposed to be mentoring. Parents shouldn't trust anyone with their children.
@@fabledfantasty7343 I appreciate your comment, and did quite a bit of research (online, not much found) and the few horrible cases they have had were children 7-12 years of age who were paired with adults. I would hope at risk teenagers being paired with other young adults like I am saying would be much safer than a child/adult pairing.

It takes a village to raise a child. But you cant expect your "village" and the support around you to be the only ones caring for your children. Your the parent at the end of the day BE A LOVING STABLE PARENT TO YOUR CHILD.
No. That's the mindset that has parents allowing their kids to do whatever they want. She should've raised that girl right from the start, not had her, or given her up for adoption. She knew she couldn't care for a child but made the choice to have one and keep it anyway. "Well at least she's at home" isn't an acceptable response to this mess.

She already knows she can't count on her mom for emotional support, it's just a convenient place to stay and get food. If she kicks her out she will find herself a homeless, maybe selling her body or on drugs and she will convince herself it's better there than at her mom['s house because now "she's free". And who knows, if she regrets it maybe she won't think her mom will take her back? Kicking her out will not be the right solution in my opinion, and it won't make her learn respect (your earn respect, people don't just respect you after having it rough for a while).
I was a child advocate. A lot of people can’t afford cleaning supplies, but simple things like sweeping the floor don’t occur to people whose parents and grandparents didn’t do that. People learn by example.
Martin and Sians parents are both weak parents. Letting 2 14 year olds to have “sleepovers” at each others house is an invitation for teen pregnancy. Who suffers? The baby
I don't understand this at all. I wasn't even allowed to talk to boys on the phone until I was 16. My dad would NEVER. If Sharon had a scary male relative at the home, Martin wouldn't be there.
I wish that when you have somebody under a certain age (say 25) that are becoming parents for the first time that some kind of parenting classes were mandatory. There are so many people out there having kids at young ages that have almost no common sense as to what it takes to raise a child....or if they do have the common sense they don't know how to put it into action or don't care to....and it's usually because they are recreating the same patterns they were raised with.
I agree with that. I was a young mother and boy oh boy changing a play doll is so much different than an infant for sure! My children are older now but I remember back in that time it would have been nice to have those basic classes even though it sounds silly.
I am an RN and worked in postpartum for close to a decade. You know what surprised me? It was the teenage boys who seemed to be the best natural fathers. I still can't believe it, but it's true.
@@Denise_Suzannethe teens and young adults I've worked with tend to be more well informed/do their research, more assertive, open to new ideas, etc on top of asking for advice. The older parents are more likely to be set in their ways and to be trusting in authority figures.
In many US States, Sharon would be charged with CDM, for allowing Martin to have continued access to her daughter, knowing that sexual activity was taking place.
Sharon has fully given up, which is so sad for Sian. She is a child, she isn't to blame for what is going on. Her mother never taught her that actions have consequences, why would she do anything different than what she is currently. She needs to be taken out of this home and placed with someone who knows what they are doing.
she was taken out of her sick mothers home because the mother was to depressed to take care of a child. But the idiot FIT worker helped the mother get Sian back after only 2 month. So this is all the social workers failing.
Birth control for the teenage girl would have been helpful. The mom needed a backbone and strict, not a pushover. The teenage girl refuses to go to school, letting her friends go wild, no structure,awful parenting, and pushover. I am with the neighbor get rid fo the friends, or call the cops, or CPS
The fact that they are both watching SpongeBob while talking about being parents and responsibility is a horrible reminder that they are both so so very young, they've been failed not only by the social worker but the parents as well. Its sad to see and there's a high chance the cycle will continue on and on..
I'm not sure why this is about poverty. There are a lot of decent poor people with morals and good families. This is more about total dysfunction. It was good to see the boys happy.
First I’ve heard about this kind of program. Applauding UK for trying to help BEFORE things become unfixable. Canada should take note and the US is failing miserably at supporting vulnerable children.

When I was a single mother struggling on welfare how I wish I had been given a social worker. Maybe things are different now, but when my son was only 6 months old I ended up in hospital weighing 83 pounds, with a massive pelvic infection. My GP told me to go on welfare and I had no idea how. She said look in the yellow pages under W. I had an abusive husband, who I had married at 18 due to being pregnant from ignorance basically. It was many years ago now, but I often think how different things would have been if someone had stepped in. My parents just continued to cut me down and the spiral continued. My son is now 40 and I am just now getting my life on track and developing self esteem. I didn't come from a 'lower class' family either, but I had zero guidance from anyone as we were kept isolated, and then the poverty kept me isolated.
Don’t judge someone without knowing the whole story. As the Bible says something like this “do not judge yet you yourself be judged.Maybe he was going thru garbage bins to see if people threw things away. This poor child is out on the street, sleeping on a park bench. I pray that God will answer his prayers and get him his very own bed and a shower. Please be kind when commenting on a post like this. I feel like Sian likely didn't get the help she needed to properly grieve after her first pregnancy ended in loss, and so she refused the birth control in the hopes that she would get pregnant to be able to have a child to heal after the one she lost. As a loss mom, I get it. As the mom of a daughter, I'm very sad for her that she let her life go that way.

The cats were peeing everywhere because the litter box only got changed ONCE a week with FIVE cats. I have one cat and change it every day. I can only imagine the overwhelming smell of urine in there

It also appalls me how no one in that house knows the first thing about cat care. They’re going to limit their peeing to the first floor and not to the kids’ new rooms? Why are any of the cats peeing on ANY floors? 1) They still aren’t spayed or neutered despite being full grown or 2) they have ONE tiny litter box that they now change once per week with all those cats! I have 3 male cats, of course no peeing, and 4 giant litter boxes that are changed daily. It’ll always stink of pee in that house until someone teaches these families about the low-cost spay/neuter clinics. It’s one more box than the number of cats you have, changed daily.
I’m a veterinary nurse and I HATE IT when people like them continue getting animals. If you don’t have time or money to provide them with proper care, don’t get them. Same with children, only the animals usually die from the neglect with zero consequences.
Absolutely hear you on this one! They should be stopped if they can't take care of them. Trauma is no excuse for intentional cruelty and neglect.

It is heartbreaking, the cycle must stop, break the chain, they need education big time, long, intensive parenting classes, general life education until the light bulb comes on with the person, eventually, given enough information and education they'll transform and if not, if they're incapable take the children out of the home and place the mother on birth control so she must stop breeding, help the children at all cost, it's possible the mother, grandmother and stepfather are beyond help and reason, sad, preventable and ridiculous, those kids pay the bill all day everyday....

I absolutely LOVE that there is an organization that works with parents to become better parents, and works with the families to change...rather than just taking the children into foster care!
Im a single mom on disability with a special needs son. Not everyone understands the struggles a d nuances like this gentleman above me commenting but as someone who was referred to a program similar to this it's been a real game changer. These programs are absolutely integral to society and more communities should offer them.
They should work on getting the entire bunch sterilized before they do anything else.

If a program like this can keep even one family from entering the foster system it’s worth it. The best thing about something like this is anyone can do it. Anyone can be a good neighbor or friend to someone in their community. I firmly believe in giving a helping hand before calling authorities (unless the children are in danger of course). Many times families become so overwhelmed and then become “paralyzed” and just don’t know where to start because they feel like they are drowning.

That’s why a lot of non verbal kids become very violent (especially when put together with other children their age) if someone’s boundaries are crossed again and again and you aren’t heard or can’t communicate this properly the only option is violence. That’s why it is so important to talk to your child and give them the ability to communicate their will and their feelings in a proper verbal way! That’s what these kids are lacking…. And at 7 a child should be able to communicate these things without turning to violence!
But I’ve got the feeling the original commenter was getting at the "hit first apologise later" attitude displayed here… the fact that the boy was violent to his brother only to turn around in a "you’re fine, get over it/it’s not that bad!" Motion shows us that this is something he must have learned from somewhere! That’s what’s so worrisome. He picked it up from somewhere most likely experience! Violence isn’t "too bad" and he will get over it. That’s just sad!

This pregnancy could have been prevented by setting of boundaries. Martin was allowed to have the run of a house that didn’t belong to him. You can make choices but you can’t control the consequences.

Wow, this program seems great. I am a social worker and have 60 clients on my own. It is IMPOSSIBLE to really achieve good results for these people who desperately need help. There is not enough money, places and workers. Sometimes I just want to lay down and cry.

@@Alex-lr5rh I agree with that ofcourse, that’s a basic need. The reason for mentioning it, is that stress also plays a big role in this. Everybody responds different to that (body, brain e.g). As a social worker myself it is one of my priorities when I work with families to make sure the environment get’s clean and stays like that. This goes step by step or if it is really bad with immediate intervention of a specialised cleaning task force. I’ve worked in a similar situation where this was the first step..because it was not a workable situation. However, we probably miss a part of the story. It depends per case what the first step will be. Here in the Netherlands we do systemic work (working with the whole family system/network) to solve these things in a more sustainable way.

@@extremeclean2680 I too live in the US. I grew up in poverty in the south, with an alcoholic mother, so I know that dysfunction and problems exist everywhere. BUT, I was taught that parents are the ones in charge and would never DREAM of defying my mom or dad. It would have been unthinkable. This scenario--as it's shown--is, in my opinion unforgiveable. This 'mom' allowed this to happen and didn't parent when this girl was growing up and now it's too late.
My daughter's friend just decided to move into my home one day. No asking, no permission. I really felt sorry for her, for a bit. When she couldn't handle my rules and follow them, I packed her bags for her and took her to someone else's home. Nope. I always felt kinda quilty for that, for years. After watching this, no longer. Best thing I could have done.
I don't think Martin is a bad person, he's just a kid who has issues and needs of his own that's not being addressed. That said. He seems to be dragging Sian down. He has to CONSTANTLY be around, not giving her any room to breathe. Not giving her a chance to consider to improve herself. I think she would've been way into the horse visit if he wasn't right beside her sulking. He reminds me of my ex boyfriend who would sigh and huff when I would talk about college or doing anything other than being his girlfriend. I do hope they're doing well and that their baby is ok. But yeah...all I could think is "why can't she be alone for a minute?"

The girl Sian (Shawn) and her boyfriend are just kids themselves and cannot be responsible for a child. I cannot believe they are just allowed to sleep together like that at their age. That whole situation is just sad. Lack of education, poverty, filthy living and it’s generational.
Just because it's been in your family for multiple generations, it doesn't mean that neglect is normal or okay. And those children having a pregnancy.. they are so insecure and underdeveloped. They do not need a baby they need to be separated for a while.

She probably doesn't have the insight to see the problem. People say, "You can't blame everything on this or that." "It's just lazy parenting". It didn't sound like he or Claire had very good parent role models. He seemed more comfortable after the coaching from the worker. And the kids appeared much happier as well.

It's sad that these children are not being taught anything. There's no sign of them knowing human behaviors at their age. No one to teach them about standards, morales, how to have respect for self and others, have consideration, how to love and care for their pets. There is so much work to do as a parent and so much to teach your children. These children get nothing. This is child and animal abuse on a high level.
I genuinely can't understand what any of these breeders are saying, it's like they all have severe speech impediments or are abusing substances? Are these all children of people with cognitive issues? Not a one of them is an actual parent by any stretch of the definition. They also need to take those animals away from those nasty hoarders ASAP. And please put a leash on your pets when they're not in a fenced in area, and especially next to the road. So senseless to risk them being run over.

The little boy (Brandon) seemed so sad and withdrawn at the beginning. I'm sure he was probably shy with strangers/cameras around too but it struck me how the social worker said she'd never seen him smile before. Plus it seemed like he was expected to help get his brother up and ready when his mom was asleep. Then at the end he seems much more like a normal happy active kid. Hope they can keep the routine/structure for the kids

Sometimes all it takes is a little guidance and they will take it and run with it. I discovered very early on in my career that many of my clients grew up in an environment where the basic ADLs were not taught or encouraged as well as no direction or guidance. Some even had no understanding of why they should say "please" and "thank you. As a case mgr It feels like you have hit the lottery when you are able to help the person build a solid foundation and then watch them grow and thrive. And there is both a happiness and sadness when they no longer need your assistance. You miss working with them but are happy for them as well.
The grandmother was the problem. The whole "I neglected my kids and it never did them any harm" kind of attitude. The care workers managed to start breaking the cycle with the mother.
I admire the good people that help and support these troublesome families and feel sympathy, but I can't understand how it is possible to let a 14 year old take decisions as if she was an adult! And the dirt! Poverty doesn't have to mean that you have no sense of pride.

Martin seems lost also. Whenever Claire spoke to him he seemed remorseful. He said he didn’t want his child to grow up like him. This young man needed help. Obviously, the adults in his life were letting him down. Unless it’s broken, the circle of these kids becoming bad parents td will continue and that’s a shame

Sharon is depressed and bone tired but both of those conditions can be treated. There is medication for depression, and her bone-tiredness is not "sleepy tiredness" - it's boredom and laziness combined. If she actually stuck in and cleaned that house top to bottom, corner to corner, sorted and threw away junk, organized what's good to keep, and kept the kids rooms tidy and with clean beds made up every day so that they look inviting at bedtime, the whole family would feel the depression lifting. And she has no excuse not to do those things - she only works part time.
I grew up in a messed up home was a messed up little kid and I can remember all the people that tried their hardest to help me and get me to turn things around for my life. And I totally payed none of them any mind. Didn’t take no advice or none of the help they were offering and now watching these kids in the same position with the same people trying to help and they just don’t even realize and I know exactly how that feels man!!

If your parents were raised in trouble, then they likely didn’t have the resources to be the best parent they could be so you probably didn’t get the best home life and that causes your life some troubles...then eventually you raise kids and guess what? Passing on life troubles again because you didn’t get the best start yourself. Helping people out of poverty is one step, but so is counseling and therapy for everyone. There’s a saying that goes “most people need therapy when they grow up, but instead they have children”, that wisdom applies to everyone, impoverished or not
Wealth isn't just passed on and neither are problems like this. Everyone makes life choices that determine how their life will turn out. Many people born to wealthy families are poor themselves. People born to dysfunctional families still know right from wrong. Being raised in a dysfunctional family doesn't make someone unable to make the right choices. They choose not to bc society doesn't require them too. Theres plenty of people like you that will make excuses and not hold them responsible so they keep making bad choices bc they think it's easier than behaving. You'll do the same their their children so their children will act the same way. Making excuses for people has never helped anyone have a better life. All it does is makes u feel better. You care more about your feelings than doing what will help these people change their lives. Youre not the only one. People like you feel good when you pretend these people are incapable of doing right so you can use them to feel sorry for and act as if it makes u a good person. You'll donate a bit of stuff or money to them while patting yourself on the back and their life situation doesn't change bc no one will require them to take responsibility and do better for themselves. You need people like this to exist so u can feel good about yourself. You can watch them and know no matter what bad choices u make at least you aren't them. Youll watch videos and make comments like this bc it makes u feel like you're a good person. Life situations aren't genetic. They arent passed on to the next generation like hair or eye color. Everyone has a choice in how their life will turn out. Even at that girls age she knows shes making choices that are ruining her life and she knows it's wrong. She will keep doing it bc people like u will allow her to and tell her it's not her fault. You cant "help" someone out of poverty bc much of the reason why they are there is bc of their choices. Choices have consequences. You cant ride in on a white horse and erase the consequences of their continuous bad choices for them. The government will never be able to spend enough money to get them out of poverty while they continue to make bad choices. You'd have to constantly give them money and fully support them while they keep making bad choices. Any money you give them won't better their situation bc they'll just use it to pay for their bad choices.
It's extremely sad when children are raised in filth. You don't have to have a lot of money to keep a relatively clean house and keep your children's hygiene up to an acceptable level. Some people should just not have children or pets.
There's no excuse for the filth, poverty can't always be helped but cleanliness can always be achieved. I know of people on the streets that are more hygienic and tidy

The parents are simply not able to take care of their children properly, probably due to their own mental health issues. I truly hope the intervention works for their family.

I don't know what went down with Martin but something is really wrong with him and his family life. It can't only be that his mom won't stand for his behavior. For him to act the way he does and to prefer to go to a home full of filt says something about him. Sharon and Sian are just sad. Can't say much more. They seem broken. It's really sad.
I know those boys are gonna be taken care of. She's a good mom. She just needed a little guidence. It makes me happy to see her being that playful mom to her kids. It's not often I see that around.
Kids need structure, things that are set in place consistent structure and rules. Plus play and fresh air. Parents are lazy. Kids need the parents to be present
The tragedy is that not all parents know how to be parents. The stepfather said his father was an alcoholic and in and out of jail.
Sometimes unfortunately, you're a product of your environment, when given the right attention, and/or counseling, you can thrive.
True this was same for me. Grew up in a hoarder house and my mom had 22 indoor cats at one point. I'll tell you I never knew it was not normal until I was about 14 because I was not allowed to go other places or have people over which didn't matter because I had no friends because I stank all the time. Once I was removed I saw the difference and I almost went completely opposite. I obsessively clean now which still isn't the best mentally. Now I'm working to find a middle ground of definitely not living in filth but not crying and panicking because there is a little mess.

I am a social worker myself and yes, I understand that they feel overwhelmed but you truly need to be firmer with kids like that. If I'd speak that softly, they'd never take me seriously. I'm never rude or loud, it's not about that. But you need to show confidence in what you are saying and make them clear that there are consequences. They are just tip-toeing around all the problems.
My heart grieves for children who are neglected. God love their little souls.

It almost makes me wonder if a “friend/big sister/brother” program would help, someone closer to their age but has been through it and have succeeded themselves, who insures young teens/adults like Sian follow through, but also encourages, shows her what she CAN do, not only what she SHOULD do, build trust and confidence. When the young people succeed (the ones that do), they can be the friend to the next generation. This just makes me sad.

Research the the incidents involving men, that pose as concerned "Big Brothers" that have sexually assaulted the young boys that they were supposed to be mentoring. Parents shouldn't trust anyone with their children.

I would hope at risk teenagers being paired with other young adults like I am saying would be much safer than a child/adult pairing.

I was a child advocate. A lot of people can’t afford cleaning supplies, but simple things like sweeping the floor don’t occur to people whose parents and grandparents didn’t do that. People learn by example.

I wish that when you have somebody under a certain age (say 25) that are becoming parents for the first time that some kind of parenting classes were mandatory. There are so many people out there having kids at young ages that have almost no common sense as to what it takes to raise a child....or if they do have the common sense they don't know how to put it into action or don't care to....and it's usually because they are recreating the same patterns they were raised with.
I agree with that. I was a young mother and boy oh boy changing a play doll is so much different than an infant for sure! My children are older now but I remember back in that time it would have been nice to have those basic classes even though it sounds silly.

I am an RN and worked in postpartum for close to a decade. You know what surprised me? It was the teenage boys who seemed to be the best natural fathers. I still can't believe it, but it's true.
@@Denise_Suzannethe teens and young adults I've worked with tend to be more well informed/do their research, more assertive, open to new ideas, etc on top of asking for advice. The older parents are more likely to be set in their ways and to be trusting in authority figures.

Sharon has fully given up, which is so sad for Sian. She is a child, she isn't to blame for what is going on. Her mother never taught her that actions have consequences, why would she do anything different than what she is currently. She needs to be taken out of this home and placed with someone who knows what they are doing.
she was taken out of her sick mothers home because the mother was to depressed to take care of a child. But the idiot FIT worker helped the mother get Sian back after only 2 month. So this is all the social workers failing.

The fact that they are both watching SpongeBob while talking about being parents and responsibility is a horrible reminder that they are both so so very young, they've been failed not only by the social worker but the parents as well. When I was a single mother struggling on welfare how I wish I had been given a social worker. Maybe things are different now, but when my son was only 6 months old I ended up in hospital weighing 83 pounds, with a massive pelvic infection. My GP told me to go on welfare and I had no idea how. She said look in the yellow pages under W. I had an abusive husband, who I had married at 18 due to being pregnant from ignorance basically. It was many years ago now, but I often think how different things would have been if someone had stepped in. My parents just continued to cut me down and the spiral continued. My son is now 40 and I am just now getting my life on track and developing self esteem. I didn't come from a 'lower class' family either, but I had zero guidance from anyone as we were kept isolated, and then the poverty kept me isolated.
Raising children in filth they should be ashamed of themselves. Disgusting. Just because they don't know any different doesn't mean it isn't neglect.

I feel like Sian likely didn't get the help she needed to properly grieve after her first pregnancy ended in loss, and so she refused the birth control in the hopes that she would get pregnant to be able to have a child to heal after the one she lost. As a loss mom, I get it. As the mom of a daughter, I'm very sad for her that she let her life go that way.

The cats were peeing everywhere because the litter box only got changed ONCE a week with FIVE cats. I have one cat and change it every day. I can only imagine the overwhelming smell of urine in there
i had three Cats. Kept them fed and clean. Nothing makes a frigging Cat happier than to plunk itself right in the litterbox YOU JUST CLEANED. 😄
This should be here in America. We have social services but overwhelmed with cases. Quadruple the families probably more than that.

It also appalls me how no one in that house knows the first thing about cat care. They’re going to limit their peeing to the first floor and not to the kids’ new rooms? Why are any of the cats peeing on ANY floors? 1) They still aren’t spayed or neutered despite being full grown or 2) they have ONE tiny litter box that they now change once per week with all those cats! I have 3 male cats, of course no peeing, and 4 giant litter boxes that are changed daily. It’ll always stink of pee in that house until someone teaches these families about the low-cost spay/neuter clinics. It’s one more box than the number of cats you have, changed daily.
