The struggle was real back then, Ru mentions it constantly. He was couch surfing, many of his friends were taken by the AIDS crisis, battling addiction and encountering pervasive homophobia. Today he's a superstar but here he was just another struggling artist with hopes and dreams.

This video feels so dreamy, yet a bit melancholic. These folks are putting themselves out there in ways no one ever dared to before, clearly at the risk of their safety and person hood. They're experiencing liberation _so concentrated_ that its literally impossible to replicate nowadays due to us (lgbtq+ folks that is) having far more privilege, acceptance, and power in our identities than they could have ever dreamed of in the time this was filmed. True icons, these folks.

Most people have always accepted the gay community. The problem in 2022 is that "privilege" word you used, whereby it's gone far-overboard as a political tool; it may end up...as it has begun to...creating the opposite effect.

THAT'S CRAZY. I was literally alive at the same time as her and i didnt even know. Like i see all this cool vintage stuff or i hear about historical events and for some reason my mind doesn't register that those were real times, real things that actually happend, real people that lived and died. Idk why it just blows my mind

ACT UP, Harvey Milk (whom we can thank for commissioning/inspiring Baker to create a 'banner' 🏳️‍🌈), the bathouse raids in Canada, or even films (I swear to you there were 50+ queens who couldn't name the stars in RHPS "Vinent Price" SMH)
As SOON as I realized I was queer, I hit ever book, documentary, film ect I could get my hands on. I *wanted* to know as much about my family as possible.

He and Lady Bunny used to live together in abandoned apartments in New York when they were poor and young and while both doing nightly shows at gay clubs back in the days when these shows were not popular like today and hardly payed any money. He became so famous doing them that he met some music producers who created his first hit single Supermodel..which became a number one hit worldwide. After doing music for many years..he created his production company WoW (World of Wonder) and then created his show RuPaul's Drag Race and other shows..which made him the multi-millionaire he is today. Hard work and perseverance is why he is the most famous drag queen artist today. Nobody gave him anything. He worked for it and created something out of nothing. The end.

Antonio Caban I read that Nelson Sullivan, the fellow who made these videos, died fairly young and quite unexpectedly (Heart attack, if I recall.) which makes me wonder: Did he have a will, or at least directives, in place as to who inherited these videos? They obviously ended up in the hands of someone he could trust to know what best to do with them? Were these videos part of one of Nelson's larger community art projects or were they just a personal record?

Just think of how the coming years changed for him..... he achieved international fame as a drag queen with the release of his debut single, "Supermodel (You Better Work)", which was included on his debut studio album Supermodel of the World in 1993. In 1994, he became a spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics, raising money for the Mac AIDS Fund and becoming the first drag queen to land a major cosmetics campaign. Also that year, he received his own talk show on VH1, The RuPaul Show, which he hosted for over 100 episodes, while co-hosting the morning radio show on WKTU with Michelle Visage. Yes. This video isn't what I expected. You can see by Ru's face that he was uncomfortable. This is obviously before Mama Ru developed the thick skin she's known for today.

I mean, the idea of it has been around for a very long time. The fact that it has only been so prevalent in the past 5 years or so is kind of strange.

ADT2695 I know right it wasn’t called “trending” back then it’s just like recording moments or video logs recorded in tapes but now because of the presence of social media it’s become different

Sometimes, people would submit films like this to public access so other people in the local general public could see it. But yeah, it was more like a video journal, and a lot of people did it

Also , the other queen says (not Ru) at one point, about a song, when somenone asks who it is, she says, "a computer", so she called AI reality on that. A lot of ppl saw some inclinations of what was to come. There were a lot of subculture references to what is reality now.

Katya Zamolodchikova except that no one can look at you since you're using Katya's name and likeness as your own.
I get that you're a fan and doing it out of admiration - but posting comments like this is suggesting that you truly are Katy's - which isn't really cool.
