Rare did a really good job with all the hub worlds of their platformers in this era. BK and BT had very different hubs that both did things similar to DK Isle
I just LOVE DK Isle. This was pretty much my very first 3D videogame, so getting to explore DK Isle so freely and moving in 3D was so MINDBLOWING. Add the cartoony charm of Rare into the mix and you get perfection.

DK Isles was always a great hub world to me as a kid. Little kid me always wondered what kind of hidden goodies were lying about. I always wondered what certain things did when I still didn't have the moves or clearance for it. Though it is to say I never got the impression that DK Isles was ever any kind of "internal plexus" like Peach's Castle. I guess that's more because it's a much more organized hub world, you know you can't access a new level until you give K. Lumsy a boss key. I never thought there'd be super secret levels within levels, but little kid me still had dreams about them.
I always liked the build up to dropping off another boss key and seeing what part of DK Isle is going to reveal a new world! It's such a cool thing to experience for the first time!
1:02 people can say whatever they want about that lag...but having THAT view is pure awesomeness! Just an opinion: The hubworlds from the RARE games (more directly speaking aboout DK64, BK, BT and Diddy Kong Racing) are all excellent and the best in their themes (BK being Gruntilda-based, DK64 as you said showing how peaceful it was before K.Rool, BT being broader, and Diddy Koing Racing being ample for navigation) Excellent video buddy!
Yeah, Rare was in a master class when it came to sound design. They knew how to do some pretty dynamic things with music and it always added to the perfect atmosphere in their games!
🐵The End Credits sequence where all the Kongs are shown playing and loafing around the DK Isles is full of environmental appreciation 🐊 and don't forget the friendly swim they take with K. Lumsy either, wonderfully jovial scenery!🤩
Oh good, I was wondering if you'd address the hub/lobbies. I like that each lobby has its own musical aesthetic take on the DK Isle theme, and I ADORE Banana Fairy Island's music. I can fall asleep to that one. When I was a kid, I wanted the jetpack specifically to see what was on top of DK Isle and K Rool's island. Just clearing the little obstacles as time goes on with your expanded move set is SO satisfying.
I can't get over how solid the lobby music is! Amazing details. It was always so cool to gain more abilities and collect more golden bananas here and there throughout the hub
Definitely one of the better hub worlds I've seen. The only thing I feel is missing from it is more fun unlockable elements. I feel like at some point, we should have been able to unlock Rambi and Engaurde on DK Island. Even if there is no golden banana associated with them, just the ability to run/swim around as these characters for fun. Also the Coconut motor boat should have been a thing on the Isles. It's such a fun vehicle and we barely get to use it. Like maybe have a Funky Kong building somewhere in DK island that unlocks it, and you can summon it with special barrels/crates at certain docks scattered around. My hope is someone one day mods this in. And also adds it to the randomizer.
Good video! Honestly, Rare knew how to make great hub worlds on the N64. They were big enough to explore and had lots of little secrets to uncover. Grunty's Lair, DK Isle, and the Isle O' Hags were all excellent! I did like DK Isle as it slowly unravels itself as you unlock everything. I never found it confusing as it kind of guided you along with the numbered Bananaport Pads. When I first played Donkey Kong 64 as a kid, I remember running around DK Isle wondering how to get into some of the areas. As much as I like DK Isle, I hope if they do a new Donkey Kong 3D platformer that they don't just use DK Isle again, but have the Kongs go to a brand new world/island.
Hub worlds are always unique to have in gaming and DK 64 has a pretty fun one. Nicely detailed with many areas, not too big or small, and a lot of things and places to explore.
I sort of wish there was more on the inside of DK island, like houses for the other Kongs, or even Rambi, Enguarde and Squawks chilling. Otherwise a fantastic hub world!
One of the things I give DK64 massive credit for is the DK Isles really standing on their own. Like, there's not too many obvious "hey player needs to pass the time" enemies like God of War's Norse hub worlds, the bonus games aren't really too problematic in the world itself, and setting the mood for problems to be solved mutually between the worlds and the lobbies is truly great interplay. Except for what I suspect was an unintentionally triggered glitch moment for a rental copy (I haven't seen 1 hit ko sharks in any videos I've seen and there were like 4 below k rool and amongst Gloomy Galleon), nothing is really forcing a gameplay loop or an overall sense of caution besides the ship...and even that has intimidation without feelling like forced action. Even as someone who basically returned the rental after Angry Aztec (strangely, the bonus games and the stealth game instead of the race) and felt like I couldn't get anywhere in the world that somehow was gotten post Frantic Factory, I could appreciate the hub world for being what it was.
I saw the post and looked at the clock. Went live 5 mintues ago. Love this hub world. It's the prefect size for the content in it. Majora's Mask is also perfect size for the amount of things you can do. Hyrule Field in OoT is pretty barren though.
I kinda like how every golden banana is sort of balanced in the hub world. I'm not referring to difficulty when I say that as some people might struggle with some of the minigame barrel ones but despite a bit of set up for some of them, every kong has a similar golden banana that they have to collect here. 5 bananas are earned from Blueprints (shocker) 5 bananas are given to you just by playing an instrument on a music pad 5 bananas require you to hit a weapon switch 5 bananas require one of Cranky's ability barrels and 4 bananas are recieved by completing a bonus barrel (Technically 5 but Diddy's one on top of the island is being counted as a cranky barrel one) This is because DK doesn't get a bonus barrel as his golden banana is gotten just by talking to K. Lumsy at the beginning of the game.
One of the Isles bananas I always had trouble with was the Gloomy Galleon lobby and Aztec lobby ones. The Pony Tail Twirl can be really hard to control some times!
Dude you've been COOKING lately, please keep posting these vids! I actually have an idea you could use for a bunch of videos and that is analyzing inside of places like the cabins in crystal caves or the water mill in fungi forest, I really appreciate the ambience these places offer, would be cool to see a video discussing them.

This is how you do a hub world RIGHT. No offense to other hub worlds out there. There’s still really good ones like Peach’s castle, and Delfino plaza, respectively. It’s just fun to soak up the atmosphere. One of the best hub worlds IMO. And I know you agreed too.
absolutely this! And it's funny you mention Peach's Castle and Delfino Plazo, because I also think those are AWESOME hub worlds. But man, DK Isle really takes the cake. There's so much to do, it really is a world of its own.
Do you think if they make a second donkey Kong 64 they will give DK a flood water jet pack and have him fight Petey piranha with his big ass leaf arms n shit
Hub worlds are fun at first, but every game should have a feature whereby once you beat the final boss once, you can simply go into the menu and select which level you want to go to.
Only thing this world could use like all the others - more enemies, strong enemies, and more stuff underwater. But the limitations of the N64 probably prevented that.
As a kid who didn't yet understand how to get Tiny, the Banana Fairy island was so sad to the point of being scary. I didn't understand who this other head was or why the music was so sad, so I pondered all these awful tragedies and scared myself.
To be honest, there's not a lot I would change for DK isles. Things are more accessible as you advance through the game and there's just enough secrets that you got something to do in between levels.

@superjoebros64 you're meant to shoot it with each kong. It starts out red looking like every other mushroom but changes colour once shot by Diddy and then you just shoot it with each kong that matches the colour. The really annoying part is that there's also a switch in the room that pulls your homing ammo away.
Am I gonna know why it was a good decision to use banjo Kazooie’s music from his beta to put in DK 64 but the music feels really sad. It doesn’t feel beachy enough for me. Maybe it’s probably just me. I mean there was a song that was used in manager Kazooie for treasure Cove that was never used that had similar feelings.😢😢😢
Hearing that dk isle music is the most calming thing in this world lol I wish i could visit that place, just perfect imo. Sometimes i just roam around, even tho i know every nook and cranny Maybe the heaviest hXc band 😅 Tyler is an absolute ANIMAL behind the mic ua-cam.com/video/rkFVWoCqbkQ/v-deo.htmlsi=BVsyZRqv3gIAxeUt
This is peak gaming and yet if we meme hard enough band make enough Chunky Lanky and Tiny parodies for smash maybe just maybe Nintendo might decide to bring this to switch 😂
I'm trying to think of what other colors could be added! Obviously we already have blue from the water, and some green/ brown from trees. Of course, the whole idea is that it's shaped like DK's head!
There's something fun about Collectathon Games, I find them more fun than typical modern games, because they provide a challenge for collecting a bunch of stuff for different things. Its why I like games like Donkey Kong and Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, or even Spyro the Dragon, each offer their own set of fun challenges and rewards for them.I just kind of wish there were more games like them, even some modern games like Super Mario Odyssey fills that Collectathon adventure type fun, you collect certain amount of things, and it allows you to move on to the next area.
Cheers to one of the best hub worlds! Any other games come to mind with a great world hub?
Really Peach’s castle. For the reason that it has a ton of secrets to unravel.
Super Mario 64 with Peach's castle is another great one. My sister and I used to spend hours in there goofing around and having fun.

They crushed it with their designs!
I don't think 100% of the music is unused Banjo music. There's a lot of original score designed for this game
Nothing to collect at the start of the game? There is at least 2 DK mounds!
And camera rolls!
Possible Hot take: I think DK Isle counts as a world more than Hideout Helm does
Dang, I guess so! There's more to do I guess!
Were you hinting at a potential mario sunshine review ? If so that’s a 👍🏼 from me
I loooove Sunshine! Definitely want to make videos! 😁
@awesome !! I have fun memories of sunshine and its always interesting seeing others take on what’s the most polarizing mario game lol
I FUCKING LOVE YOU AND YOUR VIDEOS
THANK YOU! Glad you're enjoying them 😁
Hearing that dk isle music is the most calming thing in this world lol
I wish i could visit that place, just perfect imo. Sometimes i just roam around, even tho i know every nook and cranny

It's so chill 😌 love going for a walk around this hub
Dang this goes pretty hard
Krokodile isle ❌
Krokod isle ✅
OH MY GOD LOL that's good
This is peak gaming and yet if we meme hard enough band make enough Chunky Lanky and Tiny parodies for smash maybe just maybe Nintendo might decide to bring this to switch 😂
Whatever it takes!
the outside of the island look a bit bland to me and the scale is too wonky for my linking.
other than that it like it ig.
I'm trying to think of what other colors could be added! Obviously we already have blue from the water, and some green/ brown from trees. Of course, the whole idea is that it's shaped like DK's head!
Nicee!
🍌🐒
idk why but tiny getting the 201st banana is weird because i hate her why didnt thy just put dixie in
I KNOW ME TOO! GOD THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD PETEY PIRANHA ONSTEAD OF HER. With his BIG ASS LEAF ARMS N SHIT
I feel this! Yooka Laylee is up there in my book!
