  • Join us for a special episode of Academy of Tone as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the iconic Fender Stratocaster! This week, Thomas Blug, a lifelong Strat enthusiast, will delve into the rich history and enduring legacy of this legendary guitar.
Introduced in 1954, the Stratocaster has become an iconic instrument, renowned for its versatile sound, sleek design, and comfortable playability. Its popularity spans decades and genres, making it a favorite among musicians worldwide and contributing to its status as the best-selling electric guitar model.
Thomas has a unique and passionate relationship with Stratocasters. His journey began with his first electric guitar, a Strat, followed by various Fender and Squier models in the 80s. At 17, he sold all of his guitars to purchase a real vintage 1961 Fender Stratocaster, which remains his main guitar to this day.
Over the years, Thomas has had the privilege of playing some of the greatest Stratocasters in existence, thanks to friends, collectors, and his presentations on the UA-cam channel "The World of Vintage Guitars."
Awarded the title of "Strat King of Europe" in 2004, Thomas's deep knowledge and love for these beautiful guitars make him the perfect host for this celebration.
    In This Episode:
    • Design and Technical Aspects: Thomas will discuss the beauty and genius of Leo Fender’s design, including the contour body, synchronized vibrato, and three pickups. He’ll explore the variations and evolutions of the Stratocaster since its debut in 1954.
    • Success of the Stratocaster: Discover why this design has stood the test of time and why it was considered ahead of its era.
    • Iconic Players: The Stratocaster has been favored by legends such as Hank Marvin, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Mark Knopfler. Thomas will highlight how these players contributed to the Strat's fame.
    • Classic Strat Tones: Thomas will demonstrate some legendary Strat tones using his BluGuitar AMP1, featuring sounds inspired by The Shadows, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen, Mark Knopfler and Nile Rogers...
    • Modern Variations: Learn about the evolution from authentic vintage guitars to replicas, as well as variations like the super Strat, used by players like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Paul Gilbert.
    • Future of the Stratocaster: The legacy continues with contemporary artists such as John Mayer, RHCP's John Frusciante, Nile Rodgers, Cory Wong, Mateus Asato, Matteo Mancuso, and Tim Henson.

I hope you have enjoyed this episode about probably the most iconic and my favorite guitar : the Stratocaster 😊
I have a deep connection with that instrument as you could see me with my STRATs in life… My personal No.1 remains my 61 Strat that I play since I bought it when I was 17. I’m sure I will also choose this as my main guitar in the future as it became a part of me…
Leo Fender‘s creations are big influence on how I approach design in general: make something great based on we’ll thought through (mechanical and electrical) elements that have been tested and fine tuned to perfection. The Strat is a good example for a design that has such qualities and has survived now 7 decades : that’s what I would like to achieve with my designs as well…
Probably I’m not as good as Leo, but let’s see - in 60 years…😂😂😂
    Cheers, Thomas

Awesome playing! Now I am so glad that another person is aware of "That" Fender smell!! I got a brand new Stratocaster in the 90s, when I opened the case, that was the 'Smell".

Less Bass for Neck Pickup. More close or more far away from the Strings?

Less bass: more distance from pickups to Strings…
