Which type of ROTC are you in? I ask because I’m a retired Army Major mustang of 35 years combined service. I was once assigned to Army ROTC at Long Beach State University as a CPT. Best duty I ever had. (By “Mustang” I mean that I was once an enlisted guy, and by “combined service” I mean that I started out as an enlisted Marine fresh out of high school, when the war in ‘Nam, was at it’s peak in 1967). Naturally, being Marines all 70 of us in my Boot Camp Platoon, plus virtually every one in every Boot Camp platoon that year, the year before, and for two years after we graduated from Boot Camp, both on the east coast, and the on the west coast (mine) went straight away to ‘Nam. When released from active duty I was a CPL E-4, and soon joined the Army at the same rank, made SGT in a year, and SSG three years later. Meanwhile, I had been acquiring college units. Upon completion of college, I was at the right place at the right time, and was awarded a direct commission as a 2LT. Let me tell you, nobody values being an officer more than a Mustang! We live, eat, sleep, and eat our commission, and nothing in this world would make us give it up! Anyway, the reason I dropped in on you is because I happened to notice that you used the word “dope” in your comment. It’s none of my business of course, and I have no idea how serious you are about being a respected officer, but I thought that I might want to give you a “heads up”, and say that you might want to lose that “dope”, upon becoming an officer, because it won’t fly, with your superiors or juniors any more than tatoos, or smoking will fly, because as you have probably been told, as a officer, you will be held to a higher standard by your superiors, AND your juniors. In the case of your superiors, this will be reflected on your yearly OER (Officers Evaluation Report), which will make or break your career, and in the case of your juniors (the enlisted), it will be reflected in the degree of respect they feel, and display toward you. You must always maintain that divide between you in speech, manner, and actions, if you are to maintain the “discipline and good order of the service”. I could tell you stories. . .
