    The thing that holds me back from trying out a hurdy gurdy is not the difficulty, not the price (okay maybe) but the fact that you need an enginering degree to tune and adjust it and stuff xD

      For me it's Definitely the price 🤣

      I would love to play one but yeah the price and I can't play an instrument due to my brain not working to good.

      Just play it out of tune and add some pedal effects.

    Thanks for the information about that elegant instrument.
    I'm a Turk, we have some set of authentic bowed instruments like Yayli Tanbur, Klasik kemence, Rebap, Iklık, kemane vs. Some of them originates from central asia and some of them created in Anatolia, mostly in a simplistic way. But that instrument, hurdy gurdy. Is it so sweet, technical and practical :) And has nice drone tones.

    That is an instrument I find very interesting and appealing. I am writing High Fantasy, and have a character, a wandering princess who plays music. Originally I had her play a magical violin, then added a magical electric guitar and had her use one or the other depending on her preference. Now that I know about the hurdy gurdy, I think I am going to replace the princess' violin and electric guitar for a hurdy gurdy, it looks more exotic, more magical, and also very complex in its construction, as something only nobles and royalty would be able to afford in a fantasy world. Where can I learn more in depth about it? Any place where I can chat with musicians willing to aid a fantasy writer? Any features or add-ons that would be more likely seen in a hurdy gurdy designed for a solo musician? Thanks :)

    What about the 'sound box'? (sorry I know nothing about musical instrument terminology) The violin and the acoustic guitar have distinctive body shapes and 'sound holes' that contribute to their overall sound. What governs the shape of the Hurdy Gurdy? And does it even have any sound holes?

    • @michalina_malisz
      @michalina_malisz  4 роки тому +1

      There is a lot of versatility amongst the shapes of hurdy gurdy, the most popular ones are lutebacks and bodies similar to acoustic guitars with flat backs. Same goes for sound holes, some of them are based on the same shapes as the violin ones, some are round with ornaments inside and there's a lot of shapes in between. :)

    What's the tuning capabilities of the drone string? Can it be set or tuned to any pitch?

    • @michalina_malisz
      @michalina_malisz  2 роки тому

      The drone strings (usually a G2 or C3/2) can be tuned down or up, one semitone works best in most cases, two semitones if you're tuning down, because this deviation does not change the tension of the string too much. You can also use a different string, a D for example. The easiest solution to change the tuning of the drone string is a capo - however with capos you can change the pitch up only.
