Well Jesus my dads aunt and uncle are twins Theodoro and Dorathia (Brazilian). 🤣😂 (and we have other twins Patricia and Patricia, Marcio and Marcia, and Leonardo and Lea. 😅😅🙃🙃😅
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were as annoying as all-get-out, but it was refreshing to see twins whose names were totally unrelated. In another case, Jenna and Barbara Bush were named for their grandmothers.
I knew twins named Nicholas and Douglas. You had to think about that for a bit to get it.
My mom's name is SuEllen. Is that very common?
Theodore is in Civ VI
Theodore is one member of the very famous singing group, Alvin and the Chipmunks, along with Alvin and Simon.
Given how popular Alvin and the Chipmunks were back in the day, I'm amazed he missed that particular Theodore!
The Chipmunks were named for three guys who worked in the studio with David Seville-- whose real name was Ross Bagdasarian.
Since gay men are "friends of Dorothy" maybe lesbians could be called "friends of Theodore" ? =)
WAIT I LIKE THIS
Not a bad idea
Hilarious
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is this a saying? I don't get it, can someone explain?
If you break them into syllables, then Thee-o-dore is Dore-o-thee backwards, so it's easier to see
O-dore-thee, o-thee-dore, thee-dore-o, dore-thee-o
You have saved us all time
thank you
this works similarly with "Lysa" and "Sally"
Thank you random guy
🤯
Ah Theodore, he's God's gift to sharks!
As a person named Ferdinand Theodore (the portuguese version, at least), I'm really glad you talked about both and bring great informations about them and their history that i would never know
Hearing your pronunciation of Theodore, I never realized until now that the Russian name of Fyodor as in Fyodor Dostoyevsky was the same but in Russian lol
Yup. It's quite interesting to see regional variations to names. The easiest one to study being "John"
The russian cyrillic alphabet used to have a letter like the greek "theta", up until the 19th century. Since the pronunciation of this letter had evolved to almost the same as "f", this theta was deleted in the russian cyrillic alphabet in the late 19th/early 20th century alphabetic reform (the one that got rid of the "short" i that the ukrainian alphabet still has, or the third "silent" letter like ь or ъ (the one with a horizontal line crossing the vertical one).
Some Greek dialects pronounced theta as F, while phi was an aspirated p.
Theodore Tugboat was Canada's answer to Thomas The Tank Engine. It was very popular show and a real full sized Theo tugboat called "Theodore Too" was built and until a few weeks ago was docked at the Maritime Museum in Halifax NS. In the last few weeks it sailed down the St-Lawrence to the Great Lakes, it's new home.
I grew up watching both
Theodore/Dorothy is pretty obvious. Try Alice/Adelaide/Heidi-- all derive from the German Adelheid.
An unexpected person with a similar name is Francisco "Pancho" Villa, that was actually a pseudonym he adopted, his real name was Doroteo Arango, a rare male version of the name in Spanish.
Yes, change your name to Rickpat, it’s beautiful.
Matpat be like
packrat
I love Theodore Tugboat! He was inspired by Thomas the Tank Engine.
There was actually some controversy lately as Theodore was just bought and relocated from the Atlantic port of Halifax to the lake port of Hamilton.
Yeah, Halifax is just not going to be the same without the life-sized "Theodore Too" kicking around the harbour anymore after ~20 years. Unfortunately Ambassatours were hit pretty hard with the drop in tourism last year and selling Theodore was not something they wanted to do but kinda had to do. The original Theodore model from the show itself is still safely on display in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
Not really controversy. More local annoyance (I'm a Haligonian)
Theodore is also a long variation of Teddy. And an even shorter version of Theodore is Ted. It's funny that Ted And Dora would be related names.
Teddy is the short of Theodore. Not exactly.
Roosevelt was nicknamed "Teedie" as a child. Teddy is a slightly more grown-up version which he took on later. He is the primary, perhaps only, reason "Ted" implies "Theodore" in the US. Elsewhere it's almost always short for one of the Ed- names-- Edward, Edgar, Edwin, etc.
@@kenaikuskokwim9694 I heard it was because he was to shoot a chained bear and refused.
@@grumpyhale821 you got it mixed up. The teddy bear was nicknamed after teddy Roosevelt, not the other way around
Ted is a nickname for Theodore because “th” was pronounced as “t” way back then, like it still is in Thomas, Theresa, and Esther. Also how we got Dot and Dodie from Dorytie. Funny thing, my paternal grandmother is Dotti, and my mom has a cousin Dodie.
Now Patrick, you’re going to go one on one with The Undatakah! Holla holla!
About that "Lego" comment, my Greek teacher told us that a lot of times, Ancient Greek works just like Legos, and you can take pieces of words apart and determine how they work. For verbs, you have a theme, but you can also have an augment for the imperfect and aorist tenses, a particle for the perfect tense, thematic vowels... a lot of pieces that change depending on the declension or conjugaison
Besides Teddy Long being a Theodore, we also have Ted DiBiase and Ted DiBiase Jr., along with Tyson Kidd who's real name is TJ or Theodore James
Once, Teddy Roosevelt had his boat stolen. Instead of letting it go and/or shooting the robbers dead, he made another boat to track them down. Then, in the middle of winter, he dragged the boat thieves on a multiple day journey to the nearest town to arrest them because he wanted justice instead of needless violence.
He was also shot in the chest right before delivering a speech. Instead of immediately getting medical attention and letting the gunman face the mercy of the crowd, he demanded that the gunman be unharmed and then carried on with his 84 min. 50-page speech (which was folded up in his breast pocket and was so thick it and his eyeglass case actually slowed down the bullet) before getting medical care, where the bullet was found lodged in his chest muscle. The doctors decided that it would be too risky to remove the bullet, so they left it in and Roosevelt didn't mind at all.
I've been a lifelong Oz geek, and I remember recognizing the similiarities between Dorothy and Theodore as a child. Years later the I'd be reminded of the connection when it was brought up in one of the Wicked novels by Gregory Maguire.
I've been on Theodore The Tug Boat out in Halifax (Nova Scotia), funny thing, use to watch the show as a kid, makes me nostalgic seeing him again...
I saw Theodore Too in Halifax, never got to ride it. When I visited the Maritime Museum, they had the full set of the CBC TV show on display inside.
I've got a niece named Thea.
That would be short for either Dorothea or Theodora.
apparantly there is a "theodore" in the "shin megami tensai" series of games.
also empress "theadora" is in civ 5.
Dorothea is a character in fire emblem three houses
Theodore is a Velvet attendant in persona 3 portable
Mellima!
Theodore was one of the cartoon singing Chipmunks. He was the tall one with glasses.
i know/knew a person named Theo. His name is (almost) literally "god" haha
I tried to find video game characters named "Theodore" and didn't, but I did find out that there's a web series called Video Game High School with a "Theodore Wong" in it.
Ahh yes, good ol Ted Wong
There’s a Theodore in Persona 3
Wasn't one of the Chipmunks called Theodor?
Yep, the one in the green sweater I believe.
My grandfather was named Theodore. His father, my great grandfather, was named Augustus and, obviously, his last name, like mine, was Bastian -- so he got the really redundant name.
Funnily enough, Theodore and Dorothy are both the names of fictional green dinosaurs who eat flowers.
Theodore here. Now I’m hella intrigued
Your name is cool!
@@rahbeeuh why thank you
@@makotoyuki345 you're welcome!
Dóróthea has a suffix which indicates it's a feminine name, not a regular compound noun. Similarly Andreas has a suffix to indicate it's someone's name, and not just the word for man (andros).
My favorite "Theodore" related name is Theodosia (alternative spelling Theodocia). Another variation of a female Theodore (nick name for Theodora/Theodosia if you will) is Theda.
A shorter name for Dorothy is Dora, so I like to see Dora the Explorer talk to Scarecrow, Tin Man, & Cowardly Lion in Spanish, in the land of Oz.
It may also be short for Theodora.
When I hear Theodore, I think of Theodore from Alvin & The Chipmunks & Theo Huxtable from The Cosby Show.
Patrick, Theodore Tugboat was created by the lead singer of the '60s rock group The Mamas and the Papas. And there is a real tugboat of him!
Theodore Roosevelt: God's gift to badassery
His son was not far behind… (the only General buried in the Normandy war cemetery).
@@allangibson2408 TR's son Quentin Roosevelt is also buried there. Quentin had volunteered to be a fighter pilot in World War I and died in combat. He was given a full military funeral by the Germans in occupied France After World War 1, he was reburied at a graveyard for American soldiers from the Great War. In 1955, Lieutenant Roosevelt's remains were reintered next to those of his brother.
Let's not forget every teddy bear is named for Teddy Roosevelt so they are Theos too.
Christopher Robin Milne, being English, formalized his teddy to "Edward Bear". It was Theodore>Teddy>Edward. His more common name, Winnie the Pooh, derives from Winnipeg. That's another story.
my papa just passed and his name was Theodore and i wanna name a further daughter after him! I like Dorothy lowkey , nick name could be dotty or teddy ❤️
Oh, there's also Theodore from "Alvin and the Chipmunks"!
If Theodore is going through a rennaissance, I wonder how much it's down to the Chipmunk that sang with Alvin and Simon.
A recent Doctor Who book was a Wizard Of Oz based book and had a character called Theodore that had an ending that really touched my heart. I had my thoughts about the revelation of that character, based on things they said throughout, only to have it confirmed in the final few pages.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics by Archie, one of the ancestors of one of the comics’ central characters, Sally Acorn, is named Theodore.
YEAHH THEODORE THE TUG BOAT! I am Nova Scotian and drove by the dock where the boat was kept. It was around a bend in the road too, so if you were driving at night it would just be that horrifying face in the darkness! The kids television show came on every morning before school, so many Canadian kids watched it growing up - that's why we're not creeped out! Too funny
In Greek there is a masculine version of Dorothy (Δωρόθεος) as well, just like the feminine version of Theodore.
I chose Theodore as my own name after my grandma, Dorothy. She wasn't a big fan of her own name but I want to think a few mixed-around syllables would have helped. Unfortunately can't ask her now :(
Chosen names ❤️ very sweet tribute
I literally realized how they're the same names while reading the title before I opened the video.
Shirley Povich was also the father of talk show host Maury Povich. The Washington Nationals baseball team named the media center at their stadium in his honor.
you deserve wayyyy more subs
Before watching the video:
Theos is God and doron is gift in Greek so adding them together means gift of God.
One of the few things I remember from my ancient Greek classes in school
@@thatmarchingarrow Yup. I remember researching the name Isidoros because I liked it and named my dog the feminine version. It’s similar with Theodore/Theodoros.
Theodore Roosevelt was a Republican at a time when the Republicans were the 'more liberal' party, but by modern standards TR had quite a few reprehensible characteristics. If he was zapped to the present day he would probably be able to change a lot of his views...but it would be a struggle.
as I understand it, he was very much a man of his time, and unfortunately a lot of the attitudes of his time were pretty reprehensible
If Theodore Roosevelt ran today, both Republicans and Democrats would vote for him. During his own time he was not much loved by the Republican bigwigs. They sent him to become McKinley's vo because they wanted to shunt him.
This is a realisation I made about 3 weeks ago when reading about eastern Rome. I broke it up into syllables and was like "oh shit". Essentially it's "gods gift" and "gift of god" lol.
all my life Theodore Roosevelt was my favorite president and then I learned my grandma was his younger cousin
Regarding gaming Theodores, there is a "Dorothea" in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Yes this is very late, but I got a "holla holla" to Teddy Long as he was mentioned in this vid. ICU playa ;) :)
Theodore flies under the radar because most of them go by Ted.
Oh no I named my youngest Theodore. He might end up that famous tiktoker. Named myeldest Cassandra, it took me a while to realize I gave both kids greek names, I'm not greek. Surprised you didn't go into the origin of why teddy is a nickname for theodore quite the story apparently involving Roosevelt and a bear
Holla holla - Teddy Long
Weird coincidence: I've lived in both Plymouth and Southampton (but in the reverse order to you).
Was not expecting teddy long memories to be unlocked today thank you
My grand mother's name was Dorothy. Interesting to find out its related the Theodore.
no video gaming Theodore? how abou Theo from Celeste 😀? you should play it btw, it's awesome!
Seeing your actual face is surprising, however, unlike some other face reveals... (I'm looking at Imkibitz here), your face fits your voice, and isn't a surprise.
Theodore Long would like you to know that you, Patrick, are going to go one on one versus the Undertaker tonight on Smackdown 🤣
When I think of the female version of Theodore, I don't think of Theodora but instead I think of Theodosia/ Theo the queen from the Ash Princess Book Series (it's really good).
I think of Theodora, like the wife of Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian.
For anyone else who's curious, Theodosia has the same meaning as Theodora, roughly "god's gift" or "gift of the gods"
My wife's name is Dorothy, and at 29yo she's met maybe 2 other Dorothy's less than twice her age lol. (And my name's Gordon, and at 31yo I can say the same...) Yay, old person names!
Theodore Roosevelt was bad assed. He completed a 84 minute speech after being shot in the chest.
Yes they are, just like variations of name John in my homecountry. Janez,Jan,Jovan,Johanes,Johan,Ivan,Ivo,Hans,Anza,Anže...
famous dorothys include wiz of oz and Dorothy Zbornak (i love you if you know the 2nd one)
You can do this with a lot of Norse names like Ulfhild-Hildulf and Friðgeirr-Gæirreðr etc.
I work at a landscaping company and we have a customer named Theo and she’s a wild one, to say the least. But kinda odd she has the male version of the name.
A more terrifying tugboat based show than Theodore Tugboat happened in the UK 4 years before that Canadian show. Look up the show TUGS. It's kinda related to Thomas the Tank Engine, but with tugboats and the characters look a bit more scary than the one you showed.
EDIT: Apparently the Canadian show was basically made by one of the people who did the UK show, hence their similar themes.
It is a bit like Þórey (female) and Eyþór (male) Both names are Þór. You know that name better as "Thor".. and ey. Ey can be "island i.e. an isle" or "not" sometimes written as "Ei" though the "Ey" is more common in names.
Thee a door. Door a thee
I'm so sure there was an snes game with a character named Theodor.
The shin megami tensai/persona games have a "theodore" in them and civilazation 5 has empress "theadora"
I once met someone named Gift while visiting some rellies & touring around South Africa. :D He told us when we asked about his name as it was a very unusual name & he said his mother named him that, cuz he was "a gift from G-d." :D
Shirley is also a town on Long Island. :D
He better watch out if he visits Germany! In German, the word Gift means poison or venom.
@@hamsterama Yeah? XD
@@kirabowie Yes indeed! It's a great example of a false cognate. Just out of curiosity, used an online dictionary to look up the word for poison or venom in Afrikaans. The word in Afrikaans is "gif." So, kinda similar to German.
@@hamsterama *nods* Yeah? XD *nods* Afrikaans is related to Dutch, which is a Germanic language like, of course, German. :D
*giggles* I'm just imagining an English speaker like myself trying to figure the meaning of a German sentence with "gift" in it, thinking the sentence is about a present (gift), when it's about poison! XD
Thank you for the laugh! :D
Are you God's gift to chipmunks? Just ask Alvin's brother Theodore.
I know a guy in his 50s named Theodore, Shirley died in the 98 the father of Maury
A gender-neutral nickname for Theodore and Theodora is Ted(d), which is a proper name in its own right.
On another note, if you have ever read The Westing Game you would be familiar with Theo Theodacarus, the Theodacarus family is stated to be Greek almost as soon as we meet them. My 5th-grade class was assigned to read The Westing Game and we had a party where the whole class dressed up as a character of their choice from the book and brought purple-colored foods, I came as Theo with a cake that had purple frosting but my dressing up as Theo was good the rest of the class legitimately thought I was a transfer student to the class starting that day until I started talking (I made my skin have that Mediterranian Greek look with bronzing gel and dyed my hair black, it took a few days to get back to my normal colors).
Here's an idea for some future videos, a comparison between Gender-neutral names and Unisex names, and some videos on what defines a unisex name with another on what defines a gender-neutral name.
Can you do Alice, Wendy, and Peter next?
I didn’t realize Theodore was that popular in the USA now. I wonder if they go by the nicknames of Ted/Teddy.
Mentions the tug boat, doesn't mention the chipmunk.
my friend has a character named Theodore and he's my favorite one
You forgot Theodore Huxtable (played by Malcolm Jamal Warner) from the Cosby Show.
Oh hey my name...... i remember being told "gift of god" meaning by someone i used to work with. Oh god that childhood show... been ages since i heard of it. No mention of Ted/teddy being a nickname/short form for Theo? enjoy the time off
The name reminds me of San Theodoros, the fictional Latin American country from the Tintin comics, I still love them to this day.
Theodore reminds me of the chipmunk and the serial killer. And my kindergarden teacher, her name is Teodora.
Also, Thomas the train is much scarier than Theodore the tug boat.
Ted “Theodore” Logan: co-founder of Wyld Stallyns, and haver of excellent adventures
Patrick is going one on one with da Undertaker
Shirley Crabtree AKA British wrester "Big Daddy": 1930-1997.
we're not on San Juan Hill anymore...
For "U" how about Umberto
Even the nicknames Dot/Dotty and Ted/Teddy sound alike
I know a set of twins names Dorothy and Theodore in English, and their respective Hebrew names, Natanya and Yonatan likewise mean the same thing.
Matheus/Matthew/Mathiaz/Mathieu meaning is "god's gift" too, does it mean that these and Dorothy/Theodore are the same name too?
Nathaniel too.
no, same meanings different origins.
i would argue that there is quite a huge difference between "a gift from god" and "gods gift"
when you say "gods gift" it brings about images of intelligence, or compassion, things that are not physical, but instead, qualities of someones being.
whereas "a gift from god" make you think of actual things, or even people, as opposed to the traits they posses.
like your actions and the way you represent yourself you make you "a gift from god" but its your inherent qualities, that would make you "gods gift".....you feel me?
dorathea=dorthy=gods gift
theadora=theorodore=gift from god
I think that's just you, I think both names just mean parents being thankful for their children and calling gifts from god/ god's gift.
@@HopeRock425 i mean, one is gods gift, the other is gift from god. i mean, its their actual meanings, and word order matters, in 99% of cases.
I don't see why god's gift can't be something physical and has to be something like intelligence, I don't get it. Plus the child is named god's gift, if it was referring to the fact that the child has a gift from god as in intelligence then it would be something like child with god's gift or just talented by god.
@@HopeRock425 i don't know....why do "cunning" and "guile" have "bad" connotations when in reality they are a morally grey trait that BOTH "good" and "bad" people can have and use? its just kind of how the usage of the words has been for so long that even though the meanings don't necessarily allign entirely with how they are used, they still have that "feeling"?
thank you for ACTUALLY engaging me on this and having a conversation.
@@stapuft I don't have a negative connotation of cunning or guile, those words make me think of Hermes, and I like Hermes, but maybe that's just me I gues.
i would love a deep dive into the name Elmer :)
a minute and a half before the video even starts?
cut to the chase
My mother is a Theadora. I had an uncle Theo as well.
The same happens to the greek name Cleopatra, the male version being Patroclus
i kindof realized Theodore means god's gift before this video because Theo- from Theology means god and -dora from Pandora means gift.
And of course there is Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss.
And then there's Empress Theodora, from daughter of charioteer, to prostitute, to Empress.
Where is the animation
