They commissioned a full orchestra to record the 1987-1991 theme, then the later themes in response to the ratings success from the John William's "The Mission" theme beginning in 1985 for NBC News programs. CBS Evening News ran a news ticker sound beginning as early as 1982 through 1987 in the early years after Dan Rather had become anchor after Walter Cronkite in March 1981. Until the 1982-1987 news ticker, as some had called it, it was just silent without any theme music at all. ABC News had their World News themes dating back to 1978 as well
@@jasonburger3533 ABC News switched from their long known electronic version of their signature 1978 theme tune to a more orchestral version of their theme tune by no later than 1990 since the 1978 original theme tune started sounding dated by that point and they also wanted to match the orchestral theme musics of their competitors CBS Evening News (which in 1990 was still using the 1987-91 theme before they switched to the 1991-2005/06 theme) and of course NBC Nightly News’ “The Mission” since 1985 in its forms. Abc News has since used at least 4 different theme tunes of their own since 1990. @@megamanj2004X Yes, ABC News had the electronic theme used throughout the 1980s and 1990s on News Briefs and Business Briefs as their very first World News Tonight theme and then changed it to a more orchestral sound with a lot of drumbeats by the mid-term 1978 general elections. They continued the earlier version as music going into commercial breaks. However, the main World News Tonight theme had become more orchestral as early as 1979 or 1980. That theme had continued into 1989 and then was updated and continued through 1996. Various versions went through the 2000s. The current version is a modernized 2014 version of the ABC News signature sound. That is more befitting for David Muir as the anchor and carries the classic sound into the modern era.
One of the most Fabulous. Videos ever made. The scenes of New York Breathtaking.Scenes of Great Grandeur.Accompanied by Some of the Most Beautiful Music Ever Made.
The one during the bulk of Dan’s tenure there in the anchor chair was by far the best .. His opening and closing themes during that time were completely emblematic of real, hard news
After Dan Rather, CBS never gave any of them any chance to build up ratings before dumping them. They were all outstanding in their own ways. I miss Jeff Glor being on the Evening News. Dumping him pushed me to watching ABC.
@@FEDERALSIGNALTECH No it's not. It's the first theme. Listen to the first one on this video and listen to the current one on the current CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell.
@@jayclean-mean9400 I've heard that it even before I watched this video and it is a remix of the Catie curric era theme song not the '87 theme song for Dan Rather I've done the research on this topic at network news music web site and according the the owner of the website said that it is the JAMES HORNER VERSION.
We place our burdens down in the twilight, and ask the world to be still, whilst we sleep... alas, the world keeps going, waiting for it's respite, and we wake, once again, to champion the cause, and seize the day. May we be the heroes of stories yet unwritten.

Thanks for posting this. I grew up watching the CBS Evening News with parents in the evenings. The closing theme from 1987-1991 is my favorite.

All just beautiful masterpieces. I get goosebumps with all of them

Hearing Rather/Pelley theme brought tears to my eyes.
The Rather/Pelley theme is back as of now! It was recomposed and remixed by Antfood.
Congrats for this excellent video! Greetingas from Brazil

The Evening News with Katie Couric was briefly broadcasted in free TV in the Philippines and I can remember the theme very well.

Agreed. Jeff Glor was good, among the best, but they did not give him a chance.
@@jasonburger3533 Glor didn’t want to board their anti-Trump train at CBS, so they forced Glor out.
CBS has been inconsistent for years. And it’s not just Evening News. The morning shows have been worse. Changing anchors and the name.
This is CBS

Too bad CBS’ “reporting” isn’t as magnificent as its themes.
