My neighbor is deaf and he is one of the nicest people I have ever met. I find myself here trying to learn sign language so I can have a conversation and thank him for being so welcoming and helpful since my wife and I moved to the neighborhood

So glad I found this channel. 35, had hearing problems since I was a child but honestly no one took it seriously so I didn't either. Last year my kids started to get so frustrated with me saying what like 4-5 times in row, no joke. Went to a hearing doctor, long story short I'm basically on the edge of being deaf. I got hearing aids EXPENSIVE but they help SO much. I still read lips, I still use CC on everything and then I realized my hearing isn't gonna get better. There's a great chance I will be completely deaf in my old age. So I'm gonna get a jump on it now and get my teenagers to learn so I can actually communicate with my family in 20 years! Thank you SO MUCH!
Im watching these. With my boyfriend because we both have speech impediments, and I use sign to talk to people when I’m uncomfortable and burnt out and he wants to learn it too so he can understand me.
Me growing up: “Don’t point it’s rude” Me now learning ASL: **casually throws that out the window** (This is meant to be a joke please don’t be offended!!)
This is very helpful. I like that you show the signs from different angles, and break them down into step by step pieces. I have a very hard time with facial expression in general, and most people find my blank expression confusing even when I am speaking. When you tell how to raise eyebrows with a certain sign, I can learn it as part of the sign, and helps me remember to do it. So many ASL videos say something like, "make a face like you are asking a question", but if I don't make any face to ask a question then that is not very helpful. I really appreciate the instruction on that. Thank you.
You know something funny is I feel like having nothing to unlearn could turn out in your favor. I have HUGE gestures and my face is about as readable as they come. With ASL my number one concern is that I'll confuse people when I accidentally gesture. I'm still hopeful since the "grammar" I've learned so far feels extremely natural.
same as this comment ! 😅 im autistic and struggle with facial expressions n just general phrasing 😭(edit, meant the crying emoji not the mindblown one…. mobile problems)
I love reading the comments from people learning ASL. Remember to just keep trying to learn, keep practicing. It's best to stay with it and get involved in a group or immerse yourself into it. The old phrase "if you don't use it, you lose it" is so true. There are plenty of videos on UA-cam and groups on Facebook that can keep you engaged. Love it!
As a first responder wanting to learn all I can, I have found myself here. I love the way you go into detail. It helps me so much. I was wondering if you haven’t made a video for first responders and medical professionals like nurses that would be superb! I’m going to look to see if you have after this video. :)
I wanted to start to learn ASL, this was my first lesson, thank you!! looking forward to do more with you, I’m 55 and hope I’m not too old to learn… Thanks again
I'm learning ASL because I sometimes can't speak for a few hours up to a day or two and since my Mother knows ASL it won't be a problem to communicate with atleast one person in my family. I also think that it's just nice being able to communicate other than with your voice.
I'm so excited here. You are the best ASL teacher ever! I'm a 76 yo grandmother who majored in Spanish and have in the past, and still am teaching it to my grandson, 8, as well as a little Korean, French, German, and now ASL. He is absorbing it all so he can be a bridge between himself and kids/people who don't know English so well, or cannot hear. He's such a sweet little citizen. I first learned words to a song in a church dance and worship group 20 years ago, so, retired, I'm overjoyed to be watching this video, and to be able to share with him to memorize words and phrases...children are like sponges: one time, and they never forget! I will practice these phrases the next several days and then watch this again over the weekend with John when he comes over. WE learned how to say elementary stuff in ASL like "I'm hungry and thirsty. I want to eat,👩👦" when the pastor takes too long, 😏and/or, "Let's go to the park and play, (after church), okay?" Much love to all. Thank you for your service here. SEE YOU AGAIN SOON FOR ANOTHER LESSON LESSON...about to go practice them again w/out looking!
Your teacher is wrong. Even when speaking nothing but verbal English using your hands to gesture and emphasize naturally is helpful body language that makes you appear more friendly.
You are the best teacher i ever found on UA-cam. Coz other lecture just showing their skill and doing rapidly instead of teaching, What's the point telling people that they are here to teach but seem likes showing off more than teaching. Thanks and Regards

I have watched a few people trying to teach ASL here on UA-cam but most all of them move through the sign too quick and aren't explaining the various hand shape. I appreciate you explaining how to create each shape in detail. I got frustrated with another instructor because I would pause, rewind, again and again trying to see the shape. Like in the phase "you ready". It took watching 5 times to see her fingers were shaping the letter 'r'. I don't have to do that with your method of instruction. BIG thumbs up 👍

Internet response to you're welcome/no problem= Actually the “you're welcome/no problem" issue is simply a linguistics misunderstanding. Older ppl tend to say “you're welcome," younger ppl tend to say “no problem." This is because for older people the act of helping or assisting someone is seen as a task that is not expected of them, but is them doing extra, so it's them saying, “I accept your thanks because I know I deserve it."
“No problem," however, is used because younger people feel not only that helping or assisting someone is a given and expected but also that it should be stressed that you're need for help was no burden to them (even if it was). Basically, older people think help is a gift you give, younger people think help is an expectation required of them.
I learned, from a professor at Gallaudet, that "I" is the letter "i" drawn toward the breast, thumb touchin breast. "Me" is the pointin finger, said she.

I don't remember the "No problem" in response to my "Thank you". Usually, I just got a beautiful smile and a head nod. But perhaps some of them did use that sign and I somehow didn't notice.
I've said it before. You're a fantastic teacher, Meredith. Thanks for the video, which I watched as a review and because I watch all your videos to offer support to you.
Im italian and all of this is just so natural!! (yes we can have a full on convo just with signs even without knowing asl 😂)
its so good that many of these are intuitive
watching further: jesus christ, some of these signs are directly included in italian handgestures! Like the Dont, or Have one. 😳😳
