Critical Mass Bike Ride

- This parking lot is the meeting spot for Fort Lauderdale Critical Mass, a group bike ride that takes place on the last Friday of every month. You might have a critical mass in your city, as it’s an international phenomenon. Although there are various Facebook groups announcing locations, there’s no official organizer or committee for any of these rides. Critical Mass is a cross between self governance and total anarchy, with a smile. Just find out where the ride meets, and show up.
As is usually the case, everyone here has chosen to follow Zoey around Fort Lauderdale tonight. She seems to know where she’s going. We start the ride through a neighborhood by the park, which I’ll need to weave through to get a shot of the front again.
If you use a bicycle to get from place to place, you’re used to dealing with cars. Even if you as a cyclist follow the laws, the majority of motorists wouldn’t even notice. To them, you’re just an inconvenience in their much more important lives, and roads are for cars. Not tonight. Tonight, motorists are the minority. This to an extent, is the original concept behind Critical Mass, but I find that most everyone is here just to have a good time. A lot of the participants actually get into cycling because of this ride, and as a result they become better drivers. I like that.
Since we’re out on a Friday night after rush hour has ended, most everyone is excited to see us. In years past, the group grew too large, and the police even got involved. Since then things seemed to have simmered down, and the ride has become quite predictable and dare I say, orderly. It only takes us a few minutes to pass through an area, and the response is almost universally positive. In some bigger cities, Critical Mass has all but ended due to the many problems that can arise from such a large group. Other masses continue with very few issues, even with tens of thousands of riders.
When we pass through areas, people always shout out to us, asking where we’re going. I should take the time to explain everything to them, but it’s more fun to say that we’re all going to Publix. For you non Floridians, Publix is a supermarket with exceptional sandwiches.
Generally, you can show up to Critical Mass on a bike or anything human powered. There are always a few creations among the group, like Benjamin’s Tall Bike.
The ride usually ends somewhere downtown, with much of the group dispersing. Wherever you are in the city, you’ll likely see more cyclists than usual late into the night.
So if you want to ride Critical Mass, it’s probably a matter of finding out where it meets in your city. Search Facebook or ask a cyclist. They’ll probably be happy to tell you. If your city doesn’t have a Critical Mass, just show up somewhere at the same time every month, and go for a ride. If you’re consistent, maybe people will start following you. It’s worth a shot. I've never had a critical mass event here where I live (Chapel Hill, NC); however, at my place of work we organize a "kidical mass" event where we get the elementary school kids out on a huge mob ride once a year... same principal, obviously.

San Francisco might still have Critical mass gathering but unsure of that. San Jose has an offshoot of that called San Jose Bike Party. Basically a ride with 3 stops with music bikes and DJs playing music during the stops for people to dance to. They also have volunteers riding trash bikes to pickup after people. Very colorful group.
Thats just daily bicycle rush hour here in Copenhagen to times a day :) We do the same thing though just with rollerskates.

Here in Stuttgart (Germany, not Arkansas) we have well over 1000 riders every first Friday of the month for critical mass. Because in Germany we have to file a notification for a public gathering - we automatically have police protecting the route. Police on motorcycles and bicycles help blocking intersections and clear traffic infront of us, in the back there are a couple of police vans blocking traffic from entering the procession from behind.

There's Critical Mass in Warsaw and few other polish cities too. It's hell of a ride! Every cyclist should attend one at least once! :)

In my area,our critical mass is called San Jose bike party. The largest critical mass /bike party in the Bay Area.

I randomly stumbled on ours in Portland a few weeks ago after getting off work. I saw a huge mass crossing the bridge and caught up, it was so freakin sick. Apparently we have one every Thursday night during the summer. Porland rocks. Awesome vid man!

I figured out we have 1 of these im Antwerpen BE but yeah I work evening shifts, I might just have to take a day off once to experience it. It is on my to do list, hope I can get to it sometime looks like fun!
Hey Seth I live in Medellin-Colombia and i'm very proud to say that we have a critical mass bike ride in our city. It's very organized and we've been doing this for 5 years once a week religiously. The ride has between 1500 to 3000 bikers aproximately. I'd be very happy to share more details with you since this is an amazing phenomeno.

looks like one of our weekly mountain bike night rides. And we do it every week twice a week year round.
We so lucky in Johannesburg South Africa were we have two at the same time on the last Friday. On the first Friday there is one in Pretoria that is only 25km away. So that is 3 in one week.

In my Merida/Yuc/Mex we have something like it's called turixes and its set every Wednesday of the month all year long and it's pretty massive too there's always around 300 to 500 cyclists every week and it's a lot of fun
even athens in greece has one called freeday. Its held every friday and every last friday of the month is the biggest freeday. Its pretty cool but they go quite slowly.

Wow is the nice video from your channel! I never been so interested in critical mass.
Here in San Antonio Texas the cyclists are the jack wagons even though they have bike lanes, my son and i started riding (me again, last time i really road was before he was born 1997). So far it's been pretty good because we are just doing the neighborhood right now but as soon as we build our stamina we'll venture out. San Antonio has a night ride i think once a month.
I love the channel and how you post videos about more than one discipline of riding, all of your videos are very informative and well put together! I recently bought a BMX bike and I've been riding it for awhile and there was a clicking noise and I determined it to be loose spokes. Is there any way you could do a video on how to tighten spokes? I watch the video on how to get bends out of the rim by tightening spokes but I don't want to jump into it and accidentally mess up my rim or strip the threads on one of the spokes. Even if you're not able to make a video like that I'll still stay tuned for all the great content, keep it up!

In Miami, thousands of riders show up every month. It's so packed that you have to stay ahead of the crowd to avoid collisions with n00bs.
Ft. Lauderdale CM is civilized, in contrast to how it goes down in Miami, as you can imagine. lol
You should come to the downtown Miami one although it gets crazy some times LOL
in our city there is critical mass when i found out about it i rode in it whole summer and winter but then it gotten not a fun place leaders who are pro roadbike riders chose difficult paths with steep hills and they ride pritty fast so after half course you are tired so it ends up being pain in the ass, big half of the group falls behind (one time i and my friend got left behind and we kinda didn't knew where we were). so now its just an game of keeping up rather then fun times like it supose to be

Kudos to you guys for stopping at the red lights. I've seen my town's Critical Mass be a nuance by blowing thru red lights. And their numbers are so large it creates a huge traffic jam for motorists.
