    The best thing to do about housing is potty train your iguana so it can be out in the house mostly cageless. They will often choose their spot to poop (mostly around a pool of water) and stick to it. So you can then replace it when they use it like a litter box. The best thing to do is be super consistent with your rewards with them. Mine also gets outside time to play in the sunshine though so she's spoiled.
    This video has good advice for food.

    Really well done video! I had an iguana for 15 years, and he got BIG! Great pet if you spend time with them, but too many people buy them for the kidlets and don't realize how to properly care for them. I had mine way before the internet, so I read several books. It also helped to have a vet who knew exotics and was willing to make house calls. Giving an iguana a shot is no picnic.

    Lol I almost lost it when I erroneously thought you said to feed shredded cheese but then I realized you were talking about grating veggies. I'm so glad you emphasized their care needs without vilifying them. I grew up with iguanas and love them but waiting until we buy land and build our dream home someday before getting them again. I think if you don't live in a suitable climate for an outdoor enclosure which includes me atm then they should really have free rome of a room with a basking area for each one and not be kept in cages unless you have like a full hight walk in closet sized custom enclosure but at that piont why not let them have a room

    Best video I've seen so far on taking care of these little guys. wish I could have known half of this stuff 18 years back when I first got my 2 baby iguanas. They both passed away 5 years later. One dehydrated he got in to puberty and I though he was sick! The second got a flea infestation from a new iguana and no mater how much I cleaned the tank they did not go away. For both cases I went to pet shops for advice and now that I think about it they didn't know anything. Gave me a spray for the fleas 😒 cleaned the tank everyday, they still died. Was such a great lost to me as a kid. They loved banana btw names were sticky and stinky

What I have learned with jesse is to let him come to me and not vixe versa. He seems to be thriving with me as compared to how he was at the pet store. I do lots of reading and reserching to make sure I am keeping him happy and healthy.

I want to make sure I’ve got the right lighting since I’m going to build it into the enclosure. Also what size would you recommend building the enclosure? If need be I have an extra bedroom I can take the couch out of and put his enclosure in, so I can do almost any size. He will have the run of the house when he’s bigger, I won’t be keeping him in the enclosure ...but yeah. I want to make the best enclosure possible.

    I'm thinking about getting an Iguana, I have owned a bearded dragon for 6 years before she sadly died because of a fungus transmitted through another reptile. All the vets told me she was exceptionally healthy and beautiful and that I was taking great care of her. Now that she is gone I am strongly thinking about getting an iguana. I was wondering, for someone like me who had a bearded dragon before, if an iguana would be a challenge compared to a bearded dragon. I am for sure up to the task of taking extra good care of it as I did for my beardie. The second question I have is if iguanas make good companions to sped time with.
    Thank you for taking the time to answer!

    Wow!! That was alot of information!! I live in south Florida they thrive here in the wild so l get to enjoy them without having to do all that today one was stuck in the plastic coated chain link fence 3/4 of the way threw - back hips & legs just would not go threw so it took 2 of us & we had to get her out backwards - it worked but she went right back into the chain link again 3 times!! She insisted on coming into my yard - actually l think she was looking for the place with room underneath where ducks come in & go out but she was not quite to that spot maybea,4 feet from it? - we left her alone thinking she would realize she has to back out not go forward - & she almost had it - so this 4th time before she realized she was free of the fence again l tossed her into the grass away from the fence & finally!! She went up in the tree - they walk by us in the yard like they could care less & munch on the greenery - l swear they recognize us & know we are not going to bother them - lve gotten some GREAT pictures!! I think this way is the absolute best - & they adore 🌺 hibiscus flowers!! If a flower blooms guaranteed it'll be gone before the day is out l LOVE them where they are - even though their not native their everywhere!!

      @LLLReptile1  10 років тому +1

      griffin bear When he's eating consistently, you can start trying to interact with him bit by bit. See if his appetite increases without the handling, and then you can start trying to hand feed him. Once he's eating out of your hand, you can start coaxing him out to be held for short periods, and go from there. Look at it more like building trust rather than "taming", and it'll be a bit easier. Make sure the UVB bulb is no older than 6 to 10 months, it may not be putting off enough UVB anymore.

    For wood in the cage for my iguana to climb on, I went to a lake near my home on got some large pieces of drift wood (so it would be smooth) and sanitized it to cut costs:)

    Is the night light necessary? I know there are other ways of keeping the tank warm at night and I intend on keeping my iguana in my room so I’d prefer to not use a night light

      Ceramic heat bulbs work well at night. Zero light, just heat, and they last years too. you can find several brands of them on our website, www.LLLReptile.com at the guaranteed lowest prices :)

    I read somewhere that iguanas can't process dietary d3, they can only synthesize it. Gonna do more research to find out for sure.

Now on a personal note, I've finally got Gertrude to take a shit in the tub and her eating habits are improving slowly. I have made puree veggies with a mixture of her Candy known as a variety of melons. I will keep in touch with you as by know I'm not ready to give Gertrude up so easily. Thanks for your help. Chuck

    Hi I am about to get a baby green iguana. I would like to know some things about it. Is it OK to be in home enclosures?
    Does it has any or will it be affected by any diseases that I should be aware of?
    What if its bites is that a bad thing for a human?
    Does it spread any diseases?

    • @amonkeybird
      @amonkeybird 3 роки тому

      no.. bites will not infect you with a disease. Thats fear propaganda.

      Most quality UVB lights need to be replaced every 10 to 12 months.
