- Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA, acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, Cross Construction Services, Inc. (Cross) of Lutz, Florida, performs the preparation for and explosives felling of an 11-story, reinforced concrete masonry unit (CMU) supported hotel tower located in Tampa, Florida.
Similar in construction to more than a dozen reinforced CMU buildings CDI has demolished in Las Vegas over the last 30 years, controlled, sequential removal of supporting walls becomes challenging when the concrete block walls are not filled with grout in-fill that evenly distributes explosives energy. The project was further complicated by a construction joint separating two sections of the tower, creating interruption of the delay sequence and protection materials as one section fell away before the other section could be dropped by CDI.
This CMU construction, combined with the risks of interfering with high-speed traffic on Interstate 275 immediately behind the hotel, caused Cross to look for a demolition method other than the use of a high-reach excavator. The concern of their client, the Florida DOT, for the safety of motorists on I-275, became the driver in selecting the time and method of demolishing the 11-story structure.
CDI had previously worked for FDOT, most recently in the emergency felling of the Champlain Towers in Surfside, Florida and had, four years earlier, successfully imploded the Red Side Garage at the Tampa International Airport, just a few miles away, carefully coordinating that implosion with traffic flowing off I-275, into the airport. When Cross suggested that CDI implode the building to mitigate risk and shorten duration of the demolition impact on the hotels and communities surrounding the Double Tree site, FDOT approved the plan, and worked closely with a team to bring it to fruition.
The building was felled at 1:00 AM on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, during a low ebb for traffic on the adjacent Interstate. Traffic was re-opened less than 35 minutes following the implosion, well within the time allotted by FDOT for the work.
A total of over 4500 holes were drilled in the structure and 815 lb. of explosives were loaded for detonation over a 7.5 second interval to sequentially bring down the two sections of the hotel tower. The two tower sections were independently covered to prevent fly of debris so that when the first section stripped away from the second section in the implosion sequence, protective cover remained in place to ensure safety of operations.
Vibration recorded at the adjacent community was no more than that created by traffic on I-275. There was no damage to improvements to remain and the project moved forward on schedule for early delivery by Cross to FDOT.

I love how CDI puts an entire civil engineering report in their descriptions
That's how you know they're true pros.
I’m sorry, there is no engineering report in the video description, just a VERY brief & general summary of the conditions and demo plan. No question though, CDI is the GOAT in their field!
@@bruceringrose7539 Yeah well for anyone who isn’t in the field it may as well be
I first watched CDI's work on a Discovery Channel Show titled "Dynamite Dynasty", about the Loizeaux Family.
The profrssional precision of their work is always a joy to watch.
Always amazes me how CDI can take something so complex. And make it look so easy. Best in the world at what they do.
First implosion I've seen of a place that I've been to
C.D.I. you guys don't play. you dropped that building feet away from the interstate safely , with little interruption to the high way . all they had to do was sweep the dust and chips of concrete of the road and that was the 30 minutes that it took from pushing the button and sweeping the road clean. the F.D.O.T. must love you C.D.I. .all i can say is it was a thing of beauty .
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I think you should put one of your camera on the top of the building implosion and see if it survives. Amazing video BTW
With the lighting conditions, certain angles makes it look like a model! Nice!
Those concrete hotels are sturdy structures!
Cool night shot! Great work! Enjoyed watching 🙂
Thank you!
The second view with the dark shadows was surreal. Very creative. Kudos.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!
I’ve been watching your great work for years! I really love your show “Blowdown”.
Fascinating. The explosions happen at a certain interval and at a point in time the interval becomes much smaller. I would love to see a video that covers how the event is modeled and talks about the hardware and software used to sequence all those bangs.
Amazing destruction video without CGI
All the more impressive, after reading the description! Nice work!
They count them because they know how many they put in !!
1 AM because of the traffic on the highway nearby?
Oh wow! I’ve also stayed in this hotel a couple times.
Awesome as always... that was really close to the freeway. But Cookie Monster is still upset. That place had really good cookies!
The description was great! Thanks for sharing the behind the scenes details!
Glad you liked it!
@@TheLoizeauxGroupLLC cdi have you tried letting demolition key to mrbeast?
Being that close to a interstate, it was better to have the blow down in the early morning hours, as traffic would have been a nightmare if done during the day
you cant lie CDI makes their demolitions look like a very epic video from mr beast with the level of editing they put
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
@@TheLoizeauxGroupLLC could you do chimney demolition compilation

Beautiful, especially at night
Glad you enjoyed the video!
It's always amazing to see these go off without issue. The fact that this channel is how I learnt why there are two sets of explosions in your demolitions is amazing. Keep up the good work!
I very much enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Glad you enjoyed the video!
0:54 Fire in the hole!
1:06 TIIIIIIMMMBEEEEEEEEERRR!!!
Brilliant close-up footage and the building imploded into dust right on camera and it turns black.
Thank you!
It shows how well built a Double Tree Hotel is built
How do you know if any of the explosions failed to fire and could blow up while the building is being cleaned up?
Oh the stories I bet that building could have told..always sad when buildings are demolished but have to make way for the future!
1AM? I'm sure the neighbors appreciated that.
Imagine those folks in the Marriott next door! Long day before and get woken up by the big BOOM!
Another job well done. Bravo!
Thank you!

R.I.P DOUBLE TREE HOTEL IN TAMPA, FLORIDA
I stayed there a little over a year ago I think? I thought it was getting threadbare and dated. Guess I was right.
Night boom💥🌆, Nice work impressive💯
Thanks!
The Michael Angelo of Explosives !!!
1 AM? Somebody didn’t care if they woke the neighbors up.🤣
1 o'clock in the morning and somebody's kids are stamping up and down the halls again... I swear that I am never going to stay in this hotel again!
First time I have seen explosives used as a scalpel so precisely
Aaaah this was a good one!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Cdi try released all your old videos demolishing old structures outside america like compilation
Please explain what happens in the first 10 seconds of the blast. What is happening on the inside of the building?
I watched this a few times, so cool to see!
Some channels have 100k subscriber giveaways. CDI should have a subscriber win, but instead of a prize they get to push the magic demo button on their next implosion🧨
Definitely went into the wrong line of work...
People sleeping in the Marriott next door must have thought they had been teleported to Miami Beach when their building started shaking!💥💥💥💥
Cute widdle 11-story hotel...
Very Nice 😎👍
I'm giving you a shoutout😊
A challenging implosion so close to the highway.
Why in the hell 1AM when anyone with a job is either at work or asleep?
Hopefully The latter!
Too loud for 1 AM!
Less then 20 seconds of noise, versus causing incredible traffic jams when they close the highway for half an hour.
Get over it.
What are the first set of detonations and then the second set doing? You explained it in one of the Blow Down documentaries, but I forget what it was.
Welp, gonna need a new Double Tree, I guess.
First the shape changes go off then the main chareres go off then it is reduced to easier to manage debris
I'm not sure shaped charges were used on this one (see description).
@@guyrhodes okay thanks for the info on this video on the hotel dimolision
Am I right in thinking that when you bring down Tower Blocks and other buildings like that using explosives, that they remove the glass from the windows on the floors where the charges are placed?
Do they ever leave the windows in?
Simon
Why don"t they recycle the air conditioning units on the roof. Probably still in working condition. Wasteful.
Wrong hotel. Oopsies! :D
Energetic demo rather than a hammer because both would mean closing the highway and this is faster?
Or chimney demolition compilation
No drone view ?
Couldn’t that have been converted to housing?
And who pays for it?
Things like that sound great until that question comes up.
👍🤠
Is there anybody better then CDI, I think not
Sauber 👍🏻
Why demolish it at 1am ! Wouldn't most people be sleeping at that time of the morning ?
Due to proximity they have to close the highway, therefore they picked a time that the traffic is naturally minimal, the implosion lasts less then 20 seconds, and that's that.
TLDR, get over it, they caused minimum issues.
The only way I I would
