SAUDI ARABIA 🇸🇦:
Common breeding resident. In Saudi Arabia, this ornate dove was formerly restricted to the southwest, south from Jiddah mainly in the Tihamah lowlands and eastern edges of the highlands. Around 1975 it began to expand its range dramatically due to agricultural development and now occurs across most inhabited areas of central Saudi Arabia into the Eastern Province and north to Tabuk Some birds wander widely during the winter.
GLOBALLY 🌍:
Resident: occurs throughout Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding equatorial forests) across Arabia to Lebanon, Iraq and Iran.
DESCRIPTION:
The Namaqua dove is a tiny sparrow-sized pigeon, typically 22 cm in length with a 28-33 cm wingspan, and weighing 40g. It has a very long black tapered tail, and the size and shape have led to comparison with the budgerigar. The plumage is mostly grey apart from a white belly, and chestnut primary feathers which are visible in flight. The adult male has a yellow and red beak and a black face, throat and breast. The adult female lacks the black and has a red-based grey bill. Young birds are dark blotched on the wings and shoulders, and otherwise resemble the females.
HABITAT:
In the southwest it breeds in acacia scrubland and cultivated areas near villages. In central areas it breeds mainly in farmland.
NOTE:
Over the last 40 years this small dove has undergone a dramatic range expansion in Saudi Arabia due to increasing agricultural development.
DIET:
Mainly small seeds from grasses and herbs taken from the ground.
ACTIVITY:
Diurnal.
