    At about 13:54 you are talking about driving M8 screws into the treads of the old water pump flange to aid in extracting the old pump from the engine.
    May I suggest;
    1) Screw the M8 bolts into the water pump flange deep enough so the M8 bolt ends do not touch the water pump mounting bolt holes.
    2) Rotate the water pump a few degrees such that the bolt ends will push against the engine cooling water jacket.
    3) Drive the M8 bolts in until the first O-Ring is free of the cooling jacket.
    4) Finish removing the old water pump out engine cooling jacket by pulling on those two M8 bolts.
    Just remove the risk of fouling those mounting threads from the equation altogether.
    Before installing the new water pump, put coolant (new or used don't matter) onto the new water pump O-Rings to make them slide into the cooling jacket easier.
    You video is remarkably well made, your talking easy to follow and you highlight points that will save your followers from time and money!
    Thank you for your time and effort making this video!

    I pledged $20 because your video is awesome and I love your shirt reward. I have a 2000 xterra with a 3.3 and would overheat at idle. Replaced water pump and problem fixed. Now my 2005 xterra 4.0l 4x4 is overheating at idle so your video is excellent in guiding me to perform this repair. I've been a mechanic for over 24 years and this is a complicated job for a water pump replacement. Good job on your hard work and helping me out in this task.

    A little heads up for you guys. Keep rotating the crank pulley with depressed tensioner until you see/hear the cam flop over. Otherwise, there will not be enough room to slip the wp out as easily as depicted.

    You have the best Nissan videos out there... Yours have helped me out alot... I was ready to take my leaky water pump/weep hole in to the dealer today but after this video I figured ill do it myself... Ive alveady removed and replaced the assembly that holds the fan clutch and the fan clutch, radiator and shroud for previous replacements on my 06 Pathfinder so I might as well do this.. the dealer wants $800 but I think this time im going to do it myself... 2 years ago they got me for $1800 for a new tranny computer.. and that was because I didnt have the tools to program the new computer... but had removed it with the valve bottle trying to replace that brake solenoid. Again Thank you for what you do and screw the ones who gave you a thumbs down...

    5 years later still a work of art thank you very much for your details instructions. My issue came about after my radiator was purposely damaged by a mechanic here in Compton California. Due to myself not wanting to deformate ones character nor be at fault or sued for slander of their name or business, I'll leave out the name of the black and yellow painted shop. I do now see that that was the problem more than likely had I just done that in the first place none of this would happen however I am replacing radiator clutch fan and water pump all at the same time anyway thanks a lot godspeed on your journey. Keep putting out these awesomely detailed videos so that no one has to go throug what I went through with thoseshady mechanics.

    Hello Ry, Thank you for your video it was very useful to me. I had to replace the water pump on my 07 Nissan Frontier. It went smooth without a hitch. I would like to offer some feedback on my experience that may help other viewers of your video. You can use a 3/8 drive socket T bar inserted into the square on the drive belt tensioner to use as a lever. You're right about not dropping the tensioner and water pump bolts down inside the timing chain cover. I felt like I was defusing a bomb taking those out and bought a magnetic socket drive to put them back in. When turning the crankshaft clockwise and counter clockwise to get the slack to first remove the tensioner then to get the slack on the other side to remove the water pump be super careful not to apply too much force or you could jump the timing chain on the main crank drive = not good... Thank you again. Great job!

    Your videos have been a godsend, thank you so much for all you do. That said, I've noticed several videos where the actual removal of a part was not filmed. I understand that you can't exactly hold a camera in the right place and remove something like this at the same time, but man... It would be great if you found a way to edit these things in. I changed the head gaskets on my 2005 Xterra SE over the last few weeks, and when I got everything put back together, I had a coolant leak coming out of the weephole behind the water pump. Now I can't get the chain slack enough to pull it out and it's about to the point I'm just gonna take the whole damn timing chain cover back off! I'll skim the comments to see if there are any other tips added, and really, your videos have been such a blessing.

    Ry, thank you for this video. Very helpful to have watch you do this job before doing it myself. I made one mistake that others can learn from. I did not insert a locking pin or wire into the tensioner after working it back to its contracted position. You can't get the water pump out or in until you fully relax all pressure on the chain tensioner. You also risk shooting the plunger and spring into the engine if you try to remove the tensioner without inserting the locking wire/pin. I found a binder clip in the kitchen and straightened one of ends of the wire and that worked perfectly. While the job has many steps, it is easy with the tensioner fully retracted and locked. Thank you again!

      I left my comment on the wrong video, I replaced her thermostat and temperature sensor, with help from your video. Thank you. I also replaced her blower motor resistor, which was melted, and then her a/c control panel. Turned out there was also a blown fuse in a fuse box located next to the glove box, that I didn't know was there, so I'm not sure if there ever was a problem with the control panel, I still haven't tested the old one. Her heat works better than when she first bought it now, I'm sure due t the thermostat and temperature sensor replacement that I wouldn't have been able to do myself without your video.
      By the way, a mechanic tested the system, confirmed it was the control panel and said he could replace it for $300, it cost me $45 to do it myself.
      Hopefully my info will help anyone having similar problems.
      Again thanks.

Dealership wouldn't do it unless they did a timing belt as along with it. $3.200 to both. It's probably smart to do both, but I'll roll the dice on just the water pump. Thanks again!

    Awesome video and thank you. I'm having the same temperature issues with my 2007 Nissan Frontier. It is a standard transmission. When the vehicle runs idle, the temperature gauge begins to climb. However, as soon as I drive (about 100 feet or so) the temperature drops to normal. I've purchased the thermostat but should probably by the temperature sensor too. If this doesn't fix the problem, I'll go to step two which you showed in this video. Did replacing the water pump and tensioner fix the temperature problem?

    Ry, my haynes manual recommended I drain coolant from the block (in addition to draining the radiator). I could not find any drain plugs on my v6 4.0 liter (07 frontier). I am worried about coolant getting into the oil. I believe you mentioned this i the video. Did you have any issues with coolant cross-contamination? Did you figure out how to drain the block?

    • @Rythecarguy
      @Rythecarguy  8 років тому +5

      To be completely honest it was only a little fluid and I just let it fall into the cover, I didn't drain anything from the block. If you drain the anti-freeze from the bottom of the radiator then you should not much of anything in the block. also, I did an oil change shortly after to make sure it was all cleared out. If you coordinate this with an oil change you should be more than fine. If you see that a lot of fluid comes out for some reason then do not drive your truck until you change the oil.

      Hey man, thanks. This water pump replacement was an attempt to fix an overheating issue I had. I ended up doing the temp sensor, the thermostat, and the pump. I was at 132k when I did these. Hope that helps!

    • @eldorado96
      @eldorado96 6 років тому

      Jordan Horst I second that question. A water pump is the potential source of leaking and noise when the bearings and seals crap out, but is never (?) the source of an overheating issue unless something catastrophic has occurred, like a complete separation of an impeller from the shaft. And I personally have never seen that in metal clearance type pumps. (Referring here to the exception in rubber impeller friction pumps; e.g., Jabsco, used for the external water side of a marine heat-exchanger system.) And in the event of that separation, you would be popping off steam and/or seizing the engine, not just running a little warmer than normal.

    • @pono321
      @pono321 6 років тому

      eldorado96 what about overheating quickly from a cold start, Thermostat, radiator and fan clutch are good.

    • @eldorado96
      @eldorado96 6 років тому +1

      pono321 I covered that in my earlier comment. You would suspect water pump if there was no cooling (and a relatively quick and severe overheating condition) but that's not the original condition described. He said it was running a little warmer than normal.
      This was a great how-to video, but I'm still stuck on the implication that the original problem didn't warrant it. It still feels like throwing parts at a problem rather than making a true diagnosis.
      The thermostat was replaced, but it could be flawed out of the box or calibrated to a higher heat range. Given everything else being normal, I would be inclined to inspect the radiator more closely for occluded flow.

  • @oswalddesign
    @oswalddesign 5 років тому +1

    So I am having the same issues as you. Temps rising while sitting still. Rev the motor up the hand goes back down towards normal (so the water pump is working). However, using the bluetooth scanner, it shows my actual temps around 226-230 (getting dangerous). We have replaced the radiator (bc of a crack). Replaced all hoses. Replaced the thermostat and Temp sensor. Then the water pump (but the old one turned out to be okay). Next the fan clutch (it was bad). Burped the system. And using the All-makes All-models coolant 50/50. Not the blue. However, we are still experiencing the same thing. About 20-25 minutes of driving, the Nissan gets hotter. The temp gauge says it still in the okay zone. But the Bluetooth connector reads again...226 and it will hold steady at 226-228. But then you stop and it begins to creep to 230 (235 was as far as it got). However, it showed it was below the small tick mark before the H zone on the gauge.
    Have any suggestions? Are we missing something? You mentioned yours still creeped up and you replaced the water pump. Did you ever resolve the overheating issue? Thanks! (Great instructional too)

The coolant in the Nissan flows up and down instead of side to side. This allows blockages to build up in the bottom of the radiator. ALSO. We discovered three thermostats did not work properly. Placing the thermostat (brand new) in a pot of hot water on the stove with a thermometer, you can see how it reacts. At 180, it should begin peeking open. At 190, it should be about half way open. At 200, it should be fully opened. Two of three thermostats opened half way at 205! And then fully at 225-230. The third thermostat was good. Check your thermostat. Don't assume it is good because it is new.

    Nissan made some changes through the years. I'm working on a 2010 Xterra and the fan shroud on mine completely encircles the fan. So the fan has to come out before the shroud can be lifted out. I'm having to work through the slit to get to the bolts holding the fan onto the pulley. The factory has them so tight that two of them rounded off (10mm) and I'm off to get the vice grips. I just wish they'd snap off as I'm replacing the bracket that holds the bearing for the fan. And it comes with new studs.

    I had an overheating problem on my Nissan a few years ago. I had no intentions of opening up the front of the engine for a water pump replacement. The shop did that and replaced the water pump. Over heating still happened and they replaced the thermostat. It still over heated. Once they got an OEM thermostat from Nissan the problem was solved. I think they got the thermostat from NAPA and it may have been for a different model or sized engine. What a costly mess. Oh....by the way, they tried a radiator swap and that didn't work.

    When you refilled the coolant, how did you insure that no air pockets existed in the top of the block? I understand there is no bleeder screw on the top of the engine which the first gen x may have had. My shop used a vacuum system to evacuate the air.

    Great video, helped me a lot. I have scoured the web and can't find anything about this, please bestow your wisdom...
    When I depressed the tensioner all the way and put the pin in the chain came down with it and stayed tight. I ended up removing it "under tension" which didn't seem to hurt anything. I had to fool around to get it back in but could only get enough slack on the chain for the tensioner to go back in fully depressed, the guide and chain are tight against the piston and it isn't extending. The tensioner functioned fine in free air and sprung fully open. Is this a problem?

    I have a question about the replacement of this water pump.
    Typically, the weep hole in a water pump will divert water to the outside of the engine to indicate a compromised water seal in the pump.
    From what I can see here, there is no external outlet if the water pump weeps.
    So where is the water going that would weep out a water pump with a failed water seal?
    It looks like a failed water pump seal would dump coolant into the timing chain area and contaminate the engine oil.
    Let me know your thoughts, my brother in-law has an 05 Xterra that was not heating until I added about a quart of coolant.
    So I need to find where that coolant is going.
    Thank you again!!

    • @Rythecarguy
      @Rythecarguy  Рік тому

      Yes, there does not appear to be a weep hole but if it does leak then yes, it would 100% dump into the oil. Pretty stupid design.

      No, if you just rotated the crank a little to loosen it then it will be fine. If you're finished putting the water pump back in you can rotate the crank the correct way and you will see it tighten right back up.

      I thought that the bolts go through the pump and push against the body and that is what makes the pump push forward. Im guessing it works something like a steering wheel puller or harmonic balancer pulley remover. Idk im just guessing. How hard is it to actually change the water pump. Ry makes it look easy but i know its prolly alot harder then it seems.

I then start driving it and now the water temp gauge is going HOT. Now, I wasn't having an issue before but wanted to replace them due to 218K miles. It was working fine before but now it's overheating. Is the pump bad now all of the sudden?

    Thanks for the video. i did want to ask you a question about these xterras. I am trying to diagnose an issue occuring with mine. i have a 2012 with 100k miles. Runs fine and doesn't overheat. Transmission coolant has been bypassed and new radiator for transmission installed. My issue is having engine oil in the coolant but not the opposite. The transmission has been completely eliminated from the equation. i am trying to trace back where the fluids can mix.
    1- Head gasket but highly unlikely to be culprit as it doesn't overheat
    2- Oil cooler?
    3- Water pump?
    any other places these fluids might mix?
