What makes this so spectacular are the musical interpretation skills. Most WCS, even top ranking ones, are musically 'deaf'. It's a case of the hearing partner trying to lead the deaf one. Ms Rutz has a near perfect musical memory, and in all her J & J's she tries to 'set-up' her partner. In this case her partner is as musically aware as her.. . . .the result is beyond perfection.
On a further note. The 'playful' moments worked because both dancers were giving each other 'space'. You should be able to 'hear' the break in the music coming up. Unusually in this case both dancers can hear it. So they waiting for one or the other to come up with an idea to fill the space. At .11 RR gets the idea first, and Melisa waits for him to move first. At .25 Melisa gets the idea and RR gives her the space to run with it. They are playing with each other and the music.
James Cotton Blues Band - This is a live version from 1976, I believe. There are several recordings of this song from this period. I think the album in "Live and on the Move". It's edited since the original is 7:20 in length.
i agree! sadly this seems to be the only dance video by Robert and Melissa on youtube. They've probably danced again at some point in their pro careers but i can't seem to find any videos
If the song is How long can a fool go wrong who is the artist it is not the popular version on the net by James cotton unless this is a remix. I would love to know who really does this version
This is in my top 5 west coast routines. So fun!

I love that Robert isn't afraid to be anabashedly cute when he dances.
Epic. 5 stars for having fun to the MUSIC :)
Beautiful connection with the music and each other truly some of the best dancing on youtube.
All lead/follow :-) Those were all playful moments, "mimicking" one another. But nothing was "discussed" before we danced. Glad you love it!
This dance always makes me smile. Thank you for sharing.
That looked so fun, playing to the music... wow...
one thing I love about WCS is the musicality. This is a great example of it! well done!
