Pure DCM on your skin evaporates quickly. But when it is gelled, like in paint remover instead of evaporating and cooling your hand it stays and burns!
Hello, is there any chance that you might be updating this or making a video for how to make it since paint/varnish removers containing methylene chloride are vanishing from shelves?
It'd probably just be the exact same procedure. Maybe simpler if the product doesn't contain another solvent that has an azeotrope with it (like this one did)
I actually spilled A LOT on my hand and arm. I opened the can and it was under pressure and I didn't have gloves on. It felt fine, then started burning like hell. Definitely felt like the time I poured conc. HCl on my hand.
Nile Red Take care not to get DCM on yourself if you can. I worked with it for several years and became sensitized to it. The slightest drop now hurts like I've been thrown into lava. Other than that it's a great solvent: low toxicity (all things a relative), not really flammable, dissolves everything (relative again). Damn hard to get the EU now though.
FYI the Jasco brand (WMBarrCo; chems in major chains like Walmart and Lowe’s) stripper is now “green” with methyl carbonate replacing the methylene chloride.
Would a can of dry carpet stain remover be better for extraction? The product/brand I use on my carpet contains approximately 40-60% DCM and 1-10% cyclohexane the rest I imagine is propellant and other solvent (chlorinated or not?) impurities .
While obviously not the most efficient option, is it possible to make dcm through a free radical chlorination of methane at home? If so, you should do a video on it!
Eric Fussell you should react methane with chlorine and then do a fractional distillation to separate the DCM from the chloroform and the carbon tetrachloride. Not really simple
I'm a cosmetic chemist so I'm unsure how these agents react in chlorinated solvents but carbomer, xanthan or guar gum are my top 3 pics. Carbomer I would assume be your best bet as it's in alot of industrial products and pharmaceuticals.
I bought on eBay, several low actinic flasks... I am seriously basic chemistry, but I want to extract caffeine. Would the DCM be bettor off with aluminum wrapped flask or a low actinic flask?
Aluminum wrapped flask. The incoming UV photons from sunlight will degrade the DCM causing side products to form. Low actinide glass being red still allows for transmission of light through the glass. Tho it be at lower wavelengths, Miron Glass did a few studies showing dark violet glass being the best for photostability. Aluminum foil blocks ALL wavelengths of light and will always be your best bet.
Are there any good alternatives to DCM except maybe Chloroform since it is almost just as bad? I personally am not able to find any products containing it in the stores I know of. In Germany it has been strictly prohibited in 2010
DCM is waaaaaaay better than chloroform. A good alternative is toluene or xylenes as they're less toxic but they're quite high boiling. You could also use diethyl ether, but it's quite dangerous.
Chris Lavers An emulsion is a mixture of two or more liquids that are normally not mixable. Like oil and water. This can lead to small particles of one of those liquids to disperse in the other one, leaving a rather gelly or gooy mixture, that can clump up.
I want to see, how to realy perform the reaction between Cl and CH4 to get a pretty high yield of DCM. In Europe it is not for sell, since EU sayd it is to dangerous to use. Still in organic Synthesis it is absolutely neccesary sometimes. Hot to get DCM if no one sells it anymore?
I have a question about DCM. I want to know how can I be safe with it, I mean do I have to wear gas mask or something like a cloth because it's toxic? Is it's toxicity is about the same like methanol?
Many people seem to be paranoid about methanol. To me, methanol is very safe. You need to literally drink it to have problems. Also, the vapor pressure isn't too high, so there isn't even a big risk of filling a room with it. For DCM, the vapor pressure it pretty high, so the moment you open the container you will probably smell it. The toxicity isn't too bad though. Honestly, if you are running a reflux or something, you won't even smell it. However, it is still good to do it outside or in a well ventilated area. The danger comes when people use it to clean and they cover large areas with it in poorly ventilated areas.
I've done the extraction of cinnamaldehyde already and I am editing the footage. You get like 0.5% by weight from cinnamon sticks. It is hard to get a lot of it though.
Couldn't this have been done by a simple hot water extraction? Methanol is easily soluble in both hot and cold water while DCM is only partly soluble in could water.
To ensure good contact between the water and the DCM and methanol mixture so the methanol which is water soluble will be washed out. And it's called shaking but more like tilting the funnel back and forth and opening the stopcock occasionally when inverted to release the pressure of any DCM evaporating suddenly. If it doesn't form a milky emulsion it will be two layers one in top of another with sometimes isolated drops of one phase in the other. You can see the different phases clearly usually because they have differences in refractive index. The milky emulsion is just really small drops, like oil in vinegar in a well mixed salad dressing.
do you see the set up he has at 0:55 the piece of lab-glass that's above the left Round bottom flask, if you didn't have that piece it would be just a distillation and you could do it the same way. the idea behind distilling is you have a mix of liquids of different boiling points. lets say you have mixture of a liquid that is made up of 2 liquids liquid A has a boiling point of 100C and liquid B has boiling point of 50C. let's say you heat the mix to 60C liquid B boils and travels up the glassware when it hits the top it goes into the condenser that's the long sideways glassware, you can't see it but he has cold ice water running threw the condenser making it cold. when the gas that was liquid B gets cold it turns back into liquid B and then it falls down that pipe and into the flat bottom flask on the right. after sometime the flask on the left at temp 60 will not boil because all of liquid B has moved threw the glassware and is in the other flask. so with different boiling points you can use distilling to separate out mixtures of different liquids. the next part at 2:10 where he removes the methanol he is using a separatory funnel this works on the two liquids having different density, the separatory funnel is just a funnel with a valve so you can drain the liquid on the bottom by turning the valve. so he makes one of the liquids in the mix have a greater density it then falls to the bottom of the separatory funnel he slowly turns on the valve to drain off the heavy liquid. much of chemistry is separating mixtures of things. that way you can do your reactions in the correct amounts without other stuff going on. look for the underlying principles over instructions.
If by "problem" you're referring to toxicity, keep in mind that the caffeine will be crystallized and dried. Methanol itself should be one of the first things to evaporate/boil.

you can seperate ethanol from methanol by fractional destillation, as far as i know, they do not form an azeotrope. i still strongly advise against ingesting this ethanol if you don't know exactly what you're doing, since you will probably have trace amounts or other impurities left. a simple destillation will definitely not be enough, since the boiling points are quite close together. seperating methanol from ethanol by mixing it with water will not work, since all three compounds are completely miscible with each other.
A good way to separate methanol from ethanol are molecular sieves. Though nothing will ever remove every trace of methanol from your ethanol if you're doing this in an amateur lab.
No, because they are both infinitely miscible with water. This only works because DCM is immiscible with water but methanol is miscible. Therefore the water will wash it from the DCM.
