Try listening with their grilles off and see if you prefer the sound that way. I've had a pair from new in 1996. I need to restore mine... I use a GFA-5500 Adcom MOSFET stereo amplifier with them...given the L7s are 6 ohm, it's probably about 250 watts per channel, with a Sonic Frontiers SFL-1 SE (later upgrade by the original designer) hybrid preamp. The speakers likely sound fine as you have them, but if you ever want to hear something different with the speakers, they really do like a lot of power. While their sensitivity is fairly high, I recall testing which showed they are somewhat of a complex load for the amplifier. It's not just about the loudness...it's more of how clean these will play and not sound strained.

These are great speakers, but you won't hear the bass the way you have them placed
