Seahorse are fish.
A seahorse has 3 main fins. Seahorse also have a 4th tiny fin just below their belly. Seahorse use their fins to help stabilize their body. Even though a seahorse moves its fins very fast, they are not fast swimmers.
Seahorse have tails. Seahorse use their tails to grab things. Their tails help them stay in one place even if the water is moving around them.
A seahorse has a neck. Most fish do not have a neck.
Are seahorse vertebrates or invertebrates? Do they have a backbone? Yes, seahorse have a backbone so they are vertebrates.
Seahorse do not have ribs. Instead seahorse have protective rings that extend all the way down into their tails.
Seahorse have gills on each side of their head to extract oxygen from the water. This is how they breathe.
Seahorse have excellent eyesight to help see predators.
Seahorse live in 3 main habitats. They live around sea grass beds. Seahorse live around mangrove tree roots. They also live in coral reefs. All three of these locations provide protective cover from rough water and cover to help them blend with their surrounds.
A seahorse does not travel far during its lifetime. A male seahorse only lives in an area about 1 square meter in size.
Seahorse eat tiny shrimp and fish. Seahorse have to eat most of the day because they do not have a stomach.
Birds, sharks, rays and crabs eat seahorse.
Many seahorse can change their color to blend in with their surroundings.
