  • Hikers often carry survival kits into the wilderness but, how about a survival kit in the lining of a jacket? Ive created an experimental one and the basis for it is a Kochanski survival scarf. Lets have a look at it and see what all Ive done and Im open to other suggestions as this idea develops. Reallybigmonkey1 reallybigmonkey really big monkey

Wearable kit, with personalized handmade gear. Dave and Nick ride again! I believe your idea for a gear pocket on the back is a great one, similar to the large back "envelope" style pocket on a hi visibility surveyors/construction vest. As for fan suggestions, I was surprised by the lack of mule tape in your cordage choices. 2nd I'd suggest wrapping a poncho liner around one of your grills to keep it flat and structurally rigid so it didn't bunch up at the bottom of the new pocket on the back, or sew in an internal "clothesline" hanger from shoulder to shoulder inside the back storage pocket to fold your blanket or woobie over to keep it flat and less bulky. Thanks for inviting us along Gents !

I like how you get me thinking. My first suggestion is to add a hood. Hoods trap lots of heat coming off your neck and back, they shield your neck from the cold wind and will come in handy if you use my next idea. Where you have your lining, substitute a pouch. A pouch as wide and deep as you can make it. Make it out of wool or an insulating material of your choice. Make the pouch detachable so you can remove it, step into it, velcro or zip it to the top (jacket) and with your new hood, you have a makeshift sleeping bag. Mountaineers have outfits similar to this so they don't have to bring sleeping bags. The pouch would also add lots of insulation to your back and sides if wide enough when stowed away. Thanks for the fun videos.

Right here I have a project idea for you. Get one cold weather full jumpsuit/hunting suit. Cut the sleeves off about 3 inches lower than the shoulder seam. Take out any zippers. Use the insulation from the cut off sleeves and add to the hip area of the hunting suit on the inside. Remove the collar. Sew Velcro closures down the front. Rip out the inseam of the legs and sew them straight down. You've made a sleeping pad! Take the outer fabric from the cut off sleeves and make a signal flag. Make a wool felt liner for the inside for cold nights. Leave the bottom open and the shoulders open so you can adjust wool liner. Make carry straps out of the cut off pockets and collar. Love your videos!

Absolutely genius Dave. This is a fantastic & endless project with the possibilities it has. I think the back pocket would be a good addition for you to add much more gear to make things more comfortable for you, but I would either put in 2 vertical pockets, or even split the back into 4 pockets to avoid everything just falling to the bottom and becoming cumbersome & bulky, but I’m sure you’ve already thought of that. Your genius mind comes up with some incredible inventions & this is the most easiest of things to grab as you walk out the door on a day to day basis. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to seeing where you take this. As for the sleeping sack, I think it needs to be much more wider to not feel so claustrophobic in the night, and also for the benefit of the hammock. Great job. Sending as always, much love brother 💕 God bless you & Nick.

Good morning. You bring a whole new meaning to the word "prepared"! People laugh at me sometimes because I keep various items in my car, just in case. But, I don't care. If something happens and I get stranded somewhere and no one finds me for a week or two, (wouldn't hurt my feelings. I don't like crowds. By crowds I mean 2 people), I will survive just fine. Nice to see this Dave, I like the concept of carrying essentials on your person, and distributing the weight over the body by using various pockets, etc. Particularly when the clothes don't end up looking like you are wearing a bunch of stuck on pouches, and are carrying as much as you have. It reminds me of Lonnie's magic vest from Far North Bushcraft and Survival. He seems to pull anything and everything out of it!
Just a small tip on the survival scarf hammock: If you fold the end over a stick before wrapping the rope around and back through the loop, you end up with footrests, sort of like "highway pegs" on a cruiser motorcycle. The stick also helps the bindings hold. You can do the same at each end, obviously, but the foot end is quite useful. Alternatively, you can suspend a stick from your guyline with some cordage in a triangle "A" configuration and also have a footrest. It works best if the stick is crossways, and underneath the hammock end. It doubles as a gear hanger too.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1

I'm glad you liked it Sean! I hadn't thought about it but get rid of the camo and the even weight distribution would make this the ultimate gray man jacket! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching

@@Reallybigmonkey1 If you were looking for inspiration on your next scarf Dave, look up the Norwegian "Jerven Fjellduken". It's a multi-use shelter bag system. You can add zippers to your scarf on each side, and either open them to stick your arms out, or zip in sleeves, which would work with your Pants-sleeve idea too.

I had thought about sewing a fishing vest into an oversized field jacket in the past. Fishing vests are loaded with pockets. I do posess a fishing vest for summer use that holds an 8x10 tarp, folding camping stove, fishing kit, first aid kit, fire supplies, water purification, etc. and etc. I have yet to develope my cold weather survival/ camping wear. I can set up Kochanski's super shelter with my 3 season setup. A good high quality pocketed vest can carry as much as a small to medium backpack. I carry an old military survival rifle/shotgun on a paracord sling with paracord wrapped around both barrels. For survival fishing I carry K-Bar's hand reel. They are great and very reasonably priced. I also carry some auto- fishermen that doubles for snares. They are spring loaded. I use both natural and artificial bait. I carry bugnetting as well. My hat has a pocket in the top where I put in face netting and for body netting I use a trouser pocket. I still have to work on innovating my winter coat or vest or combination.

Hey Dave. Great idea! You might want to have arm holes on your scarf. If you walk around the woods with your arms inside, you won't be able to break your fall or push aside branches etc. I've seen another jacket with a drop-down waterproof tail for sitting on. I like your idea for a big pocket on the back or even multiple pockets. The surveyor vests have zippered pockets on the back. You can also add a bunch of smaller pockets on the arms for things like ferro rods, wash cloth, keys etc. I have an M-65 jacket that had a loose liner. I sewed velcro on the bottom (creating an inner pocket) and I added a shaped piece of blue camping foam to protect my back from the wind. It works great. It's good to see your brain is always thinking. Keep up the good work. Chow for now.

Just put a couple of extra button holes on the outside of the jacket wherever you can. You when can simply clip a carabiner through the holes wherever you need to carry extra gear securely. Even simply knot a cord to itself and run the cord through the hole. Basically anything you can think of to keep your hands as free as possible at all times to help avoid mechanical injury in the field.

  • @LonC1966

Dave and others, to get very strong but not so expensive rope you can buy “retired” rappelling rope that is still strong enough for hammocks but with very little stretch. The rope is originally rated to at least 6,000 pounds. The best carabiners to buy are climbing carabiners. Rated at 6-7,000 pounds as well. They outlast cheap junk by many years and usually cost around $6 US.

I love so much about how you develop new ideas: Focus on the overall concept (in this case a survival jacket) while at the same time devising as many possible and/or multiple uses for each aspect of your design (lining/hammock/bugnet/bedding) as well as incorporating significant necessary items required for survival (rope, room for food etc). Regarding the liner. If you could cut in a waterproof holes (cover holes with a velcroed flap) in the top two corners. Then take two poles a couple feet longer than the scarf and pass through from the bottom to the top on either side. Support the ends on a couple trees and you’ve got a cot.

Great video Dave and Nick, love the idea of a survival jacket, so amazed at these projects you come up with . Looks like you and Nick are having fun, that’s the most important. I really enjoy these videos, they just brighten up my day. Looking forward to seeing the modifications you make to the survival scarf. As it’s said survival items should have more than one use, you have exceeded that. I think a large pocket on the back of the jacket would be ideal. Pilot survival vest have a large pocket on the back. I think a whole survival suit shirt/ jacket and pants that would be like pocket EDC only options to carry more items. I large backpack pocket on the back of the jacket for the larger items. That survival scarf must be included, what a multi use item. Alan R.

The survival scarf hammock may be able to be fixed by not changing the dimensions at all, but by adding a rod pocket to each side big enough for a long stick on each side strong enough to support your weight by tying off each of the four Paracords to eaçh end of a stick to make more of a supended bed. You could also replace the vest and quilted pants with a woobie with a slit in it that would allow you to wear it as a poncho with the many possibilities that the woobie offers. If anything I said sounds a little confusing I'll be happy to try and explain it better. I love watching your build videos they really get me thinking. God bless and stay safe.

David, I think you should sew the draw string channel at the top and not the bottom. Will make it a lot easier to get in/out of. You may have to shift the mesh down a bit to compensate. Will have to be much wider and about 10’ long for the hammock. This will add weight but comfort over ounces! Love your ideas brother!

Like the idea of the opening at the top, but Perhaps you could have a Velcro at one end and the bungee (or both bungee) tie at the other and have two openings for whatever needs. I would sure hate to have to go to the bathroom and only have one option of getting out.

You're so creative! Adding length and width to the scarf will really work for a hammock setup. Really cool how there are so many uses for the scarf. Adding a pocket on the lower back of the jacket, with the same material, seems like a really good idea. Perhaps that pocket can be attached to the "arms" of the pants somehow.

If you leave it open but reinforce the edges (or use eyelets & velcro) then sew it together with paracord when needed, it could still be used as a tarp.
An 'A' frame of sticks and you have a bush chair. Some long sticks down each side and you have a rescue stretcher (though fitting a couple of burly buddies in the pockets to carry you out might be tricky).. Lots of uses. I think I saw this scarf concept years ago and completely forgot about it. With a jacket, it rounds out the capabilities nicely. Thanks for the video!

I like your survival jacket creation with survival kit storage. That could easily save a person's life. -no exaggeration. A lot of lost hikers and others who perished would be with us today if they had something like that. You did well in adding your own pockets on the jacket back to store large, soft items in a way that is comfortable and doesn't add bulk. I've been carrying trash bags in my back pants pockets. Now I'm thinking of carrying a poncho or tarp in the back of a jacket like that....

I made a Kohansky Scarf a few years ago, but I left a long flap at the top front (over the mesh) to throw over the back to close the opening when inside. The biggest drawback is the tightness and lack of arm-holes, although those could be included as hemmed slits and covered with oversized interior flap patches to close them off, too. Hmm...I may have to go back and work on that!
It can also be used rolled up as a pillow, or stuffed with leaves and grass as a padded "tick" beneath you. It can also be wrapped around your middle under a jacket as extra insulation, or twirled into a makeshift rope to pull someone out of a pit or other climbing emergency. Or, twist it and double it tightly with a rock in the off-hand end to serve as a sort of soft 'club' to fend off aggressive predator. It was fun finding new ways to use it.

If it was wider, longer and had rope hooks at each corner (not exactly at the corners, but a bit more inwards on the back), you could tie it down and prop it up with sticks from the inside or boots or bags or whatever, and have enough room inside to move a little bit. I don't know if these hooks would hurt the design or stay in the way of other uses.

GUMBY GETS LOST IN THE WOODS!😊 I got lost when you were making the hammock.🙄 Well, maybe I got lost earlier when you pulled out all that cordage. I would swap out whatever cordage you didn't need to support a tarp: use the space for a freeze-dried pack of sustaining and interesting food to rehydrate in a pinch. I prefer the two trash bag stretcher bed with that tarp. The bags would fit in the survival jacket. The Gumby suit would be fine in the other uses you demonstrated. I would make a pocket as you suggest...but to carry a wool blanket that could give chin-to-toes insulation in cold weather. Your need for warmth would come at night rather than when you are moving on a trail.

Felix Immler is worth checking out for all things SAK. It occurred to me that you could sew soome molle on the jacket to attach a water-bottle/ cup combo to. Also, if you 3 layered the scarf, you could use it as a browse-bed and still sleep inside it. Keep the great videos coming.

PLUS 1000! on Opal Preston Shirley's comment with the Swiss Alpenflage concept! Also, before the Alpenflage the Swiss had a great M65 type field jacket that I actually liked better! It had a stow away hood, with a fold down bug net!!! If I remember correctly it was stitched to the inside of the front edges of the hood all the way around with an extended tail. Hood up in the rain, the bug net gave you a breathable barrier inside the hood - Bugs get bad - Bug net comes out and down across the face and long enuf to tuck into the front of your shirt or jacket plus OD was good for facial camouflage!!! Don't know why that idea hasn't become standard issue GI for EVERYBODY, EVERYWHERE?!
