How to ruin an elite OL prospect 101: draft your franchise left tackle, immediately start him out of position in order to have marginally better OL play. In year 2, still keep him out of position, and criticize him as he struggles (they’re completely different positions). Eventually, bench him when he can’t play out of position. This is what the Steelers do with all their high potential players- they won’t play them until they’re “better” than the high floor, low ceiling guys they are currently starting. And it drives me absolutely nuts. Player development/personnel in Pittsburgh is horrendous currently.
Since Munch left I can agree before it seemed like we were creating starting caliber OL men yearly Big Al Chuks Kelvin Beachum Matt Fieler shit even Dan Moore hasn’t been terrible but I think since Munch has left the decisions Tomlin is making for the OL is hurting the team
Let's be honest and not hate just to hate. Dan Moore Jr is playing better than he has in his career. Jones has a slight upper body injury. This seems like a win-win situation. We have a starter on the bench if one goes down.

I know Broderick has really been struggling, but I need to see him @ his natural LT position. Some players just struggle with the move and hopefully that’s the case with Broderick. Him and Troy should be a good tackle duo for the next 8-10 years

And question, how did Troy look in the preseason?? He didn’t look good either. But Broderick has proven from last game he is more than okay playing RT and he also proved last season.

Why does everybody turn everything into drama? It’s simple because of injuries and importance of left tackle position this is the best lineup to go with. It’s simple that’s it!
In my, uneducated, opinion, I find it refreshing they are starting the players who have played better in Fautanu and Moore. I prefer that as opposed to starting a player because of where they were drafted or salary in any scenario.
Moore has been CHEEKS for three years but he has one good game against a bum and deserves to start over a first rounder????

Brodrick is a 3 year project, they said after that 3 years he would be better than the 2 LT that were drafted before him. Troy is a day one starter, he already has all the skills and techniques. Troy winning the RT spot was symbolic. Dan can only play LT. Brodrick can play LT & RT, it makes more sense to have him as backup. Next year Brodrick will be the Steelers starting LT.
He's got potential, always has. Nothing better than a 1st rounder with potential to develop.
Listen if Broderick is hurt and Dan Moore keeps balling we can use him as trade bait before the trade deadline. He could be worth some decent value if he keeps up performances like last week.

I think this whole situation is more about the process of getting Broderick back to LT than Troy taking over RT.

Deke, think big picture! You want Fautanu to get some starting snaps against a weaker opponent rather than have him coming in cold near the end of the season. Meanwhile, you're letting Jones heal up some and have him in reserve if there's an injury on either side. Remember, the end of the season is going to be brutal! The more fresh guys we have at the ready for that stretch, the better! Moore is doing well over on the right. No need to rush this, especially against Denver.
I literally said this to all my browns and ravens friends. It’s really not that hard to see this exact point.
We'll have a much better understanding of what the coaching staff was thinking next week. My hope is that they want to give BJ a week off to fully heal, and get a good look at how TF handles the RT spot.

its not a benching. theyre plan was to have troy at right and broderick at left eventually. troy got hurt, dan cant play right, so they had to deviate from the plan. now that troy is healthy they are going back to the original plan. dan moore being serviceable gives them a chance to let broderick heal up a little bit and prepare to play on the left side instead of throwing him to the fire. when hes playing on the left side his injured elbow is on the inside making it more dangerous. dan moore probably wont be servicable much longer so take advantage of the time you have.
I agree the Steelers can look at this and say Jones hasn’t done anything to start over Moore because Moore has been the LT but the caveat to that is Jones has been filling a position the Steelers have needed because they over paid Chuks & didn’t want to deal with that contract & performance. So they slot Jones into RT when he was made a 1st round pick by playing LT then the very next year draft a replacement RT & say to Jones “ You haven’t proven anything to start at LT” IS CRAZY I love my Steelers but man let’s hope & pray Jones starts this weekend cause that’s SHADY
If they are slowing him down for the injury to recover then ok but not having Broderick play is a huge mistake dudes the best tackle in the room by far.
I think it's pretty clear Broderick is still suffering from an elbow injury. Keeping him out there will just prolong the agony. If Troy is ready to go, put him in and give Broderick a few weeks to heal up. Once he's back to full strength, reassess the situation. Ideal world, Broderick bounces back, Dan Moore continues to do well and we can float him as trade bait for a WR2 before the trade deadline.
Go and watch the last 3 games last season (including the playoff game), and watch Broderick get beat like a drum in pass protection at RT. He had no elbow injury. Maybe a switch to the left side will help, but he's not a RT.
They ended last season with Jones at right tackle and Dan Moore Jr at left tackle. Maybe they weren’t pleased with the job that Jones’s did. And they drafted Fautanu more as an upgrade over Jones than as a way to replace Dan Moore.

I like what they're doing, figure out all these variables now while it's early and while we can afford some mistakes that way we know everyone's strengths going down the line
Keep in mind they said that Broderick Jones was a project coming out if college with tremendous upside, which means they're correct. Broderick was not a finished product coming out of college, but Troy Fanatanu was a finished product coming out of college.
The problem is nobody expected Dan Moore to be playing as good as he is.
I'm against it because Jones and Moore were solid last week, for all it's worth PFF ranked Moore 15th at his position last week.
Dan Moore Jr. was very good, Broderick was not. Broderick's PFF grade was horrible (50.8). Dan Moore Jr's was (75.4). Broderick graded out poorly last year as well. He's not a RT.
I wanna see Broderick more at LT. Honestly he hasn't blown me away especially in pass pro.

I didn't judge Broderick on his first one or two games, so neither will I judge Fautanu off his first one or two games. Let Broderick develop at LT which is his comfortable position.

I think this is good for the team. Troy was always supposed to start at RT. Jones is hurt and Moore has played fine so far. They are letting Jones get healthy and from here on out the better LT will start.
Broderick had some nice blocks last game. Even saw a sweet pancacke block on a run to the right. I know he sucked in preseason but i though against atlanta he was our 2nd best lineman
Dan Moore was graded out at 39.7 by PFF for 2023. He ranked 58th or 58 tackles last year. What is the obligation to Moore? That being said, I think Jones is hurt. He didnt seem like he could extend his arm in pre-season.
To me, this is a great problem to have. We have 3 really solid tackles competing for 2 spots right now. O-line depth will be important over the course of this whole season.

They’re starting Troy because maybe they see him as a better fit in this scheme.. Dan Moore hasn’t done nothing bad to lose his job. Was rated high last week on PFF so that tells a lot that he didn’t give up a sack or even a single pressure on Fields
I would guess the idea is to get Jones playing solely left tackle. The more Jones plays right the harder it is for him to shift back to left.
I'm guessing that though Jones played well against the Falcons, the elbow injury may have gotten worse during the game or shortly thereafter. Rather than have him fight through the pain (which is what he was probably already doing anyway), the Steelers didn't want it to be a season-ending thing and have decided to rest him. Also, I don't think it's (necessarily) a sign they have tremendous faith in Fautanu yet, but maybe his injury has healed or healed enough that it's best to make this switch for now. I agree...they drafted these two big guys high in the draft for a reason, and though Moore has done a commendable job, he may be trade bait in the not-too-distant future.

This is why we should have signed a RT in Free Agency!! It would have solved a lot of these problems!! Then drafted a Receiver in the first like Brian Thomas JR or Worthy who by the way both looked great and scored TDs in the season opener!! It seems as though decisions are made behind closed doors that we don't know about and it's based off skill set and what they want to do on the offensive line
Jones is obviously hurt he is the only swing tackle we have so unfortunately he had to play right. This is a good thing for him let him heal and play his natural position.
I really believe this is about Fautanu being their RT. He has been since day one. He run blocks exactly like they want their tackles to block. BJ is in competition with Dan Moore, not Fautanu.
This is one of the reasons I question Omar, seems to me we are not getting the right players! QB, WR, OL at least, I dunno! We’ll see! Here we go!
It's likely that Troy's experience in all the games he's played has given him a faster rise earlier in his career. Jones will be great but it may take him an extra season to be great.
Watching Fanutau in pre season he is a beast in the run game. He not only has great push but will get behind the RB when stood up and push the pile forward which seems obvious but a lot of guys don’t do it all the time. He is always full speed and aggressive and I like that

Brod needs to rest. He's been dealing with a lingering arm injury, and was asked to fill-in at RT because A) He's athletic enough, and B) Because we didn't have another option.
Now that Troy is healthy enough to go, and Dan Moore Jr played really well last week, why WOULDN'T we bench Broderick and play Moore Jr and Fautanu? Our best ability is availability, right? Dan Moore Jr. is serviceable until proven he can't hold up, at which point we'll bring Brod back to the left where he should be. Yes, injury has caused us to mismanage Brod's ability to this point, but he played solid at RT for us last season and does have intangibles that will benefit him going forward. Yinzers need to pump the brakes, because yinz LOVE to throw it all up in the air and say we're screwed, but Tomlin is good and knows what he's doing, contrary to what everyone seems to think.
Broderick is good at run blocking, He needs to work on pass protection. I still feel he should start at his natural position to what he played in college.
This gives Broderick a chance to heal up. Isnt that the theme this year? Wilson not starting because he isn't 100%. Wilson to me is coming across as soft. Broderick? Shut him down for 2 or three weeks so his arm heals. His right arm would take a pounding being on the left from DTs. At RT being against OLBs and smaller DEs was less of an issue. 18 weeks of football and then the playoffs. Thats a long time for big guys in the trenches.

Broderick jones was a “potential” pick and we might’ve reached with that trade up.
At this point idk what the Steelers doing with this oline like wasting picks trading up to sit a player I don’t care how accomplished Dan Moore is play the young players so they can build together
If Broderick got noticed by playing LT and Troy got his playing RT why would you place them on opposite sides. Sometimes you can over think things.
Broderick will be the starter at left tackle before too long, I am not sure how much the elbow injury plays into this. Moore is gone after this year as someone will overpay for his services when he hits free agency. Troy and Broderick will be the tackles and Mason and Spencer will be the guards with Frazier at center. This young talented o-line will allow the Steelers to pay a QB and another stud skill position player in 2025 and beyond!

The Steelers have to see what Fautanu has on the right side. If he's worse than Broderick at RT, the Steelers are in trouble. It certainly not a mistake to give it a try. Broderick was not "pretty good" at RT last season. He graded out poorly, and was especially horrible in pass protection the last few games. He was not good against the Falcons or in pre-season this year.

I don’t know if Broderick wants to be elite , a lot of his tape just looks lazy but hopefully it’s just an injury. His run blocking is pretty elite but his pass blocking is below average

Been saying this, they draft Broderick just to switch his position. Then get Troy . We could have got a second Wr or Cb in the first round.

It is early in the season, and I think two things are at play. Broderick is injured and has struggled. I think because Moore is not flexible position wise, they need to see what the rookie can do, before they move Moore. Moore has been playing well this season. So lets let the drama play out.
Broderick jones is a bust. Everyone swings and misses. Just keep him around for depth but he’s not a star tackle in this league like we hoped. Hopefully Troy can become one
Give Jones a couple weeks to heal and to take reps in practice at LT. Then transition from Moore to Jones... or just wait till someone gets injured because its the NFL and injuries are bound to happen. Jones just hasn't played that great at RT.

Plan was probably to trade Moore after the draft, but didn't get offered enough? The future is Jones at LT and Fautanu at RT. Agree that Jones and Moore should have been a competition from day #1, but the current move is the correct one IMHO. The story will be that Jones is injured and therefore Moore is the starter right now. The expectation is that at some point Jones will be healthy and will beat Moore out for the start.

This is a luxury decision on Broderick. He’s hurt, he’s not playing well, and he’s out of position. Due it to fact that they have Troy, who they are very confident in, and Moore playing well and maybe, just maybe, has flipped the switch, they can take this approach. It’s not startling and it’s a pick any coach would make if they had the luxury of doing so…
Broderick can rest, learn, and grow his ability. I also think the injury is forcing him into bad habits that will continue to propagate if he doesn’t get a chance to reset…

Might be a good idea as jones hasn't proved shit yet if he was so great he would leave dan in the dust yet he doesn't. It will be very telling if jones is on the bench and troys in that right there should tell everyone what the steelers are seeing in jones right or wrong.
