Yeah I actually felt the same about the day-to-day flow and the wind-down from missions. I just wish the missions were bigger in every aspect--larger battlefield, a team of 4-5 heroes, 8 or 10 card hands, more cannon fodder enemies (plowing through a handful of "minions" is always fun), etc. Probably the biggest disappointment for me though was the lack of hero combos... sure they have "combo cards", but they're all just basic "hero 1 takes a couple swings, hero 2 takes a couple swings, hero 1 lands a heavy blow" and always with the generic color flash backgrounds. I mean legit hero combos like in X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance--allow Iron Man to target Captain America with his blast, gain "Forceful" or extra damage doing so, and redirects so the knockback comes from Cap's direction. A "Fastball Special" with a strong hero (Cap Marvel, Hulk, Spidey) throwing Wolverine at an enemy. They missed some golden opportunities.
Something I noticed from the clips in this review: Looks like every battle takes place on a perfectly 2-D game board. The fight is in a city, yet every character and enemy sticks to the flat asphalt. There's a fight in a mansion with staircases and balconies, and every character and enemy stays on the flat tiled floor of one level. I understand that a tactics game might not be able to incorporate a huge difference in heights during battles. But what kind of superhero never even jumps up a flight of stairs, or leaps up to a nearby fire escape? I have no interest in this game. But this video is another wonderful example of why ACG is the best game review operation working today. I don't always completely agree with Karrak. But that's fine! The important part is that ACG gets into detail about specifics and breaks those aspects up into digestible segments: graphics, mechanics, audio, storytelling, etc. The folks at ACG do spectacular work and I applaud them.
No long range vs short range abilities, no height differences, no size scales, no meaningful destruction, no line of sight... This is a card battler with very little beyond the cards.
Firstly I have never played the game only watched developer live streams. I find it difficult to believe the characters all play the same due to combat restrictions @8:40 Spider-Man can't open up portals like Magik can, Iron Man can't use the environment like Spider-Man can, and no hero really benefits from redraws like Ironman. And aren't there cards in the game that mitigate damage, like block and conceal, helping to keep your characters alive, so they don't get wounded so often? Also when you highlight the enemies doesn't it tell you which hero they are going to target so you can plan your turns better, to help mitigate your heroes being wounded? I totally understand that combat is not for you which I respect 👍. "Slay the Spire" for me is an amazing game due to the depth of the card system, and I see similarities in here in Midnight Suns, but it's not for everyone. Still looking forward to the game and checking out the combat for myself. Ultimately I respect your opinion, and love your reviews.
Yep it was very sad. just completely fell apart even with the positives. Also knowing someone is attacking you doesn't stop it from hurting you. If you are out of cards you are out of cards. You don't get to call timsies sadly
I’m unexpectedly addicted to this, entranced. (Playing on PC) I feel the story is going for a Saturday morning cartoon vibe. Banter with and befriend anyone at base. Train with a hero of your choice to get stronger, then go out to fight bad guys, it’s the superhero game I’ve always wanted. Don’t worry about cards, you can make cards at base, they’ll come out randomly during battle though. This game is tailor made for COMIC fans. Not just, “Oh, I like the MCU” If you enjoy reading comics at home, you’ll understand it’s tone and why they talk the way they do. They sound grandiose, like you would imagine a hero in a book would. If you grew up on comics and cartoons like I did, this game will make you smile. I wish it were a bit; No, a lot more X-men focused, because it’s structured like one. I guess that the price to pay for Disney to give the green light.
Was super excited about this game and saw a review posted on ign so I came here to see if ACG posted and got even more excited....till the first 30 seconds of this video and then was sad by the loss of potential. Thank you ACG again for your honesty and awesome review
It's sad because they could've done some really epic stuff with this premise. It didn't even need to be Marvel affiliated, shows like invincible and the boys is the perfect inspiration, especially when your flagship IP is Xcom. Give us REAL consequences, Gore that befits a world of super strength, speed, powers, etc. fun engaging turn-based combat, give us some heroes, a big threat, and lots of customization and it would've been a 10/10 banger.
Bought this on a deep sale, $25 legendary edition. The gameplay is so addicting, imagine if they didn’t consider this a failure and the second one was less relationship sim and more variations, enemies and hero’s. I’m sold, unfortunately that’s a dead dream now. Fireaxis was onto something here, too bad we won’t be able to see what it can really become.
Honestly, hearing you talk about the problems of the missions and all, sounds alot like Xcom issues which have not been adress and fixed, despite those issues i still love the gameplay of that, (when there are not bugging, in the case of Chimera Squad) might find someone to borrow the game for play test before deciding if buying. Anyways, thanks for your honest review, really love it :)
Appreciate the honesty. You highlighted all my concerns about the game, despite being a longtime Firaxis fan. The studio has become noticeably greedier over the years, and the obsession with gameplay hrs over quality of time spent seems to be related to how they measure success internally. The recent livestreams also showcased a very bro culture within the studio, compared with a more inclusive one in Santa Monica. It’s no wonder they can miss the mark with their audience.
Haven't dappled in card drawing orientated games but they interest me enough where I'd be willing to try one. This could have been the game for me but it's a shame that it's in such a shambles, might get it in a few years from now on sale if I can be bothered. Thanks for the review!
Appreciate the review, one piece for feedback, you pros an cons list you show on the screen, get a black outline for the text, makes it easier to read across anything in the background.
ACG got this wrong unfortunately. After playing for 50+ hours this is a brilliant game. The small locations are a feature not a bug. No hard feelings but to each their own. You guys should play for yourself and find out not just go with ACG opinion.
Well, you just saved me $99.99. Thanks ACG! Haha, I'll wait for a deep, deep sale. This is one of those weird products, man. It could have been a competent 3rd person action adventure game with an eclectic group of heroes to choose from, and that would have been fun... but that's not what we're getting here. Instead, we're getting an isometric card-based thing that looks like a port of a mobile phone game. Just a bizarre use of the intellectual property.
So glad I watched this one. I was debating between this and calisto on Friday. Guess I'll wait and see if I'm getting anything at all! Might check this out on sale instead.
You briefly make the connection, but out of curiosity, do you play board games? I think some of your criticisms sounds like aspects of card games. Simple loop, luck, rigid strategies, etc. I’m really curious to see what some of the board game reviewers I watch would think
Just beat the game. As someone who is not into tactical games, I’m so glad I did not listen to this review. This game has been such an addicting surprise. Really hope people give it more of a chance
I usually agree with Keurig, but he got it completely wrong on this review. This is one of the best tactical strategy games I have ever played and I’ve been playing them since the PS1 days. It has breathed new life in the strategy RPG genre and if you are a fan of those types of games, you are doing yourself a massive disservice by not playing this game.
Bummer, the simplistic battlegrounds were probably my biggest worry, and was hoping they expanded in size and complexity as the game went on. It seemed very limiting watching the live streams from the team, but thought it may have been only showing early missions.
By this point, anything Marvel pretty much gets an instant pass for me. I'll make exceptions for Spiderman and Wolverine some times, but I am waaaay over Marvel by this point.
I appreciate the warning, but I feel the need to see this through given the 1,000+ hours I put into their last game. Any idea if they're including Steam Workshop support? Keep up the good work.
@@Barro1 Yeah, and from the looks of it, with the narrative focus and all, I am thinking it would be hard to shoehorn in new characters. I would love to see people workshopping the rest of the x-men or more obscure heroes.
To be honest, the most shocking part for me is tht this is *not* a mobile game; when I first saw an ad for this on YT, from fake euphoria to crad-based gameplay and the graphics I expected this to just another Shadow Legends...
I am not surprised Firaxis are one of those Devs who put games out in my experience and don't patch problems. The xcom games in and of themselves are good, but they are let down massively by bugs etc.
Xcom have graphics bugs but never a game breaking bugs, played that game for how many hours now and the only bug I can remember is the Soldier foot bug.
The one time Im gonna do a 180 frlm your opinion. Love the grind its been fun, building teams getting new cards having a personaesque cycle spending time with heroes. Its got heart
Thanks for the review! Saved me money on this one! I love board games and I am a sucker for XCOM turn based strategy games. When I first saw this announced I was excited until I started to get more reviews and news about the game. I so wanted this to be good because I love marvel characters plus turn based gameplay but seems like so many games now are these shallow live service model games only designed to get more money instead of actually making a great game to start with.
I'm not a big fan of these superhero games but my brother is. Needless to say, I'm gonna show him your review so he can have a heads up before he buys it. Thanks a bunch!!
So many missed opportunities with characters. You can replace Iron Man with Doom, put in Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Morbius (memes aside,) Pixie, Nightcrawler, Scarlet Witch, Elsa Bloodstone etc. There's a ton of characters who fit into the supernatural/magic elements better than Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Spiderman and Captain America (among others.)
Ouch. I was super excited about this when it was announced, thinking it was a Marvel skin of XCOM. Then we learned it had a card mechanic, no cover system, and all my hype fizzled. What a bummer. If it was literally a Marvel skin of XCOM, I'd have bought it day 1.
its unfortunate to hear that you overall didnt like this game. im not going to argue with you as many of your negatives are unfortunately accurate (the amount of bugs and glitches alone is frustrating enough) but as someone who has spent 100+ hours and is currently on new game+, i regret nothing and this is $40 well spent. the fact that firaxis purposely made this game NOT to be exactly like xcom is part of the reason why im still playing this. if i had to worry about stuff like distance, movement, cover, constant map exploration, permanent death, and missing attacks even having 99.9% accuracy, i would have quit this game within the first hour. tip to everyone: do NOT buy this game at full price. wait for a sale and make sure its the legendary edition so you have all of the dlc and premium skins.
People who immediately get turned off by Card based gameplay are some closed minded idiots. Imagine never experiencing Slay the Spire because you refuse to even try it.
Another great review. Thanks ACG! It’s almost as if at the very early stages of development they planned for this whole game to be just a mobile game. Probably what they should have stuck with haha
I'm not surprised by the general consensus of this game, Firaxis is amazing at making strategy games but awful at characterization. Even having the license to use some of the most famous comic characters can't change that.
Coming back to this review after playing the game for over 10 hours to say your take on this game is terrible. Literally none of the complaints you have are issues for me at all. The battles are super fun and diverse. The size of the arena is irrelevant. It's like complaining about the size of a board-game board. It's big enough for the job, which is all that matters. The writing is not bad at all. The social options are a bit boring sometimes, but hey, it's super easy to skip anything you don't like. The core of this game is fantastic, and it runs super well on PS5 with almost no load times or noticeable frame drops. The story is great, and the characters are much closer to the comics than their MCU counterparts. Even the MC has a fully fleshed out personality instead of being a blank slate. If you enjoyed Fireaxis' past games or are a huge marvel fan, then this is a must buy honestly. If you're a turn-based junkie like me then you probably already have this game. Honestly, it pissed me off how mainstream reviewers write off a game just because it isnt a super spectacle along the lines of GoD or Elden Ring.
As a fan of Slay the Spire, X-com, and the Midnight Sons Comic run, this is my dream game. Already have the legendary edition ordered. You not liking the level design is a fair criticism, but I never enjoyed XCOM for the level design. I'm all about what can be done tactically, nor do I mind a grind in leveling up my deck over time, as in Slay, you unlocked stuff incrementally based on how far you progressed on a run. Still really excited.
Very interesting how people can have different opinions. Some other reviewers I've watched are really stoked for this and love it good to see different perspectives. I hope others do the same though and don't just go by what 1 person says whether it's good or bad. Currently sitting at 83 on metacritic which is pretty good
Fantastic game. its a slow build. Now I am crafting and upgrading cards. Editing my heroes decks. Love the strategy this forces you to use smartly to survive. Combat is almost like a puzzle game. Loved it.
I was planning to buy the game, when weeks before the release date they were pushing the deadpool DLC. dat was a major red flag for me, so seeing this review i'm glad i waited.
I was more excited by the promo cartoons they had for a number of characters, and I would be really interested if Marvel ever wanted to make a series of Midnight Suns (sans Hunter).
I'm sad that this is such a drag, I'm happy that I save the money... Was looking forward to another game in the Marvel universe... I've got a feeling this was original a mobile title that got too big for mobile, then made the console/PC transition without the actual effort to make it a good console/PC game...
I really really appreciate your reviews because you explain all of your criticism with precision and well given examples. I won't buy this immediately but maybe in a month or two to try it out.

As huge fan of xcom EW, WotC, and Chimera Squad, I’m used to all of these issues. I was hoping fireaxis would fix these things by launch and I’m a bit disappointed, but that said, this is still a day 1 pick up for me. Turn based strategy is my favorite genre and fireaxis makes some of the funnest systems out there. Card based games are really fun and not entire random. Building a good deck is all about risk management and that can be very satisfying. In any case, we don’t need more 3rd person action games. Just go play GoW Ragnarok or Elden Ring.
The card game part was almost a deal breaker for me. Nothing breaks immersion than losing a fight due to unlucky card draw. But I could've got past that if they got the X-com part right. And this sounds like they get that all wrong. Movement and small areas, WTF?
Especially on current systems, it makes no sense. Even Mario & Rabbids that came out on the switch this year had huge arena and really cool movement, you could move anywhere you wanted within an area. It’s as if this gamer attempted to be that, but with cards… which is super boring to me.
i was planning on getting this sometime in the first week or so, but yikes. Waiting for sale looks a lot more promising. Thanks for being so thorough on the parts that you liked and didn't liked.

@@ACGreviews depends if you have a blocking skill You won't take damage or if you stop that guy from attacking you won't take damage.
It says "A Team Idea, B Team Result" right in the title. It's an overpriced phone game that somehow made it onto consoles.
Fireaxis was onto something here, too bad we won’t be able to see what it can really become.
and its gonna be free in a week on the epic games store
Karak, heart this comment if we should be concerned about Callisto. 😇
I just can't get over how the character low-key looks like Drake lol. Love the content always!
I can't remember the last time ACG tore into a game. He's usually pretty forgiving. This must be truly awful.
Slay The Spire would be my recommendation as an intro to card games.
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 Didn't see this comment, thanks I'll definitely give it a look! :)
100% agreed. The character deck building and gameplay are solid!
Agree. It’s got definite issues, and it has a definite AA game feel, but mechanically the game is so fun.
Cashing that Firaxis paycheck?
There are so many better games on sale on the PS store right now
You briefly make the connection, but out of curiosity, do you play board games?
I think some of your criticisms sounds like aspects of card games. Simple loop, luck, rigid strategies, etc.
I’m really curious to see what some of the board game reviewers I watch would think
Just beat the game. As someone who is not into tactical games, I’m so glad I did not listen to this review. This game has been such an addicting surprise. Really hope people give it more of a chance
I had a sinking feeling about this game and now I'm just sad. But thanks for saving me the cash. Only game reviewer I trust.
I’m waiting for a mod to skip and take out all of the talking lol
Agree
Bummer, the simplistic battlegrounds were probably my biggest worry, and was hoping they expanded in size and complexity as the game went on. It seemed very limiting watching the live streams from the team, but thought it may have been only showing early missions.
Appreciate the in depth review. Still looking forward to playing the game for myself.
Obliviate should be used in modern English - it is such a cool sounding word. It makes for a fascinating alternative to obliterate.
THIS is a review, this is how games should be reviewed all the time. I wish I could subscribe again. Great stuff mate.
Imo very unlikely, since it’s Disney.
@@Barro1 Yeah, and from the looks of it, with the narrative focus and all, I am thinking it would be hard to shoehorn in new characters. I would love to see people workshopping the rest of the x-men or more obscure heroes.
Disney and Marvel are all about cutting production costs these days and it shows clearly in how this game looks and sounds.
As much as I respect ACG's reviews, most people have reviewed this higher. He may just not be as into this style of game as you or I might be.
@Richard Vye Both Xcom 1 and 2 were bug laden not to mention they have left other games unfinished and unfixed and have moved onto other titles.
@Richard Vye 😂😂😂😂 there's always one like you
Xcom have graphics bugs but never a game breaking bugs, played that game for how many hours now and the only bug I can remember is the Soldier foot bug.
13:39 I cant unsee it, Tony looks like Phil Dunphy with a moustache
Was torn between this and Callisto Protocol. Definitely going Callisto.
Hi, do you know if I can replay history missions in the late game to get 3 stars?
Why they didn't make the playing fields different rather than just constant re-skins or even add some elevation is beyond me.
Because… the games trash
Yeah they were far too safe and clearly didn't know how to add verticality to the card combat
Outside of ps4's Spiderman and that Guardians of the Galaxy game, Marvel can't seem to get developers to make good games lately.
Seems like a very cool idea that they intended to make a mobile game with
The one time Im gonna do a 180 frlm your opinion.
I actually enjoyed the game a lot , maybe because I am a casual gamer that likes marvel movies and card games such as slay the spire.
The Wesley Snipes inspired Blade might be too strong for me to resist buying this…
Great review, thanks for sharing!
Maybe a modder is out working on a full conversion of X-Com 2 to make a Freedom Force 3.
I'm not a big fan of these superhero games but my brother is. Needless to say, I'm gonna show him your review so he can have a heads up before he buys it. Thanks a bunch!!
Thanks ACG. Taking this off thr wishlist.
honestly than spider-man, i wish they had daredevil
also dr doom would’ve been cool as well
So many missed opportunities with characters.
Think its worth picking up a physical copy at 20 bucks?
only if it has all of the dlc on it
Thanks for the detailed review ACG.
Cash that Firaxis paycheck?
Wait how long? Have post launch updates fixed any of the issues mentioned here?
As a fan of Slay the Spire, X-com, and the Midnight Sons Comic run, this is my dream game. Already have the legendary edition ordered. You not liking the level design is a fair criticism, but I never enjoyed XCOM for the level design. I'm all about what can be done tactically, nor do I mind a grind in leveling up my deck over time, as in Slay, you unlocked stuff incrementally based on how far you progressed on a run. Still really excited.
Glad I saw your review before I bought. I was skeptical and the reviewers confirmed it for me.

Loved it.
Good god. Your character's outfit got more horrendous with each iteration XD
Thanks for the review, as always!

BOOM got one right. I was hoping it was that
I'm sad that this is such a drag, I'm happy that I save the money...
You can add sharpening thru the Nvidia control panel.
Was really excited for this, sad to hear it does not hold up like I wanted it to as a marvel xcom like game

Whoa watching the last two minutes of this video shows uncommented gameplay, cutscenes, and voice acting. In the end, I have the impression, Midnight Suns is intended to be released on mobile platforms and/or tablets. I was pretty dissapointed not getting an XCom3 from Firaxis. Now I'm personally pissed off, that Firaxis wasted years of ressources for... THAT?!?!
Great character mustache, unfortunately I pre-ordered the legendary edition of this before watching this... Thanks for the honest review as always. Watched the developers talking about how great it's supposed to be and one lady was excited about the representation and mental health issues of the characters and I somehow knew THAT'S where the focus probably was!!!

Imagine if X-Com had a card based combat system 😂
Do you have a review for The Callisto Protocol in the works?
Probably but I think they aren't allowing reviews until release date
The card game part was almost a deal breaker for me. Nothing breaks immersion than losing a fight due to unlucky card draw.
But I could've got past that if they got the X-com part right. And this sounds like they get that all wrong. Movement and small areas, WTF?
Especially on current systems, it makes no sense. Even Mario & Rabbids that came out on the switch this year had huge arena and really cool movement, you could move anywhere you wanted within an area. It’s as if this gamer attempted to be that, but with cards… which is super boring to me.
I heard the cards was a way of introducing random setups. Did that not help
I was concerned about this game from the get go.
i was planning on getting this sometime in the first week or so, but yikes. Waiting for sale looks a lot more promising. Thanks for being so thorough on the parts that you liked and didn't liked.
Great review I don’t know what I would do without you guys 😅it still looks kinda cool so I’ll wait until this is on sale
What a sheep
I have to say....I'm glad this game is not great. This is not what most Marvel fans REALLY want, we want an action adventure game that brings the stories to life..
