- Coastal Exploring - Rockpooling, Fossil Hunting and Beach-combing in Whitby in North Yorkshire. Visiting my ancestral home I take you for a walk around the local coastline and to where I began my passion for marine life and the shore. A lot of people have been asking where it all started for me... Here it is.
I grew up in Whitby area. My grandad was known for walking with his dogs as he had a distinctive walk - his name was Alec. He carved jet, Whitby always reminds me of him, I watch your channel often as it reminds me of my childhood and your voice is a lot like my uncle’s.
- It is a wonderful area, I wonder if I ever knew your uncle. I know a few people who own jet shops. I am glad you are enjoying the channel and that we can walk you down memory lane. ;)
channels like this is the reason why i still go on youtube
Bobby Lee - Thank you very much Bobby. 😊🎣🦀🌿
You're the man when it comes to coastal walks and foraging thanks John.
- Thank you very much, I am glad you think so. We are simply sharing what we love doing. :)
Agree
When you buried the cockle. Aww my heart was so lightened. Thank you for caring as much as me. I always move worms and keep a packet of sugar in my bag for hungry bees
- It is how I feel we should all be. I am glad the message transferred across in the video. It is something that we are also teaching our children, never take more than you need and always treat the natural world with respect ad appreciation. :)
The earth is an amazing museum of the past. It's incredible what you can find just walking on the shore
val eerie - There are some truly incredible areas of the coastline in this area. It really puts our own existence into perspective.
You're compassion, love and care for your environment is an example mate. Love the videos. Thank you.
- Thank you Alfie, we are simply sharing what we know and love doing. Take care mate. :)
Loved watching your videos ! All of them . I am in my 60's and live in the States (Ohio ) but I grew up in California. I miss the West Coast and always spent my time at the Beach, Tide pooling, Fossil hunting . I use to take my Children on hunting Adventures. They are now all grown up. But its still a passion of mine. To hunt along the Coast .I have been Hunting in Mexico , California and Oregon. Amazing things you'll find on the Beach . Thank you for bringing it alive for me again !
Lorie P. - Lorie it honestly makes me so happy to hear that. I am thrilled that we are able to share our passions with like minded people all over the world such as yourself. Have a fantastic weekend and all the best. 😊
Whitby is a lovely town. Interesting history. My Mom owned a necklace made of jet. Your videos are so informative. Greetings from New York.
debra bolton - It is a wonderful place to visit, such a rich history and IMO surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. Hey jewellery is lovely isn’t it. Small world.haha. Have a great day Debra and all the best. 😊🎣🦀🌿
40 years ago I visited Whitby and had the best fish and chips (haddock) I have ever tasted before or since. You bring back great memories, thanks.
- It is without question, the home of good fish and chips. I could do a video on the fish and chips alone. :)
Sacrilege ! it has to be cod 😂,best fish and. Chips in the world ,although cafe 1 in Inverness does cod in tempura batter with a mild curry sauce . Posh fish and chips excellent !
Very interesting & informative video John. I actually called my wife in to watch because she used to visit Whitby from Middlesbrough where she grew up before her mom, who had lost two husbands, decided to migrate to Australia with her 4 girls, 2 from each husband. I met her, married her & that was 59 years ago. It brought back some pleasant memories for her so we both thank you for this trip down memory lane for her. As I said, very educational walk along the shore. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
That is wonderful. She may have even met members of my family back then.
thankyou, I love rockpooling and just looking what's on the shore. living on an island on the west coast there is so much to see. I'm now disabled and struggle with mobility so watching your videos at least keeps me in touch with what an amazing place we live, thankyou, thankyou thankyou
Dawn k - I am so glad that you can join us on the shore and that you are finding our videos pod viewing. Best wishes Dawn and have a great weekend. 😊💙
Oh wow! I love history and was fascinated by the Abbey and fossils. Thank you so much!
Twyla Johnson - I am so glad that you enjoyed our video. This was a bit of an experiment to see if people would enjoy this type of video. 😊👍🏻
The Fish Locker I LOVED IT! If I can’t ever travel there, I appreciate someone showing me things I would never get to see otherwise.
Thank you for sharing. It is absolutely beautiful!
A Link - It is my pleasure. I am glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
I lived in Whitby for four years before I moved to the usa. Bram Stoker stayed in the hotel I worked at while he wrote Dracula. This brought back a lot of memories. My favourite video yet. Thank you!
- It is a lovely place to visit isn't it. :)
I'm an American who loves history, thanks for the commentary. Nothing better than fishing and history. Love your videos.👍 I love England's long history, you guys do a wonderful job of documenting it.
- Thank you very much Grady, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. This was a new type of genre for us. I hope folks enjoy it. :)
Thank you for showing us your territories. I love the sound of the waves, the sound of the water, the little animals of the past and the present. It seems almost magical, and for this impression I have to thank your passion.
What a nice walk!
- Thank you Mary, it is my pleasure to share these things with you :)
Another great video. What a beautiful place you grew up in. The coastline reminds me of the coast around the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia where my mother's side of the family is. The cliffs there and the rocky beach areas are very similar, and you can get caught at the bottom of the cliffs by the incoming tide. Beware! Two girls who grew up near where my aunts and uncles live were forced to climb the cliffs near Margaret's Bay and found a hole in the cliff filled with amethyst. Thanks for the video
- Thank you Elizabeth. As always it is my pleasure. :D I have to confess that one time as a kid I did get stuck by the tide and did the same thing. Climbed up onto a bit of the lower cliff and waited the 6 hours for it to go back down again. haha.
Thank you. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
Simone de B. - It is my pleasure Simone. Simply sharing what we love doing. People had asked me many time’s how my passion for the shore began, so I thought this would be a good way to share it. 😊
Surely a smart TV exec can see the potential for a fascinating and educational TV series here.
John makes outstanding videos, with a bare minimum of equipment. I for one would love to see his films on mainstream TV.
- Thank you Dougie, being able to share our videos with so many people would be incredible, but I don't know wether they would restrict our creativity. Right now we do what we enjoy and only what we chose. Who knows? :D
This is better than tv.. We actually learn things here👍👍😊
- I am glad that you think so Helle. We are simply sharing what we know and love doing. :)
I couldn't click on this video fast enough when I saw the Abbey! I went to Whitby on my first trip to England. I loved it! I climbed those steps and had the best fish and chips of my life there. My friends said that fish had been swimming in the sea about thirty minutes before we enjoyed it. I also came back with a jet necklace. Great memories. Some of these days, maybe I will make it back!
That is so wonderful. It is a small world isn't it. Depending on when you visited I may have been living there. 😊
John: "Go back under there."
Crab: *Does not go back under there*
Jarred Juett - F*%# YOU FISHLOCKER!!🦀 I go where I want!! 😆
@@TheFishLocker 😅
Love it!!!!! There was a tiny star by the brittle star you showed us! I love them so much! I went to Mexico years ago and played in the tidal pools for hours pulling interesting sea life out. I could do that all day! Thanks for all your amazing knowledge!
- It is my pleasure Elisabeth I am glad you enjoyed the video. The tiny brittle stars are far too fragile for my fat fingers Im afraid. I put the big one back. Best wishes and I hope you enjoy the rest of the content. :)
From the past few weeks I always look forward to see if you upload a new video. This video is absolutely great! You are not just an amazing fisherman, you are also a man of knowledge and I am grateful you share all this to your viewers specially the place where you grow up and where your passion all started.
LiZie Kim - Thank you Lizzie and I am very pleased I am able to share these things with you. Best wishes to you and your family and have a great weekend. 😊👍🏻💙
Because of your beautiful and interesting videos I've decided to put the Yorkshire coast as a place to vacation in the future. It's so beautiful and interesting.
- I truly love North Yorkshire. In the summer time it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. :)
Your videos are brilliant, you have a deep knowledge of nature not just marine, botanical, geology, weather...the list goes on! But it’s your clarity of explanation that pulls it all together. I love the coast, spend a lot of time there, both sides of the family are from fishing villages. Keep up the great work, respect from Ireland 👍
- Thank you Dara, I hope that it is the depth of knowledge and understanding that sets our channel apart from those who try to copy what we do. Best wishes and welcome to our channel. 😊
Can't remember when I last enjoyed 33 minutes of the BBC as much as this upload, stunning scenery and good, informative commentary 👍
- Thank you very much it is my pleasure. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Best wishes and have a good one. ;)
Reminds me when I went to Whitby and Scarborough as a ten year old:-) :-)
That was great John I really enjoyed it, thanks a lot:-) :-)
- Im glad you enjoyed it mate, it is a lovely place and so many people have such happy memories from there. :)
Fantastic video bud, 99% of youngsters today wouldn't be able to answer any questions on these small creatures, you've done a brilliant video, the new Mr Attenborough maybe
Keep passing this knowledge on.
Stephen Geoghegan - Doughty. - Thank you very much Stephen, hopefully these videos go some way to encouraging folks and young ones to get out and explore the natural world around them. 😊👍🏻🐚🦀🐟
Can't imagine how beautiful it would be to grow up in such a place.
It surely is a wonderful place. 😊
Never realized there was so much life under a rock! Enjoyed the video!
Motorcycle Mikel - You would be amazed. We have done a few rockpooling videos and I always find it absolutely fascinating. So so much life on our shores. 😊🦀🐚🐟🌿
"All that life under 1 rock" indeed john. I dunno what your day to day job is but you would be a fantastic educator for school kids to inform and make them appreciate what we have around us. This video brought me right back to my childhood turning rocks and not knowing what we would discover, but that was part of the fun. Really enjoyed this one! 👏👏👏
Dave O'Donovan - I know what you mean Dave. It was that wonder and curiosity that captured my interest as a kid. If my school teachers could hear you suggest me as an educator they would wet themselves laughing 😂
What a good video! That is a beautiful place.
- It really is a wonderful part of the world. :)
Very informative! I love the sea and I love history as well. I’m so happy I found your YT channel.
- Well I am glad you found us as well. Happy watching. :)
I remember my mother asking for directions to Whitley bay and getting directions for Whitby. lol We got there eventually! ...The joys of the Scottish accent.
I live 5 minutes from whitley bay :D
- Haha. Funnily enough several times folks have asked me where IM from and they are like "Ahh Whitely Bay" no Whitby.lol.
This was a fascinating walk. I could listen to you talk all day long. Thanks for sharing :)
Sue Zoo - Sue, it is my absolute pleasure. I am glad you enjoyed joining me on my walk on the coast. 😊
so informative and beautiful... thank you, best wishes to you and family
- Thank you Joe, it is our pleasure. Best wishes to you and yours and have great weekend. :)
Great video thank you...and a great subtle dig in the ribs that the average yank will have missed completely....🤣🤣🤣fascinating...loved it
Paul Evans - Whatever do you mean? 😏 Glad you enjoyed the video Paul. 😉👍🏻
Wow, that tidbit about Bram Stoker having written Dracula there is incredible!! Dracula is one of my favorite books! Always interesting to see where authors get their inspiration from
omegasage - There have been some cracking books written here. Robin Jarvis wrote some good ones 😉
Your knowledge is outstanding and you have a lovely way of explaining things ,I enjoy every video you make!
- Thank you Alan, as I keep saying - we are simply sharing what we know and love doing. Best wishes to you and your family mate and stay safe. :)
Thanks for taking the time to take us along John, such beautiful coastlines you have in the UK. I like how all the flat stones are wearing into each other, in some parts it looks like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle.
- It is my pleasure. We have some stunning areas of coastline here in the UK. Hopefully as the weather improves we will be able to do more of these videos. :)
Forgive me if someone’s said already and I missed it but re: the red periwinkle if you only see them once in a great while I’d guess it’s a mutation in melanin production, in other animals a- or hypo- melanism leaves the creature in shades of red or orange so the red winkle would fit.
theYeti - That is a great theory. I had assumed it was some form of genetic mutation but was unsure as to what type. 👍🏻🐚
Love seeing Whitby, and the abbey is glorious! Love history and all the “old stuff”.
Its a wonderful place to visit isn't it. 😊
Beautiful to see, my family came to U.S.A. on a ship years ago. My dna is 99.9 % Eastern European. I have never seen any of that country, always wanted to. Now to old and in a wheelchair. So glad to see what you show us. Love the videos. I think I have watched everyone of them. God Bless, be safe
Well Brenda I am very pleased to be able to share our videos with you. 😊👍🏻💙
awesome, great to see you post again... have a great weekend
- Haven't missed a weekly upload in over 70 weeks Joe. ;)
@@TheFishLocker oh my apologies i just started subscribing... such great content, thank you sir, lovely family
Great video. What a great place to have grown up and developed such a passion and knowledge of the ocean. Being from the United States my mind is always blown when I hear how old some of the structures are in Europe. My house is 160 years old and that's about as old as they get for my area.
- I love history, it is so fascinating isn't it. I did really enjoy growing up where I did, but the problem with small towns is they often create small minds. It is better to move away and see the world after childhood. ;)
WOW!!! Now I have another destination on the list
- Whitby is a stunning place to visit. 😊
Thanks for this video , makes me homesick as brought up in marske in the 80s and have fond memories of days down to Whitby and crabbing at saltburn , really enjoy you're boat fishing vids as well best ones I have seen ,
- Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Take care mate.
John I love geology, and we have a cement ship in the USA,it’s at the tip of cape may it’s also a sunken ship,we can see part of it now but wen I was younger a lot more of it was out of the water.but those fossils are fascinating thanks for showing us all of these wanderful things😊☮️
It is my pleasure Ed. 😊
Thanks for this and all your videos. You and your family are just lovely people, your boy and his digger are a charm. I am from Canada and my Dad lived in Nova Scotia on the Bay of Fundy side. When visiting I always loved to walk out and see all the life, that in a few hours would be under water once again. Your videos make me remember this time in my own life and that just makes me smile. Thank you.
- It is our pleasure Jackie and welcome to our channel. I am lad that our videos can take you back to that happy time. Best wishes and have a nice day. :D
I absolutely love this video. I found this video very interesting. Thank you fish Locker. I hope one day to visit your beautiful country
The proud American - That is wonderful to hear. If you do make it over, give us a message and we can maybe recommend a few places to visit. 😊👍🏻
These videos are so calming watching you have a an amazing walk is so fun and when you find some cute little animals and you are very knowledgeable about most watery eco systems
- I am so glad that we can share these things with everyone. Best wishes and take care. :)
Perfect video John, thank you once again.
- Thank you Robin. It is my pleasure. 😊
I knew it Lad, took me back some sixty years and some that video. Found my first fossil on a school trip to Whitby when I was 8. When I first saw your video's, I thought he's not from around there. I thought north of Whitby, maybe Redcar, accent had me wondering. Anyway Lad love the video's especially when your out with the young beach comber and Mrs Fish locker. Love that coastline from Hull to Seahouses, fish and chips and Kippers too, nice seafood to nibble on while walking along the sea front. When we get rid of this Covid-19 I'll be over to Yorkshire from Canada for family and friends, Coast and country-side. Watch out for Christopher Lees spirit up by the Abby
- That sounds like a plan mate. Good luck with your travels and best wishes to the family. 😊
applejack120 Seahorses not sea houses lol
@@Julia.Taunton-Clark99 i think he meant seahouses little fishing village in Northumberland 👍
Thank you. Very interesting.
- It is my pleasure Michael. :)
Great video again buddy, a great history of your home. Very similar to the coastline where I grew up, full of fossils and a myriad of species under the rocks. Thanks a million again for posting.
- It is my pleasure. Best wishes and take it easy. ;)
Very very interesting. What a charming place. How fortunate you were to grow up there. I was a block from the St. Lawrence but one could not go to comb. It was very fast and held the city's human waste - not now thankfully. Cheers.
- That doesnt sound too much fun.
Brilliant video as usual very interesting about Bram Stoker and Dracula and rest of video great to watch learned a lot 👍
Adrian Tolson - Thank you very much Adrian, I am glad you enjoyed the video mate. All the best and have a great weekend. 😊👍🏻
Cheers john I'm over in whitehaven cumbria you should do one over here sometime maybe 😁
Adrian Tolson - Do you watch Earl? He’s over your way.
I'll have a look 👍
Your elaborate storytelling is just amazing, I could listen to you talk about sea animals and organisms for ages, very therapeutic!
- Thank you very much for the compliment. I am glad that you are enjoying our content. Take care and stay safe Frigit ;)
thanks for taking us home John. When I was back in Scotland a few years ago I also took the time to revisit where my passion for fishing started and was glad to see to a couple of young lads fishing where I did +45 years ago.......memories of a lifetime :)
Malcolm Bennett - The funniest thing when I went for this walk. Is I bumped into my great uncle on the scaur looking for jet. He’s in his 80’s and I hadn’t seen him for 15 years. These type of places just take hold of your soul dont they.
Thankyou so much for this film. Heading to Whitby in Easter. The fishing will probably be slow, but I can now amaze the kids with my rockpooling knowledge 👍
- It is my pleasure mate. Be sure to wrap up warm it was blooming cold when I was there. ;)
Brill good the fella know a lot keep it going fella very educational program

Kev Fletcher - I am glad you enjoyed joining me mate. Lots of folks have been asking me where it all began. I thought this would be good way to share the journey. 😊👍🏻
Superb video. Inspirational in its own way. A clear explanation of why even small wild and natural places are important in their own right. Whole worlds under a rock.
I am glad that the message transfers through in the video. 😊
Your videos are great everything I love to do when I come to the coast I’m just lacking a beach cook up hopefully soon
- Thats great to hear Chris, I could have had a winkle cookup but this was only a passing through visit so I didn't bring the stove. Summer time maybe ;)

Na'el DG - Thank you very much and god bless. 😊
Whitby is such a beautiful part of the Yorkshire coastline. Thanks for covering the differences between sea coal and jet - I'll be able to put that knowledge to good use the next time we go to Whitby now. This is only about the third of your videos I've seen so far but I'm going to subscribe so I can watch more because they are fascinating!
Jean Proctor - Welcome to our channel Jean. I am glad you found the information about jet/coal useful. Whitby is a lovely place to visit. I hope you enjoy the rest of our videos and take care. 😊
So beautiful John.
I'd give my right foot to live there.

All my life, I've probably used the expression "jet black" hundreds of times, and never wondered where it came from. Very cool.
- Every day is a school day. ;) I am glad that you enjoy the videos Mariah, take care and stay safe. ;)
I've lived in this area and known of jet all my life and I still never made the correlation. Thanks for pointing out something so obvious! I wonder how many other phrases we use frequently without realising the origin?!
Absolutely fascinating 😊 thankyou for another lovely video 🐚🐚🐚
Roxie Morrell - It is my pleasure Roxie. I’m glad you enjoyed walking with me along my old playing grounds. 😊
I always love checking out the tide pools in any area I manage to travel to. Watching your videos has helped scratch that itch during these indoor winter months!
Mike Norton - I share that with you. Every time I go anywhere on holiday or something I am drawn to the coast or the wild areas. 😉👍🏻

I really enjoying watching your foraging videos and learning about the diversity of tidal species there! I'm pretty sure you can conduct a lecture course on it with your wealth of knowledge! Your tidbit about fossils and coastal geology is super neat! Highlight was you IDing Jet versus Sea Coal (didn't know that exists!)
- We are simply sharing what we know and love with people. It is my belief that we should all share more. If we all shared what we know, we would all know an awful lot more. :D
You're in my neck of the woods! Hope you enjoyed your time back up north x
- It was a lovely little visit. Weather was fine but cold and saw who I needed to see. Had a nice walk on the shore and was back home again before the Cornish fish had even realised I had left :P
Very interesting. I like the relaxed yet informative way you introduce us to the land/seascape and its creatures. I will be watching more of your videos.
2btpatch - Thank you and welcome to our channel. I hope you enjoy the rest of our content and if you have any questions, just leave me a comment. 😊🎣🐚🦀
