  • More than 8 million people in Britain are living in unsafe, unsuitable and unaffordable housing. We need to tackle this together. My Commission on Housing, Church and Community will set out ways that churches, governments and others can end the housing crisis. Together we can make sure no one faces the injustice of poor housing.

Exactly right, Your Grace, and thank you. Christians cannot look with indifference or passivity at the plight of people who have nowhere to be. This is particularly striking in lands with harsh climates, of which of course the British Isles are an example. Much of the year, it is impossible to be comfortably out of doors for more than a few hours. Yet the phenomenon of rough sleepers -- of people living out of camper vans or even smaller vehicles, or tents, or sheltering as best they can in dank doorways -- is a shocking indictment of collective failure to live up to the most urgent teachings of our Lord. Thank you for seeing your way to address this immense need. Children and vulnerable individuals, people suffering from disabilities, must be prioritised. Of course it will be a long journey, very demanding and labour-intensive. For that very reason, it cannot be put off. Praying with you and for you all.
