After the final stage of the Tour of Missouri, I just walked through the team parking lot and shopped for a new bike. Ended up with Canadian Cam Evans’ Kuota TT bike from Team Ouch. Later traded it for a cello. I also bought Scott Fortner’s Trek 5500 from Saturn in 94 after talking with their mechanic at the old Downers Grove race.
After Motorola folded, they paid off the mechanics with bike stuff. They came around Midwest races, and hawked product. I bought some tub race wheels from the guy that didn't have any wear on them. All of them had Motorola stickers on them. He was also selling a few "Team" frames.
I had a friend that use to sell her old toenail clippings. I'm sure there is a market for your old bike bibs, especially if you haven't washed them after your last use.
I like Phil a lot. Only know him from this channel but he comes across as very bright and charismatic. This is very fresh content that super interesting.
I am ancient enough to remember a young Christian Vande Velde selling a set of wheels on the Rec/Bicycle/For Sale on the Usenet forum. He was probably a promising young junior back then.
I have a 2012 Pinarello that has become my “rain bike.” I have ridden this carbon-frame beauty HARD over the years, and over-maintained it as well. It still rides like a brand new bike.
My old Diamondback road bike says P. Gaimon on the fork tube. Thought about chatting you up about it at the Glen last year, but there were miles to be ridden and I rolled right past.
Thanks Phil. I recall back in the days of the Coors Classic Stage race I saw for sale several clothing items that were “used” from Andy Hampsten and Davis Phinney and other big name riders of the late 1980’s. I wondered how the vendor got his hands on all the gear. Have a great 2024.
I bought a used training bike from a guy on a LiveStrong developmental team maybe 13 years ago. All top level specs and it was great to have and was actually kept up very nicely and a good price too.
Gotta have that "special hookup", the team manager. Buy all my bikes from a pro team, save myself about 60-70% - as well as getting my hands on the newest and best stuff. Used frame/Used grouppo - new cassettes, rotors, pads, tape, tires and chains. What's not to love? KARMA BABY - I did this guy some solids when he was a kid riding his mtb at a "national" level.
I may have seen somebody angrily rally a Bissell Pinarello road bike through the local mountain bike trails before returning to Bissell, after an unhappy season (not making 45k, either)
wow this was actually really interesting , so i need to hang around the team bus with some cash in hand at the end of the season and go looking for the mechanic...
My life goal is to own another pit bull, and an old one at that! My last pitty was black with the sweetest white hairs coming in on her face. I love that every single pit bull has the exact same personality: cuddly, whiny, grumpy, silly, needs a blanket, endlessly affectionate
It’s funny Emily got Nala as a tiny pup and always thought she was a pit. Liked her so much we adopted Creature from Angel City pits. Got Nala tested and she’s mastiff and bulldog. No pit whatsoever
I own a pro bike with a legitimate race win. Though technically, just the frame now. I stripped the parts for a different frame after a year. Got a pretty good deal for it from Pinkbike, and used social media to contact the actual pro seller to verify it was real 😂
Question on top: Who looks after your training bike as a pro when let‘s say your gears are off or your brakes need a bleed? Will you fix it yourself? Can you call up a team mechanic to visit you? Do you just pass by the service course on your next long ride?
You fix it yourself, or take it to a local bike shop. I'm sure if you needed a new and more expensive part like a crank set the team would send you it, but some things you would probably replace yourself. You might even get it for free from LBS cause they want to build that relationship with a pro rider or you already have it cause you grew up there....
Not many pro bikes would fit me.. Then Coner Dunn. I kept emailing. His pro teams and hitting them up on twitter if his bikes was ever available. I would love to have one…My stable. Has no. Ex pro bike in it..
Phil, could you make a vid about your amateur and pro career? I only ask because I have no clue what you’re talking about when you reference the embarrassment in this vid. I’m curious about the behind the curtain of the pro peloton.
I left that all in a book and would rather not bring myself into it again. Draft Animals is the best thing I've ever done if you enjoy any of my content
I'm not sure you can really call $2,000 a year "salary." That's maaaybe coffee money for the year. and we're talking McDonald's coffee. None of that high falootin' Starbucks stuff.
They had us racing 60-70 days a year. No one I had know had a day job. Maybe in the offseason. Most of it was mom and dad, generous strangers, and side hustles like coaching
Hey Phil! Do you happen to know if invisiFRAME is planning on making a specific frame protection kit for Factor bikes? Or is the universal kit good enough? Im looking to get a Factor Ostro Vam and would love to get it wrapped.
@flattrack33 if you are getting a universal kit you might want to save some money and just get "helicopter" tape, or at least use that to practice with. It took me a good week to do a full suspension MTB, but I was being a perfectionist with invis!!!

I'm just as bad on it as I was the bike. @@worstretirementever

and here I am just throwing my toenail clippings away like a sucker

Now that is oldschool, Usenet buy and sell!

That was a fun video! I've always wanted pro used kit and now I know it's possible to get my hands on someday.

A guy from my local ride rode for USPS and Telecom.a bunch of guys on the ride we're riding his old bikes and wearing his old kits.

Cool video. Interesting to hear about that stuff. I can't blame pro's for selling stuff when the salaries are so low.
Good fun honest take on things. Keep them coming!
The "new" guy in the video is awesome
Excelent video Phil!
Thank you!
Not the point at all but your Weiss watch is the bit of kit I envy the most and it isn't close.
haha good eye!

Lol man your humor is spot on.
Wasn’t that how The Pro’s Closet started?

This is something I'd like to know tii
Phil didn't know disc brakes existed back then

I vote that Phil names backward helmet guy “Lance”. I bet Lance could not even get a KOM up a speed bump
Im hoping yo see you at one of your GFondos, and have you sign my Jukebox speed suit.🥰
Well you know I’ll be there!
Hi! Huge fan here! Do you wanna come out to Baltimore for a beautiful charity ride in July? It's a century on July 21st
Well legion of Los Angeles been selling their bike frames on eBay and offer up
If they weren't ex-pro bikes, just merely second-hand bikes, how much cheaper would they cost (identical spec)?
Not many pro bikes would fit me.. Then Coner Dunn. I kept emailing. His pro teams and hitting them up on twitter if his bikes was ever available. I would love to have one…My stable. Has no. Ex pro bike in it..
Can I have one of your dogs? Great video, Phil!
♥ the Nala content!
Can I get a signed jersey from the shop? Not sure if you did UK delivery
Youve done an MTB race... When do we get to see a gravel race?

2019 is not long ago, Phil. I commute on a mid-'80s steel Bianchi every day. You won't be riding your plastic Factor in 2059
Hey Phil! Do you happen to know if invisiFRAME is planning on making a specific frame protection kit for Factor bikes? Or is the universal kit good enough? Im looking to get a Factor Ostro Vam and would love to get it wrapped.
The universal kit is plenty. You’ll have a couple gaps in places that it doesn’t matter and you won’t see it

Can I have your bike?
