Gonna say this here so future people can see it: catching a Pokémon directly side-on, perpendicular, is worth a perfect direction score, as well as head-on. That's why his Torterra picture scored so well, it was almost 90 degrees turned to the side.

Well, it is easy to see that the rule of 3rds is mostly unsuited to animal photos and body shots where the subject reacts to and stares directly into the camera. In those cases the best way is to make it front and center. Most of your Pokémon Snap photos will be along this line anyway, a body shot and with the Pokémon almost directly staring into the camera. Just think that they are modeling for you. :)
I've found that hitting the "-" button and letting the professor pick the photos helps with getting higher score shots when you're not sure which one is the better photo. It also seems to grab the star photos that you don't have yet to fill out your photodex or picks the best placed photo. I don't always like the picture that it picks, but they tend to grab the one that gets the highest score.

I've had an "Other Pokemon" score of up to 600, it depends on how many and what those other pokemon are doing (pose), and their size, position, placement and direction (think of it like a mini scoring system to add on to your existing one). The most important aspect for scoring, in my experience with other pokemon, is by far pose however. You'll likely get a much higher score (in this sub-category) having two pokemon in the shot doing a special pose than 5 of them with the main pokemon doing the pose and others doing nothing.

two things I've noticed so far: you can make the evaluation go by faster if you hold the A button, and when you take a picture, it will have a green border if it will be a higher score than the last picture you took or if you haven't taken a picture like this one yet

I think Austin mentioned it in a later video (the desert one), but for Pokemon with monocular vision, that is with eyes on the sides of their heads, being to their side usually counts as the "face", hence why the torterra shot had a higher direction score when it was further from the normal front.

Absolutely wonderful video, and couldn't agree more about this being a game that is better experienced for yourself. Though I could have sworn that the Park - Night area only had 2 levels to it, not 3? Oh and I noticed that you had a 300+ point "other pokemon" score with one of your pictures, so it is possible to get over 200!

I had tried letting them auto select the photos to send to the professor but I noticed that its only beneficial if you're looking for the highest stars and its not guaranteed to give you the highest points.
12:38 "Direction" could be based on the direction the pokémon's eyes are facing? Torterra's eyes are on the side of its head, therefore it looks to the side. The new picture has the eye almost facing you, but the old one is facing to your right.
I haven't watched the video, but I'm going to thumbs up regardless. I'm part of the young adult crew that loved the original and is now excited about this new version, so I want to figure it all out for myself before I watch anything. I feel direction is not only when the Poke is facing you but also affected by when you took the picture. As you approach the pokemon is more points than when youre leaving it behind.
i love the vid. the only thing that im confused on is size. i have literally taken a photo of hippowdon that just had an extremely close up of its head and almost zero of its body. and i somehow got diamond star on it. granted it was only a 1 star pic but still.

There is a simple reason why your second Torterra was better. Some Pokémon, especially those with a poor excuse for a head like Torterra give better points if you shoot them in profile instead of from the front. Mostly happens with very big or long Pokémon with small heads, whose body have a lot going on.
A tip for people (like me) who don’t play with motion controls, if you use the left stick for the pointer, that will give you precise slow aiming, but using both the left AND right stick at the same time makes the camera move SO much faster. Just figured it out and it’s made turning to see things way easier. I don’t know if others knew this but it was helpful for me 🤗
This game is STUNNING. And when I tell you I SHRIEKED when I heard VOICE ACTING in it.....Like....y'all.....IMAGINE that scene in SwSh with Leon and Rose but with VOICE ACTING. GameFreak just.....you're RIGHT there man RIGHT at the edge.

The highest Other Pokemon score I've gotten is a little over 500, I think it can be pretty beneficial but for only for very specific shots. But I agree in that it's not really a big deal overall

That same strategy can be used with the motion controls too. So you have a 3rd input

Learn to use half zoom shots which is when you shoot when you're in mid transition of zooming in to get perfect sizes.
