What a great variety of things to do in February, you guys! It’s almost mind-boggling all the things that you have deadlines to do before time to plant again! I’d be frustrated with it all, but you have to be admired for taking it all in stride! Good job! Net your travels were fun, Greg!

You guys need to check out Sonne Farms if you ever get time! They recently got some Arrowquip Guardian hay saver rings! The couple of times I have seen them in action on their posts you just don’t see barley any waste on the ground around the rings! How much is a 4x5 or a 4x6 Alfalfa bale worth these days?If you can save 15% of every bale think that would add up in an operation like you guys have?Likely pay for the rings over a period of time!

Just curious as to why you feed to 8 weight in today’s market. Local sale here today low to mid 7 weight was bringing same dollars per head as 8 weights. Doesn’t make sense to me

      Where are you from?
Tons of people in central KS buy small groups or ranch packages of 400-600 lb calves and “background” them up to 800-900 lbs. It’s a quick turnaround and a good way to sell feed. The spread varies depending on the time of year but we have lots of buyers for 8 wt feeders here.

      I’m in South Dakota.
I agree with buying light calves and selling feed by feeding.
Sold load 842 lbs steers and load of 722 lb steers.
      Bring within $17 per head.
All home raised so same cattle. Seen consignment after consignment do the same all day.

Even some higher 6 weight was within $40 per head of my 7-8 weight. I know we can’t put on 150-200 lbs for $20-50.

People bid up 6 wts around here for grass , but they are paying for condition. Our 800 lb steers have gained more than their COG and we bought them right at lower weights. Ranchers selling home raised hay fed calves can get a premium but our silage backgrounded cattle would not get that premium being sold at 720 lbs.
