- CC is available if you can’t decipher my mumbling.
Let's discuss this magical girl JRPG and the cheesiness that comes with it.
music:
▶️ Blue Reflection OST - (Main theme) Blue Reflection
▶️ Blue Reflection OST - Sugu soba no kanata
▶️ Blue Reflection OST - Nagi no hayasa de
For anyone interested in video games with a magical girl theme, I highly recommend Gravity Rush 1 and 2. The story and atmosphere is basically a mash-up of Sailor Moon and Kiki's Delivery Service but in a steampunk society with a darker, French-inspired aesthetic? The lead designer worked on the original Silent Hill and the Siren series :)
"I even enjoy magical girl shows at.. 22"
Wow. Do I ever feel old now.
"I still enjoy Magical Girls even at 22"
(cut to my 30yo gay ass living for this game)
Mahou Shoujo is FOREVER girl, buckle up!
Fucking same lmao
29 here, and more of a magical girl than I've ever been before
Thanks for unarchive your vids I miss them so much
I'm a simple person. I see Sophie release a video, I click fast. Even if it's a game I know nothing about.

preach
I come here for her soothing voice but I know sooner or later, I will play these games

I haven't played it, but I appreciate the delicateness of the reflectors' design. it's a breath of fresh air and it seems less out of place, like if they were still connected to their human self and that they are fighting for themselves as well as others.
I remember seeing this game and being interested in it's artstyle but couldn't decide if it was worth buying over that alone, so this review is quite fortuitous for me
This game's visuals and visual aesthetic look amazing. I love how it's almost photorealistic but with anime characters
I was browsing the psn store a few minutes ago and i randomly saw this game being in my (Just for you) tab. It catched my eye so i checked it out for a bit. I go to youtube and i see this video in my sub box...
Lol
Andrew you're delusional dammit!
This kind of stuff happens to me all the time. Right now I keep seeing the word 'myriad'. Ever since I played Dragons Crown.
This is pretty crazy. Stuff like this in general creeps me out and happens all the time.
Thats data. Its what everyone is scrambling about as what andrew yang said its the oil of the 20th century.
I first ran into this game on a store shelf.
Was vaguely intrigued by it.
I later ran into it again during a Steam sale.
Bought it during the next one.
Despite its bad combat system, I am somehow enjoying the thing.
Always so surprising with the videos you make. It's always a breath of fresh air to see you post something.
Thank you so much for this review, it definitely helped me decide if this game is for me or not :)
Been anticipating this game since its first gameplay trailer and it did not disappoint. Despite its shortcomings it was a joy to go through. The first boss and its new mechanics caught me off guard and got me real hype. A+ review.
“with the power of the ring"
am I the only one whose immediately reaction is hear Sauron's voice in my mind saying "THE ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL!!"
This game is like a combination of Sailor Moon and Persona. Interesting. And great vid VA. I always enjoy your content.
As someone who gawks over the menu/presentation designs, I can wholeheartedly agree that Blue Reflection's UI and Main Menu are one of the simplest yet effective ones I've seen in a game so far.
It's almost like that of a hypothetical smartphone UI of the near to far future.
Getting BRS flashbacks
ME TOO!
Finally a good Black Rock Shooter game!
I was totally thinking that this has a feeling of BRS inspiration while Valkyrie was explaining the premise. Especially since the MC's regular appearance kind of looks like Mato with out her little twin tails, and the presence of a special blue eye in her magical form. Honestly speaking, I'm perfectly okay with this, although it does make me wish they'd make a new... anything for the series, or do something with the Innocent Souls manga.
Vazazell, that's arguable, but it's kind of just an old PSP game at this point, and while the gameplay looks... decent, it seems limited to a shoot, slash, dodge, system and I can understand someone not being totally enthused about such a game design. Personally, I would want one that played almost like Nier, being a hack and slash with special range attacks and abilities, with a little bit of potential exploration, be it open world or level based, but that's just me. It does look kinda fun though, and if a port popped up on PSN for like between 5 and 10 dollars, I'd almost certainly get it, but... I just don't see that happening.
Max Chen God damn we all need more black rock shooter in our lives
I love your channel, I started to like Drakengard 3 because of you, do not stop making videos like this thanks ^^
The real cure for the leg injury is the friends we made along the way
I can't stop thinking about this after 4:51
Just saw Blue Reflection on steam and remembered that i first saw about the game on this channel.
RIP ValkyrieAurora ;-;
Have you tried the Ar Tonelico series that was also made by Gust? It's easily my favorite series from them.
goober2049 Isn't that the one where the girls strip to power up the team 😯
She says she has in the very beginning of the video. Its one of the reason she played Blue Reflection.
Unknownost no, she mentions Atelier, not Ar Tonelico.
I have a friend who keeps telling me to play that game. I guess I should
Arisa nah, that's Ar Tonelico 3 which is... the worst of all of the EXA PICO games.
Personally I love this game, but then again I'm super bias. I JUST WANNA BE A MAGICAL GIRL, DAMMIT!
Don't we all? Well I don't wanna be a magical girl I wanna be more of an anime character in an an anime school where a lot of drama happens.
contract?
This game low key creeps me the F out with the aesthetics alone.... It's too doll-like that even watching my roommate play it makes me feel uneasy. Then again, that's most Gust games in my eyes so can't fault the game for what it is.
One thing I can't argue about though... the bloody soundtrack in this game just blew my expectation by miles. Like, sweet baby Buddha the soundtrack in this game is straight fire.
This came to me when you were talking about the magical girls changing hair color. If you like magical girls and you haven't seen it yet, you should give Flip Flappers a try. I think it has some of the best art in anime recently.
ive never heard of any of this but she has such a "Lore Friendly" and "Immersive" voice makes me want tp give it a try
Based off of what I’ve seen in this video, I feel like you may 🐝 able to appreciate Persona 5. Have you ever considered giving it a shot? It’s personally one of my favs and its similarity to this game has my curiosity piqued and I’ll definitely get around to giving Blue Reflection a shot
I wholeheartedly agree
Sooooooooooo, Blue Reflection is Persona 4, but with magical girls
Yep it even has some psychology themes and a friendship-is-magic theme!
@@user-garnet just about every JRPG has a friendship is magic theme
Sometimes I wonder if Blue Reflection woulda performed better if it was less of a pared down Persona and more of an improved XCom.
I‘m 22 as well and still enjoy magical girls! Would love to hear you talk some more about the genre, not only in regards with video games but maybe anime too?
Finally I get to live out my fantasy of living in a yuri doujin
I really like this art style. Framerate issues with Lime probably has to do with the hair which seems to be a lot of translucent layers, correspondingly requiring much more processing power, if unoptimized. The UI is modernism par excellence!

You - "thank you..."
Me - "oh, you're w..."
You - "..So much for watching."
XD
I really enjoyed your review, but when you were talking about the music I was hoping that you would provide some samples for us to draw some reference to what you are talking about.
You provided a lot of great visual samples for the gameplay aspects, so it would be nice for future reviews if you took similar care when dedicating a significant amount of time to talking about the sound design or music.
i actually bought this game last month and I'm doing a slow burn playthrough of it. I bought a physical copy and found out Physical copies in America are slightly hard to get. I found my copy in a Gamestop listed in Texas and I live in Ohio so i got screwed on the shipping. But overall my time with this game is satisfying so far, the characters have a simple but complex depth to them that makes me genuinely interested in learning about them. The battle system is a turn based system which is one of my favs in JRPGS and most of all it's PRETTY! The lighting in this game is amazing to me especially when you see it shine through a window or look at the sunset, i honestly hope someone got a raise for that. The soundtrack does a great job at giving the atmospheres of battle, everyday life and the common. I think my favorite parts in this game so far have to be the boss fights! All of the dungeon crawling and relationships you make with the other girls feel like their culminating to where you can kick some major butt in the boss fights. The fact that the NPCS participate in boss battles were a MAJOR plus for me personally showing even non magical girls can help! So far I am so glad I was finally able to get this game and I hope to finish it soon! And it's my hope Gust makes more MGJRPGs! And last thing for me Lime is my favorite and one of the best characters in the game for me so far.
This looks like the type of JRPG I have been looking for! Thanks for the review!
I still remember last year I nabbed the game during golden week sale on Ps Store, I played a little bit the game, and then suddenly I ended up uploading a playthrough in my channel as I played the game, I enjoyed it a lot (and at a very convenient time for me, as my personal situation was kinda similar to Hinako's), and also... my God... the OST is awesome.
What do you think about the sequel?
I got this game a couple of months ago for about 300kr/30£ and I really liked it. The framerate issues were a bit distracting and getting every friend to max friendship while also doing every sidequest definitely got a bit "grindy" but I liked all the girls and their stories and I loved the music, especially the battle theme and the music piece that plays before the final battle. That got me good.
Now, if only any of the PS4 atelier games could go down in price a bit so I could buy them.
no ones talks about how clean the UI is?
Really good video!
As a fellow Gust fan I've had my eyes on the game for a while but decided to wait. I think I'll pick it up now that it's on sale.
I’ve never been so excited to see a new video in my subscription box.
Have you played “Nights of Azure”?
Soooophieeee! ❤️
I‘m waiting since a lifetime till Blue Reflection Disc-version finally is at sale 😃
I love the Blue Reflection Ray Anime and the Blue Reflection games. This series can use all the love and support it can get. It's a very beautiful. And really cute series that everyone needs to get into. It's basically Final Fantasy mixed with Persona and Sailor Moon. And it does very well for what it goes for. Blue Reflection has beautiful animation, cute characters, beautiful music, epic boss battles, great storyline. Overall it's a series that anyone and everyone who is an Anime fan or not needs to get into it. It's really good. It deserves all the love and support that it can get.
I know nothing about you besides your content but I love you and I appreciate your existence
I recommend playing one of Gust's older Atelier series game "Mana Khemia - The Alchemist of Al Revis" and "Mana Khemia 2 - The Fall of Alchemy "
Even with different title, it's considered to be an Atelier game but with an alchemy school setting.
They have the best story and setting in the franchise and the last main series Atelier game to have 2D sprites
(The character animations are waaaay better than anything in the Mysterious Trilogy)
Kishida Mel's art is just adorable
You have sold me on this game I’ll definitely get it after i get yakuza 0
i know it's a good game and all , but i kind of don't wanna start it when i see the "put the control input here" in a launcher. that's like the biggest "IM A SHITTY PC PORT" flag a jrpg game can give you and i actually wanna enjoy games from this company.
EDIT: so i finished the game:
-story is kinda OK but nothing too incredible coming from gust
-gameplay is good with the bunch of changes you can make with the fragments on every skill , i could throw down every stat on the enemy and fully raise my stats in 2 turns whenever a battle starts.
The bad thing is:
-you don't level up killing monster , you level by talking to people in school
-max lvl 50 / max stats 30
-does not matter if you put all def in a chara , another with def 1 will get stats close to the tank chara you made (wich makes no sense actually)
-everything revolves around fragments (items you attach to your skills to raise everything ) , you kill monsters to get items and improve the fragments up to +3. So stats or lvl don't matter much.
-battles are so easy that you can win the game without dying once and normal battles without letting the enemy fight.
Got the treasure box edition on Vita, then got it on PC. It's not the best but definitely one great addition to my gentleman collection.
Wow never heard about this game, it looks great! I hope it's affordable for the winter sale, because price is a little steep.
Huh. I'm imagining a crossover with Persona 5, which ends the moment that Joker appears on a rooftop to taunt the enemies, due to Sailor Moon's lawyers tackling everybody.
you've really been showing your inner weeb lately...
i love it.
Nice review. If you liked Atelier series, and Blue Reflection, I strongly recommend the Ar tonelico Series. The first and second games are for PS2, Ar tonelico III (QOGA) and Ar noSurge are for PS3.
I love the Gust games too. I played all Ateliers released in english, but my favorite series still Ar tonelico (my first Gust game was Ar tonelico II).
It's great to see this game get a review! It could use a bit more attention.
Have you played or do you plan to play To the Moon and Finding Paradise? Would love to know your feelings about these two every emotional games.
Also, keep on the good works!
Not interested in the game but damn you are right that is a clean UI. The shapes make it look futuristic without actually seeming complex to deal with and the color scheme only adds to it.
Not sure why I watched the whole video honestly. "Too easy" is enough reason for me to pass on an a game. Guess I just like listening to you talk about stuff.
Hey, Valk, have ever ehard of Ar Tonelico and Ar Nosurge?
I beleive these games are right up your alley, God tier ost
the games are about song magic and the song mages that use it, its a really interesting series
you always say "cc is available if you dont understand my mumbling", and its true that sometimes I have dificulties understanding some words but that is because im not 100% bilingual and english is not my native tongue, I dont think you mumble at all, in fact I find your speaking pretty clear and soothing, even if I dont care about the video/game/whatever the topic is.
Anyway since the video of your mom playing Nier, she is the reason I follow this channel.
jk
This sounds like Persona with magical girls. I'm sold.
Thanks for the recommendation to wait. I enjoy JRPGs and this will be added to my wishlist on steam.
Alright every game you talk about is one I've extreamly loved. And this seems up my ally. I'll check it out.
Yes! One of my favourite game! ❤️
I got the Japanese version of this game on the PS Vita, because the Vita version was only ever released in Japan.
Loved it even if I had to go online for Game FAQs for the walkthrough.
That part in the middle where you have to go to these 4 different dungeons to find these 2 random things, I kinda stopped playing it because it was annoying not knowing what to find with this random enemy that seems to only appear and I can only assume even with english translation for the PS4 versions, it will still be a random search.
I made up the story in my playthrough in Japanese from things I understand from what was going on, I enjoy it just annoyed that there was a road block for me half way through the game.
Also, I have no problems with the fanservice moments, I love the bathing scenes and enjoyed getting the Japanese version of the game on the PS Vita as I knew I wanted to get the original version without any censorship.
This also means, I see the awesome moments during the raining scenes.
Menu was awesome I agree, playing this game in the Japanese version everything relies on the menu being easy to know without reading any Japanese language, English text or symbols easy to understand helps with the language barrier.
This all sounds very appealing........can't imagine why. *sits surrounded by Persona games, and merch.*
I know its late, but just bought the game, gonna enjoy it..
Oh yas i agree with the awkward dialogue animation. I wish they can just go back to 2D picture in dialogues. It also happen in Atelier lulua , even though they started to remove the 2D art on dialogues from Atelier Ayesha and still happen till Atelier Lydie and Suelle, they dont seem to be as stiff as Atelier Lulua and Blue Reflection (i dont' know why)
I’ve always wanted a current gen magical girls game! It looks so good. Would be fun as a sailor moon mod :)
Oh! Oh! Sophie play nights of azure! It's also made by the people that made this. It's a very touching and heartbreaking game about a female demon and this girl that has to sacrifice herself so the world doesn't end, but the two are in love.
FYI there's some Blue Reflection DLC in Atelier Lydie and Suelle : Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings.
Played the game. Was great. Don't regret it.
9/10.
The ost for this game is pretty great as well. Might pick up the game this Friday.
Is it weird that i'm a 24 year old boy who likes Magical Girl animes, i love Sailor Moon and Puella Magi Madoka Magica to this day (also i'm getting Persona vibes from this, Persona with a Magical Girl twist, i can take a little less depth with the social interactions, sounds interesting, might get it while its on deal on PSN)
Well, I would like to pick this up but the price for new is going north of $70 right now. Second biggest con deterring me is that you pointed it out as being rather easy. Might buy it used if it I can get a good deal on it. Btw, your voice is super hot.
The thing that strikes me the most about this game that, while playing myself, just grips me and keeps me going is the *music* and the *slick af interface*.
Why don’t more anime games have atmospheric music like this? The only game that checks the slick interface box is probably P5, but I was constantly allured by the menu design in this game.
Still though, I can’t say enough how the music in this game just makes me wanna leave the game on without even playing it.
This one has been on my wish list for a while. It gave me an "Omega Quintet" sort of vibe (A game that I didn't like), so I've been waiting for it to get in the $10-$15 range. Your review has improved my perception of it a bit.
I wonder what you think about the Nights of Azure games. They're the only games from Gust that I haven't liked so far (although I only played the first one). I'm into good writing and believable stories (within the story's universe), and Nights of Azure just didn't have that.
This was a very weird way to find this channel. Lol. UA-cam search brought me to a wrong Magical girl rpg review but I ain't complaining.
Also, hurray for Atelier Lydie & Suelle's Blue Reflection DLC
Im in love with Gust since i played the Mana Khemia games so i will give this a try.
this game looks interesting i will check it out at some point for sure
New to the channel. Great video. I’ll be getting this game later on for a decent price.
I bought it and played it. Problem was I couldn't finish it. I played Persona 5. Beat it three times...I was spoiled by Persona because Blue Reflection felt like a slower paced version of it. As for difficulty I agree that it feels too easy and I was playing on hard. I may go back to it some day.
Yuzu... and Lime...?
How... Citrus-y.
So BRS mixed with Persona and Sailor Moon...m'kay. That's gonna be a buy from me. Not paying for that season pass tho. Don't need the extra costumes.
Also the fanservice. Tecmo helped with this. It's what they're known for. Didn't even know they had a hand in this until you brought up the fanservice. Then I was like, "Tecmo was in this, weren't they?" I was right. X D
The character models look pretty good. Like a playable anime.
I just ran into this video and fell in love with the idea of the game! Recent subscriber too! As a huge fan of Atelier rpgs and Sailor Moon, would this be right for me??
this game actually looks pretty serious.. at least compared to the often comedic Atelier games (^^)
Feels like the persona 5 lady version
Really doesn't, it was a boring mess, completely different from the persona games
Sometimes I wonder if the game would be any better received if it was a turn-based tactics game where initiative and suppression are core mechanics.
Great video as always. not gonna lie i kinda want to pick it up for myself now
Only reason I even know about this game is because of the sweet soundtrack. Probably the top reason I find new games to play actually. Buuut not gonna lie, would be a bit awkward playing this around other people. ...Not that that's much of a factor, since I mostly play games on PC. Game still seems interesting, though.
Also I'm getting a bit of a Chrono Cross vibe from this for some reason. Not sure why. Maybe it's the battle system?
If you want a Namco recommendation, I think it would be cool if you tried out Baten Kaitos Origins. It has an incredible soundtrack for a decade old GCN game, and has a unique battle system centered around cards.
I got this game for christmas last year, and although I enjoyed it... I would say it is better in short bursts. the amount of side quests with the girls and being the only way to level up can become very tedious very quickly.
This game remember Persona in some aspects... Nice video; did you tried Danganrompa?
Grill get one free wish after being forced into magical grill? I smell Madoka again, hope it's have some plot twist
Note that Puellae Magi are paid upfront while Reflectors are only paid after killing the designated target.
Yup, the game is very easy overall, on hard mode there are some times that it can give you a run for your money, but if you do almost every sub-quest in the game, even hard mode is not enough for a challenging experience (I usually ended up overleveled against almost all bosses in the game, the only thing I missed to do during my 1st playthrough... but because I have a save I can pretty much do it when I feel in the mood... is the final sub-quest... that involves fighting a super boss).
Have you tried the Nights of Azure games? I have second thoughts in getting the game
Xeno Yuki I have both games, one and two. Nothing I would run out and buy maybe buy it if it goes half off psn store
So this is basically Persona ft. Moe magical girls? I mean, I can practically see the same type of activities, even the phone/chat application of P5
Bring me into that world please.
It looks like a beautiful game. I can tell by the footage that the frame rate is indeed janky.
I didnt get the feeling the narrator is shy. In fact I feel being "shy" or awkward is like a cool thing now, where people consider themselves so just because they arent times 100% comfortable 100% of the time. Everyone is like that...
Make more videos like this. I'd love to know hidden gems.
I like the artstyle
PS4 MASTER RACE!!!
