A buddy of mine and I were hiking behind our old highschool where there was a bunch of undeveloped land. The sun was setting and we were both high I was busy looking down out the ground for whatever reason when my buddy stopped me. I looked up and I saw a bihggggg ass rattler in the middle of the trail must've been 6-7ft long. We must have been 12 ft away from it and when it spotted us it rattled super loud and was cocked back ready to strike. We sprinted all the way back to my car in the opposite direction. My car was a good half a mile away. We made it back safe but needless to say that experience sobered us up for good.

Maybe it evolved that particular rattle sound because animals find that particular sound alarming for whatever reason. If they made a pleasant sound it might encourage a large animal to get closer and investigate, which isn't what they want.

He shook the tail so hard and fast it thrashed against the fence he was near. Kinda odd for them to be out this time of year.

It’s not a threat though, it’s the rattlesnake telling you to leave it alone and that if you get closer to it it’ll bite, it's a warning, they want to be left alone, if you continue to act like a predator they'll start rattling more intensely, if you reach in or step on them they bite in defense.
Backing away slowly will make the rattlesnake not perceive you as an active threat

If you just run you take a risk of running right into it and getting attacked by the snake. You also want to move slowly away from so you don’t startle it. You still might be onto something though. The sound a rattlesnake makes is quite alarming. Maybe it evolved that particular rattle sound because animals find that particular sound alarming for whatever reason. If they made a pleasant sound it might encourage a large animal to get closer and investigate, which isn't what they want.
