What you are talking about is the Marine Corps Security Force Regiment, specifically the FAST companies. Normally the DSS (Diplomatic Security Service) is the provider for embassy safety. The FAST companies would strengthen the presence in the embassy, if tensions are building.

It's an entire MOS, with specialized training in guard duty, tactics, and pretty much every small arm weapon system in existence. The MCSFR is an anti-terrorist unit, not a guard unit. If an Embassy is in danger, Marine Guards can NOT engage unless fired on DIRECTLY, and back-up comes from any Special Forces teams nearby.
