I am extremely honored and pleased to know that so many viewers from a new generation are being introduced to this historic music and great artists from the first 3 decades of the Twentieth Century. Hope you will take the time to review Victrolaman's other video efforts which cover a wide and interesting range of Musical Entertainment genres from the 1890's thru the 1930's. Victrolaman
I was 8 years old when this was uploaded, I'm the generation after the ones you are refering too, and I love this era of music. I have a collection of probably 100 or more records dating from 1906 to 1928-ish and I love listening to them. I first started getting into old music from my love of technology, cause I watched an Eddie cantor phonofilm from 1923, and then I started watching more of him, then I came across Al Jolson from watching an episode of the ed wynn show from 1949 where he was mentioned, I decided to look him up and was hooked immediately. A few years later I started collecting old records and then got this POS portable phonograph from the early 30s that barely worked, and that started my record collecting hobby. I now own a 1917 Victrola, but sadly the motor broke 2 years ago, eventually I'll buy a refurbished motor, as it's cheaper than getting the one I have rebuilt. I'm probably gonna give the broken motor to the local antiques mall phonograph booth and see if he can sell it to someone who wants it. The one thing I will NOT do is scrap it.
im gonna go back in time, sadly he died like 30 years after this song came out, and tell him what it is! and im also gonna go back in time and hold a gun to hussie's head and force him to name jack eddie.
Over a century later, there's multiple covers (I can at least think of the acapella one, and there's two others although one never made it into the comic or an album), and several pieces of music making use of extensive samples of this. All because of some guy with a webcomic. The internet is a crazy and amazing place.
So in the song, the “Midnight Crew” basically refers to the singer going drinking/bar hopping? Aww, him choosing to bring his wife as well is so sweet!
I always thought that it was weird that in the acapella version on the Homestuck soundtrack, the guy pronounced "early" like "oirly," but I guess he was just mimicking the original.
You are very welcome, Victrolaman has no intention of ever removing this wonderful Eddie Morton selection. Watch out for the dreaded ear worm !! Another 100+ hits and we crack the 8000 mark. Eddie Morton is certainly looking down right now and smiling.
I have had this record for a long long time, maybe it is time to hold a Homestuck Members auction for the Record. Do you think that would be a well accepted, and get the members all excited to buy the record ?
Omg I would so buy it! I wish I had money, or at least the amount it's worth ): but I'd love to have the original of it on record, as there's NONE on the internet.
This song is really nice. I'd totally buy this old record player & vinyl for ironic purposes. And gee poor guy, he must be confused with these comments XD
Like a lot of people here, I found this through MSpaint Adventures. There is a bit of this song sampled for one of their videos. It's great seeing a piece of history like this, thanks for sharing such a rare piece of musical history!
I know, right? It's such a simple device it sometimes seems like it shouldn't work. I built one from scratch in gradeschool even (though it had a tendency to destroy anything played on it after a couple dozen attempts, with the not-purpose-built stylus)
I adore this song! Eddie Morton's voice inspires joy, as well as gentlemanly leisure and all around good feeling. This song is also my anthem, because I'm a night owl, and a wise bird, too! Really, just a fantastic song that I'm happy to have had the fortune of hearing, and a great classic. Thanks for sharing this, sir!
Wow! I've found it; a video on youtube that ISN'T a huge waste of time, a good, informative video to boot, and one that contains a catchy song from 102 years ago! I give you many props, sir.
Thank you so much OrangeRevenge for sharing this information with me. It makes me proud to know, that my sharing these wonderful Songs from the distant past, is touching a whole new generation who had no idea of the existence of this great song and the wonderful Eddie Morton until I placed it on my UA-cam Channel. Thank you for your comments, and for watching. Victrolaman
I appreciate most of the comments, but have had to remove a few from time to time because some contained profanity. Also note that in addition to this video, The music portion of this video was admittedly "ripped" from Victrolaman's efforts here, and used on the only other entry on You Tube of this wonderful song by Eddie Morton. That other entry now has over 135,000 hits. At least that individual was upfront enough to admit his use of Victrolaman's efforts, in his detailed information.
Except Fallout's music was around 50 years after this song, as it were. Interesting, isn't it? I believe this was before the big band era, though I could be wrong.
Another good one to watch would be the great gatsby probably, especially the old version. It's really interesting to see, the roaring 20's and all. American music was interesting back then. EDIT: Not that it's not interesting now, but it's so internationally the same that it's not as good, I suppose. Gotta be case-by-case on that.
exactly right friend :D i love how bioshock incorporated a little inkspots reference as well! Although the music itself may not be coming back, its nice to see games and comics like homestuck pay homage to it >u
I would just like to say thank you to both Homestuck, for leading me to this song that I never would have found otherwise, but I would also really like to thank you for uploading this, because if these kinds of songs weren't uploaded here a lot of them would be "lost" forever. Also the fact that this is available to the whole world to listen to whenever they want is pretty amazing. Thank you for helping to show the new generations some amazing music!
I think everyone who's ever heard this song can agree that it would be awesome to be a member of the Midnight Crew. Thank you so much, Victrolaman, for introducing a great singer to a younger generation!
as for many, Homestuck led me here. i can't really hear most of the lyrics since im not a native english speaker, but y'know, im glad that the "whos this douchebag" question got answered. 0u0
A few years ago, a friend and fellow collector and member of MOCAPS, had acquired a large amount of records from this era, and after picking out the ones he wanted to keep, he sold to rest to some of fellow collectors at a reasonable price. This was one that I was fortunate to buy from him.
Oh man, now I want to listen to all my grandmother's old records. The thought of listening to actual music from over a hundred years ago is just. Mindblowing. So awesome. Thank you so much!
I am one of those Homestuck fans, though I remember hearing this song years before then. Perhaps my grandfather played it for me/sang it as he is wont to do? Oh well. I love this song, and I find myself humming it while walking around quite often. I love that 102, almost 103 now years after it was made, this song is still one of the best I've ever heard. Thank you for posting this video.
You know what? Im happy im here from homestuck. If I wasn't a homestuck and i knew about this song I'd still listen to it, and eventually id learn about homestuck anyways because it comes up first
@marrionetta Nope, the reason does not matter to Victrolaman. I am happy they are here and watching and enjoying this historic performance on record no matter what the reason, and I am even happier now that we are well on our way to the 30,000 Mark !! Thanks for watching, and have a wonderful evening. Victrolaman
Thank you Victrolaman for providing this great historical piece. It's fascinating to know this piece's origin and to see how it was changed in the popular webcomic, knowing that none of the words changed.
Lowbloods are red Highbloods are blue Make her a member Of the midnight crew honestly though this song is amazing I would love it even if my mind didn't assiociate it with Homestuck
I just love all vaudeville toons, thanks for sharing this & at least it's getting exposure to younger audiences through HomeStuck. This is gonna be stuck in my head all night now. Haha~!
@Invadurr Thank you so much. I am so pleased and proud to know that some of my videos have inspired the current generation to take note and enjoy these wonderful forgotten songs and performances from the very early days of Recorded sound. Don't forget, Victrolaman has now posted over 400 entries on his UA-cam channel, which include an interesting variety of the Historic sounds found on record between the mid 1890's and the mid 1930's. Enjoy ! Victrolaman
I watched a few of these videos. I really enjoy listening to the ragtime. I wish some of these songs were easier to access. Thanks for the preservation of history.
I'm personally amazed that the song I'm listening to is over 100 years old now. It's one thing to see a photo of something from a century ago, but to actually experience it? Mind = blown.
Real glad Andrew Hussie got this popular. Doubt I'd have ever heard it otherwise. Just picked up Homestuck Vol. 8 and I've played this song QUITE a bit since then. Thank you Victrolaman, and thank you based hussie.
An excellent song--I've been a fan of old ragtime/vaudeville stuff for some time, but had never heard of Eddie Morton until Homestuck made a reference to him.
Thank you to all you modern day Midnight Crew Fans, for making this 100+ year old song by the great Eddie Morton, one of my more popular you tube efforts. in the past day or so it has gone from a little over 100 views to now almost 2800 !! Almost makes me want to go back and bone up on what that apparently bizarre, dark, creepy, but popular modern day Midnight Crew is up to. Thanks again, Victrolaman
I know it’s been years since you mentioned it. But out of curiosity, did you ever get around to reading up on Homestuck’s Midnight Crew? Also, I just wanna say thank you for uploading these old songs. I’ve been thinking about this one a lot lately, but the video I used to go for it was gone. It was really nice to be able to find it here and I’ll definitely be subscribing for more old music recommendations.
This is actually a better version than most I've heard; I know shouldn't feel this way because this song is over 100 years old, but it's really sad that most recordings I've heard have a pretty bad quality of sound (because it's over 100 years old)
I've loved this song for awhile, and listened to this version on this video multiple times, but I usually closed the window once the song was over. This time I watched all the way to the end, and even though I look at "1909" and think "that was awhile ago", hearing "101 years ago" just makes it really settle in for me - isn't technology grand? And the fact that this insanely old record is still around and - gah! So cool! Thanks again for uploading this gem and sharing it with the world! :)
There is nothing to be ashamed of. In this day and age, where there is such an abundance of music for such a large array of genres available, the main way people learn about new music - no matter the era from which it came - is word of mouth. Your musical pallet is not compromised simply because you learned of a band or artist via unconventional means. What matters is that you are willing to keep an open mind to music, and that you enjoy this song shows that you have done so. Enjoy this ragtime.
Watched it the first time because of Homestuck. Scratch that, first three times. Fourth time because damn that song it catchy. Fifth, I love the lyrics and wanted to hear the song again. Sixth, song was playing in my head all day. Seventh, eighth, ninth (etc...) I love this song.
@victrolaman And thank you to you, Mr. Victrolaman, for uploading all of this great musical history. Woke up today to read my favorite comic, and wound up hearing some awesome vintage music as a bonus.
Thanks for preserving history, and I'm actually really glad this song and the genre are getting recognized. Homestuck fans are a weird bunch, but a good bunch. A young bunch, generally, and it's great that a piece of history like this song is getting exposed and loved by the next generation.
Thank you, vic, for sharing that with us. And thank you Andrew and whoever made that other song containing a line from this one, and including it in homestuck. derp
Everyone's apologizing to this poor man (and let's be honest it's rightfully so) but this is BY FAR this man's most liked and most viewed video so you know. He's a hit!
I think it's great that victrolaman is taking this influx of bizarre internet strangers in stride. Victrolaman, thank you for sharing this with us. Not only did it provide a wonderful "old-timey" dash of flavor to an original musical composition on MS Paint Adventures, but we all now have the opportunity to see your video and share in your love of the music and the medium. You have no idea how perfect this really is.
You know, no matter how far technology advances, things like this really still continue to amaze me. They operate on such simple principles, (though this is a relative term used cautiously in response to those that may feel differently) yet they are able to produce such elegant sound. I have a modern player that I play my Pink Floyd record on from time to time, but the sound...I think you really cannot really beat the sound of the older models. Kind of funny. We lose a little to gain a little.
Check Brodemus. Re-read of all of Homestuck, both VN and if you hate yourself there's a read of the Epilogues in progress. Enormous quality is voice and chat.
This has been my favourite song for years. I am here not to congratulate homestuck but to mourn Flash, about to die in three months time. It has been a great run. At least there was a readthrough uploaded a few moths ago.
@victrolaman I did the ebay search but I never even thought to make a permanent search for it. Thank you very much and thank you for putting this video up!
Though I was also brought about here by homestuck, I am still happy to listen to this. XD I always enjoy originals~~ I applaud you Eddie Morton. Thank you! ^^
I was just reading homestuck and I read the update of the midnight crew with this song in it and I just had to hunt it down ;) its really great and I love it
eddie morton is the true first member of the midnight crew
Eddie Morton and Spades Slick were the same person, actually.

So much insult to Morton.
I came here from Homestuck but this is actually a good song

It's an awesome song, AND The Midnight Crew was named after it!
Much better than the acapella. Which was really good so yeah

Also, I just wanna say thank you for uploading these old songs. I’ve been thinking about this one a lot lately, but the video I used to go for it was gone. It was really nice to be able to find it here and I’ll definitely be subscribing for more old music recommendations.
@@MarchHarrigan Yes I did read up on it, years ago, while the popularity of what I posted was going on. I even commented on it.
Thank you for helping me learn about something I dug into about a year ago.
I already know what Homstuck is now.
It's been just over ten years since this song was featured and this video was linked in Homestuck! April 19th, 2011
Thanks for preserving history, and I'm actually really glad this song and the genre are getting recognized. Homestuck fans are a weird bunch, but a good bunch. A young bunch, generally, and it's great that a piece of history like this song is getting exposed and loved by the next generation.
This song gives me the chills. Awesome.
No thumbs down, that just proves how great this really is.
He's a hit!
A hundred one years ago? Wow, that's amazing! :D Such a lovely song!
Good to see that there's people out there that still hang on to old songs from an arguably better musical era. Thank you.
Hey Victrolaman, Thanks from all of us for putting up with us!
We lose a little to gain a little.
imagine reading homestuck in 2020
haha
Easier than in 2021 since flash is dying
:D

Check Brodemus. Re-read of all of Homestuck, both VN and if you hate yourself there's a read of the Epilogues in progress. Enormous quality is voice and chat.
This has been my favourite song for years. I am here not to congratulate homestuck but to mourn Flash, about to die in three months time. It has been a great run. At least there was a readthrough uploaded a few moths ago.
@victrolaman I did the ebay search but I never even thought to make a permanent search for it. Thank you very much and thank you for putting this video up!
This is actually a really great song. I freaking love it.
So who's your favorite MC member? Mine's tied between SS and DD.
Good ol' deuce with his hat full of bomb, hand full of penis and head full of empty.
Jack Noir/Spades Slick is my ALL TIME favourite antagonist from any story. I also really like Deuce, though.
Though I was also brought about here by homestuck, I am still happy to listen to this. XD I always enjoy originals~~ I applaud you Eddie Morton. Thank you! ^^
@TwosComplement
On the contrary, we would never had found such a wonderful piece of music otherwise.
I really adore this song, even though it's way before my time. It makes me so happy!
I was just reading homestuck and I read the update of the midnight crew with this song in it and I just had to hunt it down ;) its really great and I love it
love records, such charm to them.
Many thanks for the upload! This makes me want a record player.
