    Statuit ei Dominus
    testamentum pacis,
    et principem fecit eum;
    ut sit illi
    sacerdotii dignitas
    in aeternum.
    Alleluja, alleluja.
    The Lord made to him
    a covenant of peace,
    and made him a prince;
    that the dignity
    of priesthood
    should be to him for ever.
    Alleluia, alleluia.

      +Paul Tarsus It makes no real difference to me, but in case you would like to know, this is a reconstruction of Western Byzantine music, i.e. from a time when there was no "Orthodox vs. Catholic" (or, at best, as it was beginning to emerge). That is, like Paul of Tarsus himself.... In any case, God bless you, my brother in Christ!

      This music is not Byzantine, dude. You can download the manuscript PDFs and do a comparative analysis of both complete genres even without a musicology degree. They are not the same.

    Like the first light of dawn, this music opens the eyes to new promises and all the wonders of nature. Evocative of belief in "the afterlife" and powers beyond observation, these pieces pull the strings of the heart, draw nostalgia and awaken loves, skinned lives and sleepy watchmen

    This sounds remarkably similar to byzantine chant. Although, I guess correctly it'd be the other way around. With Byzantine/Greek Orthodox chant coming first, and old latin adopting their music later.

    The old Roman chants most likely preceded the mass in Gregorian chant. Pope Gregory I (Saint Gregory the Great-ca. 540-604 ad) is said to have introduced Gregorian chant into the Latin Mass. So one can presume these old Roman chants probably go back to the 4th and 5th centuries. I'm not a music historian so this is an estimate.

    • @coemgenus6251

      +Kirk Bonner Good guess. It's more complex, however.
      Gregorian chant is named after St. Gregory, but really had nothing to do with him, at least as we use the term historically. The Old Roman chants, as written down on paper, are 300 years younger than the Gregorian chant. But both lines do stem from the same source at Rome. The chant St. Gregory sang was thus the ancestor of both "Old Roman" and "Gregorian" as we call them. His 7th-century chant is at best a reconstruction from guesswork. But, remember these are all one big oral tradition, so it's not unreasonable to assume, to an extent, that the chant in the 600s, perhaps even in the 300s, had a lot of groundwork similaries to this recording. On the other hand, a lot can change in 400 years without the aid of paper.

      +Coemgenus Thanks, Coemgenus. I'm not an historian of music, let alone religious music. My impressions was that Old Roman chants were probably sung (chanted might be a better term) in the 5th-8th centuries. One thing seems clearly certain and that is chants were used at the very beginnings of Christianity during the mass. No doubt things changed some over the ages. Re writing down music, I'm not sure when this was done. No paper. True. But both parchment and vellum were available, and as Christianity developed and was eventually accepted by the Roman Empire (the Edict of Milan in 311 AD), it had many wealthy patrons who would have provided money to purchase such things.

    If you truly knew early Christian history you would not make that erroneous claim. Here are some early Christian writers; the first one is Ignatius of Antioch. what is so special about Ignatius? He was the disciple of St. John the Apostle, the one who wrote Revelation and the Gospel of John. All of his letters are the learned teachings handed on by St. John. Read his letters, you can look it up { Ignatius- Letter To The Smyrneans}. All of his letters speak of the Church being Catholic.

      And it has been shown by biblical scholars that the gospel according to John was NOT written by said apostle... it was written by an anonymous author. Likewise, Revelation MAY have been written by the apostle John, but the majority of biblical scholars are not convinced. Some think that John of Patmos may be the actual author. Just a different point of view.

    If this is early 'Roman' chant, then the name 'Roman' is a bit misleading. One must remember that the earliest Christians in Italy were greek speaking, and so the chant they would have used would naturally stem from their homeland (thus the similarity to graeco-byzantine melody and rhythm). How do I know they were greek speakers? There was a major clash-confrontation in the first third of the third century in Italy over using greek or latin in the liturgy. Google it in Cath. Encyc.

      Pärt based his composition on the Gregorian entrance anthem from a thousand years ago. This here is the Roman version of the same anthem, also from a thousand years. It's like hip hop artists who love to sample superior music. XD

    @ bostonhomeland, INRI = Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iedaeorum... literally, Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews. It is why the Jewish elders went to Pilate and objected about what he had written. Going through a Latin dictionary to find words that fit with your obvious anti-Catholic agenda does not showcase an advanced education, just your well-equipped bigotry

    So? IF somebody named Ignoramus was a student of God's Son's student, that doesn't mean he is perfect. What was the Inquisition for, & how can the killings be justified? Christ was peace, never killed people to promote morality. Rome (gentile) did. So Roman Catholic that hijacked Christianity into the cult after killing the prophets & Christ witnesses/apostles & those that preached against Rome (e.g biblical Christ, according to scripture which they forbade their sheeple from reading) is faulty.
