  • SAU's Violin Celebration X, featuring 400 Suzuki Violinists at Abravanel Hall (10/9/21). This culturally rich music takes us back to the USA in the 1820's when this simple, silly fiddle song made it's debut in our new country.
    Composer: USA Folk Song (1820's)
    Arranger & Conductor: Peggy Wheelwright
Turkey in the Straw first became popular in the 1820’s as a fiddle piece. Though it went through some hard times when it was used in disrespectful theater, it’s become popular again today as string players like us reclaim its roots as a simple, silly, fiddle song. We can all do our part to learn the history of our music and find the good in it. While the Suzuki method books don’t include fiddling, fiddlers use the Suzuki method every day, making fiddling come quite naturally to us! Playing by ear is an essential skill for a good fiddler in order to harmonize and improvise.
This cultural celebration was sponsored by the Suzuki Association of Utah (SAU) and supported many volunteers. Participants include Suzuki violin students and teachers from Ogden to Provo (and beyond). Thanks to all the teachers, students, parents, and professionals who helped create this fun 4-part violin rendition of "Turkey in the Straw."
