Naw, wouldnt have worked. The judge only gave his opinion AFTER the trial when Anthony's lawyer brought it up. And besides, the judge actually gave him a lenient sentence. Life with a chance of parole in only 15 years, for killing 7 cops? Anthony should have been jumping for joy!

Of all people in this movie, Anthony made better decisions than anyone. He chose to fight for his country and was a beast at it, chose to take care of his daughter and Juanita in the face of all he was going through. Clearly many had few options which is based on facts after a war like that. Had he gotten away, nobody would be talking about choices. He would be a damn legend. Btw his dad was a chump. As a veteran I couldn't imagine coming back from war and having nothing. Not being able to take care of your family. While my heart strings say he was only trying to provide for his family. He caused the deaths of others while committing the crime. He took what little power he had left and put it in the hands of a very racially in just system. So he chose this route. Unfortunately. While his situation was dire what do you say to families of those guys who lost their lives. Saying I was trying to feed my family doesn't change help that. Yeah one of the saddest movies of all time. He started off with such promise but made some very horrid decisions. He was smart enough to find another way.

He did I also understand why he got mad, the judge basically brushed aside of the Vietnam War by saying it wasn’t a “real war” when all wars in this country are real being I served in one. The losses he took and the PTSD was taken as a joke. But in all, Anthony and the crew was wrong for robbing the truck but they woulda been good had not Cleon self snitched 🤦🏾‍♂️.

    • @jsmacks11
      @jsmacks11 4 місяці тому +4

It is a case of "My war was better than yours".
Yes Anthony and his friends was involved and responsible for the murdering of individuals.
That said the judge makes it apparent he is ignoring any affects the trauma the war could have played in these actions.
Also race is probably a factor as well. It probably didn't help the sentencing that one of the Robbers was a Radical.
How would the judge reacted if the convicted where white.
A big concept of this movie is neglect.
The star felt neglected by the system, his baby mama and probably was a big reason to do the Robbery in the first place.
He went off because he knew he was getting the kitchen sink and the judge went on a moral tirade and basically said his accomplishments in life didn't amount to shit. The one thing he had was him being a war hero and this was used against him (actually this was used against him multiple times by Cowboy, His baby mama, Cutty), he decided to go off. On a deeper level I think he understood that many Blacks wouldn't support his war accomplishments but he had a glimpse of hope that maybe a conservative white judge would understand.

I'm on how this judge is comparing the Korean war to the Vietnam war? They both fought in Asian countries to prevent communism. What if someone who fought in WW1 told him the Korean wasn't a real war? War is war. People have died protecting the U.S. in both wars. The judge also said to Anthony that "he's a disgrace to everybody that's has ever put on that uniform" yet insulted and demeaned an entire generation of people that has ever fought and served during the Vietnam war. Where's the logic in that?

What always baffled me was the lack of family support Anthony had. He's out here and can barely find work, when he comes from a decent middle class family. By the work uniform his father had on at the dinner table, he probably made steady income with benefits so why didn't he extend an olive branch to Anthony by getting him a job?? Seems like his brother did well for himself so he probably could've given Anthony a loan to tie him over until he got on his feet.Anthony was probably too proud to ask for help though. Same with Juanita. She came from a decent home too, but chose to raise their daughter in the projects when she probably could've just stayed home until she got herself together.

Joining the Army played a part in his downfall, but I feel like it's a bit more complex than that. There's really no one reason that we can point to for validation. It was an accumulation of things that sort of built up in his mind until they became this skyscraper of emotional pressure. Him not being selfish and knowing he has to be a provider is what led to him gaining the balls to pull off what he had done. Earlier in the film, while he, Louise, & Kirby were riding around, you hear them contemplating the LICK, but Anthony wasn't quite over the edge at that point cause he was employed.

Anthony actually didn't change much throughout the movie.
I think even though he was a fairly straight and narrow kid, he had a fascination for respect and power. That's why he looked up to Skip. Also Skip treated Anthony with respect (even though he was probably using Anthony without him really knowing any better). He thought going to the military and war would give him the same respect as Skip.
The war only brought trauma and didn't bring the respect he wanted. I think that's why he went back to Skip for ideas. Skip was Anthony's biggest downfall.

my quick 2 cent . the turning point for Anthony was when he return and reunited with Jaunita. and how do I know this ???? let's observe his demeanor from the time he arrived home in that cab.. he was calm , a bit happy to see Skip, Kirby , Jose' , and we see Anthony laughing , ready to get back to his old love of playing pool , reconnecting with Kirby . he was getting adjusted to civilian life . I follow several active duty Army vloggers and they all said "the military will make you a different person ". and they will break that civilian mentality out if you" ... but what about when war is over ??? these vets have to fend for themselves . I see military personnel as sentinels . that's what they are . but still human. when Anthony arrived at Jaunita / Delilahs house the mood is somber , very little laughter , joy .. Anthony is getting back to reality, but he wasnt stressed . then as the movie progresses , Anthony is being treated like a stray dog ... Between Jaunita nagging him about a job, allowing Cutty to be present and throwing his sideways smart comments , Cowboy taking political jabs at him... this was a perfect storm for what Anthony would turn to out of desperation . so yes , I still see Juanita as the villian , not Anthony . he was genuinely a good dude , tried to live and work the honest way but he had too many elements working against him. the turning point was at that dinner table when Juanita was grilling him about a job and being a real man , and Cutty shoving that damn gun in his face ... this broke him ... and notice the next few scenes he's devising a plan to rob a bank truck.

I noticed that as well, from the moment he connected to Juanita he went downhill, should have just worked to take care of his daughter and left her alone

@@maxinekanner5434 I don't think that was his daughter . which is a helluva plot twist .Juanita drove him crazy

@atiashaunbaker3792 I never considered that might not even be his daughter, that would make his downfall even worse
