Nice fix, Vince. The problem of not opening the tray is the classic "sticky tray" problem - rubber band gets dusty and a little loose over the years and can't overcome the force of the magnet holding the tray closed. If the dvd tray is sticky and you want to open it, never ever pull on it to try to open it, you will just end up breaking the front bezel. The solution is to tap the console with your hand just above the dvd drive, the tap will release the tray from the magnet and it will open. Also, consoles that are 12v 12.1a (so called Jasper) like you got there are safe to buy, they are rock solid and most reliable of all Xbox 360 models including slim. They will only have minor issues and will never have cpu/gpu problems.

Vince, there isn't much to worry about with this 360 console now that you have fixed the drive issues and cleaned it up. This is the final revision of the "phat" Xbox 360, better known as the "Jasper" revision. This model of the console isn't one to have bad issues with the CPU and GPU like older models did, so reliability is very similar to the Slim model if not exactly the same. I'd say you lucked up quite nicely since you got a console for cheap that is reliable and only had some minor issues with the disc drive. Excellent video!
Vince, you really shouldn't fully reassemble something until you've verified it's working. Always just assemble the minimum possible for testing. You'll save yourself a lot of time and work.
the older consoles i think are better than the new ones because they made quality parts and the assembly was modular so you did not have to spend a lot of money to mend them nice fix vince and you only really need to change the thermal paste if it had the yellow light of death
Yellow light of death is a hardware failure, a PS3 hardware failure. Replacing thermals does not fix hardware failures. It took Microsoft and Sony years to make 360's and PS3's that lasted reliably. Quality is not something I associate with any console, the are all made on the cheap. If you really want quality, build a decent gaming PC.
@@relaxxxrrr the PS4 is definitely a quality console I had one that lasted 5 years, ran basically 24/7 and been dropped about 3 or 4 times and it still ran like new.
At 16:08 where your right thumb is on it is a guide rail (at 17:32 right) that moves this black, sliding part. If the pin (at 17:38 right in front of the right limit switch) of the sliding part is not in the guide rail, it will not work either. So the drawer is tried to move out while the laser unit is not completely pulled down.
Just remember Vince, if you swap the disc drives the disc drive motherboards are married to the motherboard so you have to put the old disc drive board in the new drive
@@davidotahal4365 this was definitely a thing with the Xbox 360s the optical drive was married to the motherboard. So when you replaced the optical drive you had to swap the old drives board into the new optical drive or else it wouldn't read games or movies period

I recommend investing in a DataVac newer electronics have a good resistance to ESD but there's always that off chance something may happen. The DataVac can be used to clean anything and it's better than buying cans of compressed air. If you have an air compressor that will work as well.
Great video! I've found often this happens when dust gets inbetween the pads that get pushed together when the drive is closed (at least on Lite-On and BenQ). So the drive doesn't know if the tray is closed or open :)
Vince, That belt is a common problem. When it gets weak; it has trouble separating the two parts of the spindle (one is on the top cover) which are magnetic. That's why it opened fine with the cover off, and not with the cover on the drive. This is the same reason it opened with the disc in the drive, and not without it. The disc separates the magnet, and takes some of the resistance way. You can change the belt without taking apart the console. Use a thin sheet of rigid plastic (I use the cover off of a cheap pocket notebook), and slide it in the top of the drive carefully until it reaches the spindle while ejecting the drive. This will help separate the spindle, and it should open. It works on most tray load drives. Once the door is open; unplug the console, and you can access the belt with long reach tweezers through the front of the drive. I do this all the time, and it only takes about 5 minutes to change the belt.
Watching this one reminded me that I have three or four Xbox 360s that needed attention and turns out two of them have this exact same fault! Also, just watched Vince's push-up challenge vid he did with his son a few years ago so, challenge accepted! Lol Thanks for the inspiration @mymatevince ! Keep it up mate!
Great video. The only suggestion don't use a feather duster it can create static, a small hair paint brush is better at the same time while using your Hoover. Keep up the good work.
Yeaaaah. Finally Vince is back. :) Saturday afternoon: A Mortadell Sandwich, a Coffee and a Vince Video. Weekend - here i come :D "Yes - I can...excellent": Vince Obama
Vacuuming does cause static buildup which can damage sensitive electronics, however in practice this is fairly rare as modern electronics are pretty resilient to ESD. The ones telling you it's no problem have probably been vacuuming their desktop PC for years without any issues, that does not mean it's a good idea however. It's always better to use something that won't cause static buildup like canned air. I myself used to clean my desktop PC by vacuuming the inside and never had any issues, but have switched over to canned air as it's just safer. In short both sides are partly correct. You shouldn't vacuum sensitive electronics, but it *probably* won't do any damage if you do.
You should consider buying a "Metro DataVac" from Amazon. Its an electric air blower that works like having perpetual canned air/duster, and works a lot better than a vacuum. You'd definitely want to use it outdoors as it blows very hard but its perfect for cleaning computers and electronics out. Its like 85 pounds but well worth it.
Hey vince. It looks like you have a jasper v2 model 360. The main difference between jasper v1 and v2 is the ram chips and the heatsink. Every thing else including the power brick is the same. FYI the jasper v2 is also known as a “kronos” model. These jaspers/kronos’ are the most reliable of the platform, more reliable than the slim and E models. Mine is running strong to this day! Live your vids so much. If you want more info you can go on Wikipedia’s “ Xbox 360 models” page. Luke Edit: Greetings from Australia.
Excellent! =D I laughed when it wouldn't eject after you re-assembled it lol The same belt problem happens with the old original XBOX systems too. Vaccuum - technically the ESD police will claim that its high risk, but its pretty low risk imo. I've vaccuumed thousands of electronic devices out over the years and never had a problem. Feather duster I would avoid like the plague though lol - those things generate huge amounts of static!
Lol, I knew if the vacuum didn't get the ESD police then the duster definitely would!!!!! I think it was trying to 'troll' me Chris, working perfectly when apart and then not when back together. BTW I got an Atari Lynx (original version) the other day Chris, it is supposed to be dead so I may need your expertise on that one, I was looking on your channel but I could only find the Lynx 2. I am hoping they have a similar insides :-)
Hehe =D Regards the Lynx, they are pretty much the same! The board is layed out differently, but the components are the same. It has likely got a failed mosfet transistor. You can trick them into powering up with that fault by wiring the ground (from the battery bay) up to the ground on the headphone jack socket. I think that works because the mosfet is effectively switching the ground line, and by joining those up with a wire you bypass that soft power on. Once it does power up, check 5v somewhere to make sure it IS 5v and not 9V (or that can kill other things). If the zener diode on there fails the 5v line can go up to 9v.
@@GadgetUK164 Thanks for the tips Chris. I will re watch your Lynx vid right now to see what's what. I would prefer if possible not to muck this one up as I was something I really wanted back in school - 16 bit in a handheld, when my master system was an 8 bit!!!! Unfortunately it was a little bit pricey for a birthday pressie back then :-)
I dont like Fifa and I dont like consoles. But watching your friendly neighborhood Vince fix an old console with Fifa in it, makes for an enjoyable video anyway.
I know it's a old video but I really enjoyed watching you mess about with the 360 would love to see a couple more of the 360 fat n slim getting the Vince touch. Also I use to put the rubber bands in cold water after it's been in boiling and that seemed to keep it fixed
Hi Vince, i used to fix these alot a few years ago, the drive problems are usualy the drive belt ie elastic band, or the laser takes a dive, if you need to replace the drive they are married to the motherboard, ie if you replaced the drive you need to flash the original firmware on to that new dvd drive or it will not work, and check my dreamcast video out if you didnt get around to fixing yours, keep up the great work, love your fix it videos :)
Hallelujah! 👍 It also sounds like there's a little slippage on the laser rail as well. Used to get this on PS2's a lot, as they were plastic rails that worn down over time.
I tend to do amateur repares on Xbox 360. The green light flashing means that the disk tray is opening/closing. If it's stuck try replacing the band. I had recently bought one that would refuse to open, simply putting a new band in it made it work good as new. I hope this helps. Even just a little. Also, the heat syncs are attached to the motherboard itself as well as the metal shield, they are somewhat difficult to do. but with practice and the right tools you can get it done easily. Edit: I only watched the first few minutes. But my advice might help if you get another?
So, in reference to the hoovering and so on. It's completely fine to hoover as long as you have the correct attachment, if you're using the brush. If they're plastic and plastic only, plastic doesn't carry static. So it's completely fine to use
i hoovered so many things, mainboards, cellphones, consoles, virtually everything that has circuits in it and i NEVER fried one of them doing so. it cant be that big of a risk, i mean professionals do it too, pro tip: use a soft brush to agitate the dust right in front of the nozzle, this gets the parts very easy very clean!
You can heat those seals up with a blow dryer or heat gun and get them off in perfect condition 90% of the time. I've fixed 100s of these things over the years. Unfortunately they can't all be fixed, especially if they were damaged from someone trying to fix it before myself or another decent repair guy like Vince gete's our hands on them. With that said I'm sitting on about 25 consoles that are simply good for spare parts only now.
I had this disc drive problem before, I don't know if you resolved it but the way I dealt with it was pretty basic. For some reason the top magnet that holds the disc to the spindle is too strong and sticks to the spindle when there is no game in the drive. That is what is causing the blockage and not letting the tray eject, so I just left a disc in the tray at all times and I never had the problem again. I know it is a pain but I could not find a way around this one. Hope this helps.
Well Done Vince a nice easy fix. Was going to say I'll buy you a work bench for Christmas but I seen by one of the previous comments that you apparently like to work on the floor, maybe a set of Kneepads would be more appropriate lol. Mick Northern Ireland 👍🍻
Well it was a little rocky, but you nailed the infamous flashing light of Death! i have a few old 360 consoles that may be given another chance of life now! Thank You!
with the tray closed, you can turn the pulley under the front of the door, you can insert a small scewdriver and rotate the pulley manually and it will slowly open the tray.
i had this same issue with my xbox 360 a while ago and i had to use a dining knife in the top to make it come open mine was down to the metal case of the disk drive and plastics fowling the opening mechanism and in the end had to bend the metal just a touch and adjust the case slightly cant remember what i did it was over a year ago and then it opened and closed normally after that but dont quote me i had another that i did same to and it didnt solve it so not sure could be various reasons but mainly pc game now, But awesome vid keep it up Vince :D
I suggest that you change the thermal paste anyway. To do it, you need to undo the black screws, turn the motherboard and remove the x-clamps with the x-clamps tool that you can order online. DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THEM WITH THE SCREWDRIVER, OR YOU WILL END DAMAGING THE BOARD IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE. Ciao Vincenzo
I have a Jasper based 360. Still works great to this day. It too has the problem with the drive not wanting to open, but it only does it when the drive is empty. I now am planning to boil my rubber band...
As far as using a vacuum , it is not recommended to vacuum near ic boards. I use a air brush and blow dust into air and have nozzle ready to catch it. You can get dedicated anti static vacuums with a earth strip running along inside of hose to nozzle, but I would use those with caution, as some chips are very sensitive.
I'll say it again - a can of electrical contact cleaner would be better for cleaning that microswitch than IPA. No need to use expensive de-oxit. A cheap can from an electrical supply store will do.
Yeah the ProElec branded stuff from CPC does a great job for £2 and has the advantage that you can just douse it everywhere and not carw. Just as good as DeOxit for 99 percent of jobs.
Fixed my Sega mega drive other day, clean console and light dust cartridge slot.Repair the antenna it was cut, didn't need the switch for TV changed.Press and hold the reset button for five seconds . F1 gp and PGA golf worked and controllers. Well pleased.
the problem was the black slider that moves the disc reader up and down. he just got lucky on the last rebuild that the slider pin went into the right slot and was moving the slider like it is supposed to when the tray moves in and out. you can clearly see the track on the bottom of the tray at 17:31 and you can see the pin at 37:58 at top middle-ish of the screen.
Also if you do plan on changing the thermal paste you can make yourself a xclamp tool with an old xclamp. You cut off one of the ends where the standoffs of heatsinks go open with a dremel and it works great for removing them without damaging them. If you need more info on how to make the tool let me know.
I found it funny when you did the last eject test I thought the Xbox made the sound effect of saying hallelujah like finally he’s closing up the system for good lol great job mate god bless you and your family
The only issue with this unit is the closing/opening mechanism in the discdrive... When you openned it up for cleaning, it is clearly visible that the laser and the motor were not closing up. So the disk drive doesn't send the signal back to the consol that it's now close/open... hence you get the flashing green light. If you are unable to fix the mechanism, the only option you have is to hook the discdrive to a pc, read the dvdkey out, and flash it to a new dvd drive to replace it.
Vince my 360 Elites disk drive gets stuck as well, a solution I've discovered it just whacking the top of the 360, it shakes something into position and allows for the disk drive to open.
Hey there Vince I'm enjoying the videos a lot... I do have a question for you where is a good place to order new board bits from.... got a wii u that needs a new zif connector for the front I/o board but can't figure out where to get one other then a dead board? (Sorry I am not commenting about the 360 as I don't have one and wanted to comment in the most recent video I could find.)
That worked at first but I eventually I had to smack the top of the console to get it to open sometimes, I suspect the plastic of the disc tray had warped.
The arm that moves between the two switches needs to be to the far right when you reinstall the disk tray.if it opens when cover is off the belt is stretched and doesn't have enough friction to overcome the strength of the magnet.
Vince! If you ever find that a disk tray is broken. They're basically beyond salvage. The disk tray is married to the motherboard, but you can by-pass this by having an IDENTICAL optical drive. Most of the time it'll have the same pattern where the actual CD sits. There are 3 versions I believe and then the board on the inside will be different sometimes even though the tray can be the same, so checking serial numbers and dates/years of manufacture is a must and all you need to do is solder off the original board and put it on the donation optical drive. Quite straight forward, I had to do it with mine due to a dying laser that was chewing up my disks
Hi Vince love the videos! I want to ask a question. In one of your videos, you had this thing where you plugged this HDMI to I think a PS4 and it told you the resolution of the video output. What is that called? I want one for myself for my own repairs lol.
This is a late revision of the 360. It's the Jasper revision, the last one before the Slim model came out. This model is as reliable as the Slim model is.
9600GTMAN look at the power connector on the 360 motherboard. The plastic piece at the top you’ll notice is split down the middle where older revisions have 1 piece straight across. The power brick has nothing to do with what motherboard it is.
9600GTMAN That’s because the Jasper has a more power efficient GPU inside going from a 90nm die to a 65nm one. I’m sure there’s other little things that were changed to combat the heat and power efficiency issues of the Falcon and especially Xenon and Zephyr units.

Very entertaining video. Having repaired several thousand of these units from 2006-2017, I enjoyed the diagnostic procedure from a d.i.y. person.
the older consoles i think are better than the new ones because they made quality parts and the assembly was modular so you did not have to spend a lot of money to mend them nice fix vince and you only really need to change the thermal paste if it had the yellow light of death
This work only on Xbox One, no? I never heard that you must do this on 360.
@@davidotahal4365 this was definitely a thing with the Xbox 360s the optical drive was married to the motherboard. So when you replaced the optical drive you had to swap the old drives board into the new optical drive or else it wouldn't read games or movies period
@@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 ok, but XOne have the same issue
@@davidotahal4365 I'm not surprised, seems to be a Xbox thing, like how the original Xbox hard drives were married to the motherboard
David Otáhal its on both consoles so modders cant just replace the disk drive
Once again love the videos your expertise has grown in leaps and bounds your unsoldering of minute chips is nothing short of amazing I really love the way all vacuum cleaners to the English are always HOOVERS keep up the good work Vince great stuff old and new you deserve every penny made from your videos they are so expertly edited and recorded your equipment is of the highest quality As to hoovering big dirt filled parts I'd rather do that than breathe in dirty contaminated dust
That was totally awesome to watch James. I hope you make more videos like these. I am actually learning a lot from you.
I recommend investing in a DataVac newer electronics have a good resistance to ESD but there's always that off chance something may happen. The DataVac can be used to clean anything and it's better than buying cans of compressed air. If you have an air compressor that will work as well.
40:30 I love seeing Xbox 360 (and PS3) consoles working again
Great video! I've found often this happens when dust gets inbetween the pads that get pushed together when the drive is closed (at least on Lite-On and BenQ). So the drive doesn't know if the tray is closed or open :)
I will Always have a Like for you brother! Really enjoy the Projects you get into!
Was just watching a bunch of 360 videos the other day, what a perfect timing for this one to join my bunch!
You have the patience of a saint, well done m8
You sir are a wizard, congrats on a job very well done!
Weekend - here i come :D

@Kris Nicholson That could certainly be a problem too, but it's not one that's frequently mentioned, if ever.
The fact that you did this with no prior knowledge of disassembling a xbox 360 is amazing

The Compucleaner on Amazon is just as good and only £50
Just what the doctor ordered to cure my boredom!
He posted this when I was getting ready for work this morning. I was like well I know what im doing after work today lol.
Good Job man!! I enjoyed watching every second 🥇
Luke
Edit: Greetings from Australia.
Thanks Nandi, always lovely to get one of your views :-)
Great Vid, I love getting broken things and trying to fix them, well mostly just love taking them apart haha
Great stuff Vince well done 👍👍
i hoovered so many things, mainboards, cellphones, consoles, virtually everything that has circuits in it and i NEVER fried one of them doing so. it cant be that big of a risk, i mean professionals do it too, pro tip: use a soft brush to agitate the dust right in front of the nozzle, this gets the parts very easy very clean!
Would really recommend some air duster cans for dusting. Perfect for fans and small nooks and crannys.
@The retro gamer with old consoles im confused but i support it
He needs and electric duster!
Thank You!
Great fix here also your perseverance is astounding :)
Complete entertainment Vince.Thanx.
with the tray closed, you can turn the pulley under the front of the door, you can insert a small scewdriver and rotate the pulley manually and it will slowly open the tray.
i had this same issue with my xbox 360 a while ago and i had to use a dining knife in the top to make it come open mine was down to the metal case of the disk drive and plastics fowling the opening mechanism and in the end had to bend the metal just a touch and adjust the case slightly cant remember what i did it was over a year ago and then it opened and closed normally after that but dont quote me i had another that i did same to and it didnt solve it so not sure could be various reasons but mainly pc game now, But awesome vid keep it up Vince :D
Nice job Vince !!!
Love your videos and your music of choice for your videos
Hey Vince, it's the magnet in the drive, best leave a disc in there and the issue don't happen.
Well done Vince. Nice fix.
Helpful video 👍
at 16:00 it didnt look like the tray closing was lifting the sled at all, likely some of the issue. Wonder if the sled also has a switch
What happened at 6:20? I was looking forward to some classical music...
I noticed that after it had processed. Not sure how I managed to skip that part!!!
I'll say it again - a can of electrical contact cleaner would be better for cleaning that microswitch than IPA. No need to use expensive de-oxit. A cheap can from an electrical supply store will do.
A friend of mine recommended mineral oil or something like that. What do you think ?
Yeah the ProElec branded stuff from CPC does a great job for £2 and has the advantage that you can just douse it everywhere and not carw. Just as good as DeOxit for 99 percent of jobs.
@@jasejj I guess I'll try some of that then. Thanks for the info
What determination! I’d already be out in my drive with a 5lb sledge. Fixed 👍🏼
Also if you do plan on changing the thermal paste you can make yourself a xclamp tool with an old xclamp. You cut off one of the ends where the standoffs of heatsinks go open with a dremel and it works great for removing them without damaging them. If you need more info on how to make the tool let me know.
i would like to know please. Thank you.
The other thing is, you need to change the heatsink on the GPU, its one of the older versions and will cause RROD.
Great stuff right there, subbed.
Vince my 360 Elites disk drive gets stuck as well, a solution I've discovered it just whacking the top of the 360, it shakes something into position and allows for the disk drive to open.
Haha everyone makes that mistake with the eject button first time
Another great video what do with all the things you try to fix do u sell them or do they collect dust
Good worK,matey.I remember the original first Xboxs had this issue and cleaning the belt usually solves it
Hey there Vince I'm enjoying the videos a lot... I do have a question for you where is a good place to order new board bits from.... got a wii u that needs a new zif connector for the front I/o board but can't figure out where to get one other then a dead board? (Sorry I am not commenting about the 360 as I don't have one and wanted to comment in the most recent video I could find.)
Cool video Vince
Those older Xbox’s don’t like to open on the side only standing up
That would explain why my old Xbox 360 fat disk tray would open and close when it was on its side but stayed open standing up
That worked at first but I eventually I had to smack the top of the console to get it to open sometimes, I suspect the plastic of the disc tray had warped.
The arm that moves between the two switches needs to be to the far right when you reinstall the disk tray.if it opens when cover is off the belt is stretched and doesn't have enough friction to overcome the strength of the magnet.
29:10 My xbox disc tray does this sometimes also, all you had to do was tap the top of the console with your palm.
34:09 you need to clean the little rubber ring ; 38:14 when motor spins it's faster than when you round it manually and it sleeves, clean it w ipa.
I love 360 original
i´m surprised it´s not a RROD considering it is so dirty and disgustingly dusty
This is a late revision of the 360. It's the Jasper revision, the last one before the Slim model came out. This model is as reliable as the Slim model is.
oh cool thanks for the info
9600GTMAN look at the power connector on the 360 motherboard. The plastic piece at the top you’ll notice is split down the middle where older revisions have 1 piece straight across. The power brick has nothing to do with what motherboard it is.
9600GTMAN That’s because the Jasper has a more power efficient GPU inside going from a 90nm die to a 65nm one. I’m sure there’s other little things that were changed to combat the heat and power efficiency issues of the Falcon and especially Xenon and Zephyr units.
