  • In this product test, we put our Goldilocks Automotive Elite Series against DEI Reflect-A-Gold and the eBay cheap stuff. Instead of an open flame, we are using a radiant heat source to match the conditions of an engine bay.

    Next time you do a test, could you use a larger piece of metal? Because of how small your metal piece is, hot air is allowed to flow over it very easily...not giving it an accurate depiction of "sealed" heat dissipation capability/properties.

    The whole point of products like this is to reflect radiant heat though, isn't it? An IR source like a hot turbo and a thermocouple on the surface behind it would be a better test.

    Your heat source was at varying distances. The first eBay test you were close (4 threads back on the vice) second you were 7 threads back and 3rd you were 6 threads back.

      Hi Pete, that was a good catch. I went a measured the threads on the vice. They have a gap of approximately 3mm (little less). The heat gun gets to approximately 135*C at approximately 5cm on the exposed sensor. While I won't say that the change in distance is negligible, I suspect it would be the difference of less than 1*C over the period of this test. In the future, I will be releasing much more standardized tests, since so many people have been asking about it!

    A heat gun is convection heat transfer. The air is actually flowing over and around a panel that small. Although I do agree with the statement of it being a relatively accurate representation of an engine bay. The tape should reflect radiant heat but cannot do much in the way of conductive or convective heat transfer. Best way to figure out if the stuff works for you and your application is to try it out really. If you wrap your intake and you see your IAT temps rise slower when at a stop then it’s a win.

    That's a pretty lousy test. Got nothing to do with heat radiation. Try an infrared heat bulb instead.

    I'm attempting to understand the under hood conditions of vehicles. Reflective tape slows a metal intake from heating up to engine temperature more slowly than the not having it insulated at all. We can have closer to ambient air temperature a little longer, right? Wouldn't your reflective tape eventually heat up to engine bay temperature thus no longer be effective? The biggest thing in keeping an intake cool is the air coming into it. I'm not saying your wrap isn't worth it.

    looks like you are using different metal squares varying in size = different heat absorption. Try again with the same metal square.

    But what if i dont want gold color in my engine bay? can i then use silver?

    • @goldilocksautomotive1679

      Definitely! We prefer our White Gold Series (silver) because it looks more OEM. The difference between our Gold and White Gold is about 1%. Take a look our site: shop.goldilocksautomotive.com

    Now how about a radiant heat test rather than forced convection... 🤦‍♂️

    There is a big problem with this test, that is the measuring time. Under the bonnet the heat is there continuously during the trip, not only for 30 seconds. Your tape can transfer the heat slower than the others, but the ending temperature could be the same, just you need enough time. You should do this test for at least 10 minutes long to see if any tape is better than others. Although a trip could be much longer than that, let's start with 10 minutes. Most probably the difference between the 3 tapes would be marginal, if any at all. It's because the shiny golden surface suggests that this tape is designed mostly against thermal radiation, it will reflect the radiation. This is not a good heat insulation material, because it's very thin, flimsy. If you wanna insulate the heat you need much thick material, something fluffy puff. Do you know turbo blankets, or exhaust wraps? Those are heat insulations (fluffy puff winter coat), this is heat reflector (a mirror reflects infrared heat waves). Huge difference, and you can't test this with a heat gun, but with a heat radiator. Btw it works, it's not bad but this test is silly.

      Right! We are looking for the smallest change (which means more heat is reflected)

  • @Fosgen
    @Fosgen 5 років тому +1

    Radiant heat? Okay. Convection and conduction will still work in hot engine bay. Gold tape is often weak solution around hottest part of engine like exhaust manifold.

    • @goldilocksautomotive1679
      @goldilocksautomotive1679  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the comment. Our Elite Series Thermal Tape has the fibreglass layer to help with conduction. No solution will stop heat completely; we are just trying to keep things cooler, longer. As for exhaust manifolds, you should check out our video on our LAVA Rock Exhaust Wrap. The two of these paired together reduce under-hood temps significantly.

    How well would your tape stand up to sun/uv for years? Would like to wrap my ac unit on the roof but worried it would quickly be destroyed by the elements

    • @goldilocksautomotive1679
      @goldilocksautomotive1679  6 років тому +1

      Hey @anarchyamp, If you're looking to wrap an outdoor AC unit, I would recommend using our Elite Series White Gold, as it does not contain a polymide layer (just aluminum and fiberglass). Depending on your climate (if it gets really cold) you may see slight lifting over time. But the heat will not be a problem.

    Massive difference in the metal width between the DEI piece and the Elite product you are trying to sell here. The DEI peice of metal was considerably smaller you can see if you compare the metal in relation to the vice. Pointless test.

      Hi there, no that's not correct. Those pieces were cut out on top of each other in a stack, so they are going to be all within 0.5mm of each other.

    Saying it’s twice as effective while using a temperature scale in Celsius is misleading. You should really be using kelvin to make that kind of claim. Though I understand Celsius is easier for us to understand.

    The heat comes from the back side of the tape. You need to heat up the metal not the tape.

    • @goldilocksautomotive1679
      @goldilocksautomotive1679  5 років тому

      Hi Aldo, remember that the tape is on a surface that you want to keep cool, not a surface emitting the heat. It's a reflector with some insulation properties. Our LAVA Rock Exhaust Wrap is a more robust insulator.
