His charisma was tops. Track would be so much popular in the USA if he had lived

It is way more popular than it had been, Because of him and the independant track movement he started after the Olympics and before his unfortunate passing.

My dad was a national contender in the 800m in the early/mid-seventies. He ran a 1:51 800m in his prime multiple times…but the political state of the country kept him from competing. Interesting how things change…quickly.

12.58. I believe he could have achieved that time in the 5,000 metres between 1976 and 1978 regardless of his performance in Montreal. He would have been at his absolute peak during those years and because he was predominantly a front-runner, he could have done 'a David Moorcroft' years before Moorcroft and blitzed the 5k world record in a pillar-to-post performance.
Not long after this race, he competed in the 5,000 metres for the USA in the Pan American games in Colombia and won the gold medal.

There's no evidence to back that up - its the usual Prefontaine worship stuff.

I believe when he died in 1975 he was at just 13:21 so four years later he was nowhere near sub 13:00 for 5000. He may have plateaued somewhat.
