      After you listen to this album, please watch a video of "Supper's Ready" live. For Genesis, hearing it is only HALF the experience. You need to see how Peter Gabriel performed it. He used many costume changes for different songs and was very theatrical!

    Acoustic guitar is my fave of ALL instruments. Yeah, I love French horn, oboe, saxes, clarinets, piano, all basses, classical guitar, electric guitar, VIOLA, all strings, etc...
    I have been playing piano for 53 years, did pro French horn for decades, guitar off and on for decades, electric bass now and again, theremin (if I have one available) - these days loving trumpet - but, still...
    Acoustic guitar is totally the bomb!

    Yes had many personnel changes but this is my favorite lineup. Jon Anderson’s voice is like a musical instrument in itself. Chris Squire on bass. Steve Howe on guitar. Rick Wakeman on keyboards. Bill Bruford on drums and percussion. All masters.

    Nice reaction. I love that as one concentrates on each instrument and individual part for this song, guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums, it slowly dawns that each player is an absolute master for their instrument. These are Howe, Squire, Wakeman, and Bruford respectively. Then layer on Jon Anderson's superb vocals, blended with Squire's and Howe's!

You forget how great South Side of the Sky actually is when somebody picks it apart like her. Never ceases to amaze. I especially love when someone hears Squire for the 1st time. Yes was one of my primary early influences to learn how to play bass. Chris Squire was very masterful at musical and melodic bass lines. Round About was the most iconic bass riffs he had. I had the pleasure of seeing Yes in concert 3 times in the 70s and this was their traditional opening song. What a way to kick off show!... The 2nd song is a reference tot he classical composer Johanes Brahms which is why it both sounds like, and is structured like, a classical piece of music. As you might be able to tell from his playing the keyboard/synth guy (Rick Wakeman) was a classically trained pianist.

    Love your reaction to one of my favorite bands. Would you believe there was a time in this country that FM radio stations would play this and songs from that era complete and unedited? They would even play album sides. I know, because I was there in college back in the day. Now, let me make a comment as a retired drummer. Your ear is perceptive. The stick noises you hear are most likely from a Spanish instrument called Claves, which is exactly two sticks striking each other. The salt shaker you hear is indeed called a shaker. They come in different sizes for different effects. Dr. Bill Bruford, the drummer on this album, is a master at percussive effects. Keep going on your Yes Journey. So much fantastic music awaits you. Cheers from Chicago.

    YES is my favorite group. I subscribe to anyone who reacts to them because I want others to discover their great talent and the best Progressive rock music. My number one favorite is "The Gates of Delirium" with "Close to the Edge" an extremely close second. Studio versions only. It's pretty hard to reproduce those live. "Roundabout" is awesome too. They have loads of good songs. And their music is complex not the usually short songs. "Close to the Edge" is a masterpiece. On par with classical music like Beethoven. Every note is just right. The lyrics are mystical and spiritual with the interpretation up to the listener like a Picasso painting. A couple of others include "Turn of the Century ', 'Starship Trooper" "The Revealing Science of God" - live version from The Keys to Ascension album is another great one. One of my favorite live ones is "Awaken" : ua-cam.com/video/nDXccU0xgNo/v-deo.html . Keep the YES music coming!!

When you hear his voice it is instantly recognizable to only him! Bill Bruford's drums on this album are also so f'ing SICK! He has an unmistakable sound, when you hear him, you know it's Bruford. I love watching Yoiu Tubers reacting to Yes for the 1st time. Welcome to complex, astounding, actual MUISIC, by a group of guys who are each virtuoso on their instruments. Roundabout is used in the Jo Jo’s Adventure Meme which is why it sounds familiar to you.
    The short individual tracks were used to fill in the running time because this was the second album that they made in 1971. The next album after Fragile is Close To The Edge which is always in the top five best Progressive Albums of all time lists. Yes are still touring now ( with some different members) and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

    Physical ecstasy, better than drugs, that's what music is to me. I grew up on "Yes" and - to some extent - I modeled my physical style and my study of music after them. I graduated with a degree in Music Therapy & pursued the study of Early Music in London. Eventually, I made my living as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse specializing in psychiatry, drug & alcohol dependence. But post-Beatles Prog Rock has never left my head or heart ... precisely because it is so interesting & entertaining! When first it came to fruition, Prog Rock wasn't considered to be much more than musical mastrubation - an overindulgence of instrumentalist musicians, but to those who held it in high intellectual and emotional esteem it was our world - the soundtrack of our lives, our generation. These were accomplished musicians expressing their creative art.~ I was 21 then, I'm 67 now. It's so nice to see someone so young, get so joyous a spiritual high off of this music! It warms my heart. :) Stay curious, keep exploring. We learn about our world, and ourselves along the way.

    Now this is a nice choice! Great job! Jon Anderson has a voice of an angel. My absolute favorite band and singer from the progressive rock area. Please do yourself a favor and listen to their next album called Close To the Edge. Equally good, and in some peoples opinion, mine included, better than Fragile.

    • @TTM9691
      @TTM9691 2 роки тому +2

      Not mine! They peaked with "Fragile", as far as I'm concerned. "Close To The Edge' is ok, but it's easy to see why Bruford left - too many cooks. "Fragile" is perfection from beginning to end and - along with "Who's Next" and "Led Zeppelin IV" - is THE ultimate '71 rock album.

    • @TTM9691
      @TTM9691 2 роки тому +2

      @Bookhouse Boy That's THAT quote. Elsewhere he's complained that they d everyone's ideas were given equal weight and that the album was recorded in short increments, and made up as they went along. Which is exactly what it always sounded like to me. Frankly, I think Tull and Genesis do the side-long suite way better than Yes, who always come off sounding "random" (post-Fragile).

    • @TTM9691
      @TTM9691 2 роки тому

      @Bookhouse Boy Please don't give me a lecture about the creation of boring, bloated, tedious "Close To The Edge". I know how it was written and recorded, and for prog rock, I don't give it high marks in terms of composition. Period. You fall for that, all the more power to you. I require more than random splices. As far as comparing "Supper's Ready" and "Close To The Edge".....the fact of the matter is all of those sections in "Supper's Ready" are great songs unto themselves, whereas "Close To The Edge" can barely muster up a single memorable hook (and the one that it does have is annoying beyond all words). Yes fans jerk themselves off to "Close To The Edge". PS: Bruford left Yes because Crimson was the more interesting band. He didn't want to sit there and do edits all day, he wanted interplay. And absolutely, I'll take ANY of the three Crimson albums he did in the 70s over "Close To The Edge".

    Awesome! "Roundabout" is a masterpiece. It's been one of my favorite songs ever since I first heard it as a kid back in the seventies. That bass line. Those drums. The organ runs. The change ups and the turnarounds. The guitar flourishes. And the harmonized tip of the hat to "Carry On" by Crosby, Stills and Nash at the end before the final classical guitar lick. WOW! If you watch anime, various snippets of "Roundabout" were used as the ending theme song for the first season of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime series back in 2012. Even if you don't, the "To Be Continued" insert at the end of those shows was apparently turned into an internet meme that also used the song. I used to listen to Fragile all the time when I was twelve or thirteen back in '79. Fragile and Rush 2112 and ELP Brain Salad Surgery, often all three of them one after the other, records stacked for autoplay. Fragile was the record I played when my parents complained that I was playing Black Sabbath or The Rolling Stones too loud. [grin] And what a great album cover too. Time to explore the imagination!

    Since I saw your reaction to the first Led Zeppelin album, I've been looking forward to your reaction to this (& a couple other) YES albums. Led Zeppelin & YES hit the rock music scene about the same time & they turned out to be 2 of the all-time best bands _ever._ As great as Led Zeppelin was, I have to give the title of Best [Progressive] Rock Band ever to YES.
    If you take their 3 classic Masterpieces, *The Yes Album, Fragile, & Close To The Edge* & match them up with the 3 best albums of any other band, YES stands out as the best, in my opinion. The first of these 3 albums was The Yes Album, which I consider tied with Fragile as the 2nd Best YES album, exceeded only by the 3rd of these, Close To The Edge, which is the best Progressive Rock Album ever recorded. I hope you'll be listening to The Yes Album next in your journey through YES' catalog before tasting the rarest of fruit that is Close To The Edge.
    In my opinion, THE *key* to YES' amazing musical creations was the bassist, Chris Squire, who absolutely dominated their early sound with his Industrial-Melodic inspirations. The rest of the band realized how important it was that they build their sound around Chris' lead. IMO, beginning with The Yes Album, the band could have appropriately marketed themselves as "YES: featuring Chris Squire on bass." That's how masterfully he dominated their sound during their Classic Period.
    He not only got this amazing growl out of his instrument, but he added a lot of melody to their songs, even while sustaining the bottom-end groove. I think Squire's bass playing is the single most appealing thing I always loved about YES as a Progressive Rock band, and there was _a lot_ to like about all of the tremendous contributions made by the other musicians in the band. It made them stand out in the musical universe.
    YES' target audience was first & foremost _other musicians_ which is apparent when you notice the incredible amount of _complexity_ they packed into their masterpieces. Every musician makes his contributions, adding innovative/experimental layers, but instead of just being a bunch of noise, they blended it all together in an extremely pleasing way. That complexity is why you can listen to their creations dozens of times & still hear something you missed before.
    On top of all that complexity was YES' emphasis on melody & vocal harmonies, an important part of their creations that appealed to the ears of pop music fans. Jon Anderson's voice was unique, but it was accentuated by Chris Squire's high range harmonies blended in. Jazz drummer Bill Bruford's experimental approach perfectly complimented Squire's dominating bass lines. Together, they formed Progressive Rock's best "Rhythm Section" if you can call it that.
    After you've listened to the 3 sensational classic albums, you'll want to check out a cover tune called *America* that was essentially a concert jam they'd been playing at around the same time as the classic studio albums. Enjoy your YES journey! I know they're going to blow you away! :)

    Verdy lovely reaction. Yes are the best. The lyrics are used like an instrument and build in a poetic and metaphorical way and a little to interpretation. But like in Roundabout it’s about being in tour and longing for returning to his wife and to see her again and is describing the beauty of the views of the mountains and haze while they were traveling in Scotland. South side of the sky it’s about mountain climbing, as we climb mountains every day, and reaching to the top represents the end of this life -because eventually dies- and transition to the next one. And you are right, In Roundabout in the middle percussion Bill Bruford uses milk bottles filled with water at different levels to achieve different tones. And in a sad note, Alan White, the drummer who eventually changed after Bruford left the band has just passed away. Thx. 👍💪
