    I honestly could care less if a Labrador was silver, charcoal, red, white, etc. As long as the dog is happy, healthy, friendly, well behaved, loves water, and is overall a good dog, I could care less if that dog had 2% Weimaraner in them. I don’t care if it’s a diluted black gene to create a charcoal lab or a diluted chocolate gene to create a silver lab they’re all beautiful to me! I wouldn’t mind having a charcoal or silver lab as long as they’re healthy!

      Although my opinions on silver/charcoal labs has changed a bit since making this comment. I’m not completely against them, but I don’t support breeders that specifically breeds for silvers because it’s not an approved color. If a reputable breeder accidentally had a litter with a few silver labs in it without knowing their dogs carried the dilute gene- I don’t mind giving that silver puppy a good home. But, I don’t agree with breeders purposefully breeding for an off-standard color and marketing them as “unique” or “designer” and charging twice the amount of a “normal” Labrador.

I've had Yellow labs for 25 yrs and got my first (white) diluted yellow 6 months ago....excellent dog, very trainable but there is a definite difference in her drive to retrieve and her stamina. I know this is a video about charcoal labs but I found the comparisons between field and bench labs incredibly helpful. My previous dog was a lab who I adopted from a shelter. He was my first lab so I wasn’t sure where he lay on the lab energy spectrum (he had a broad chest but was lean in the back). He was athletic, agile, with a superb sense of balance, responsive to my body language, tone of voice and excitement so I guess he was more field than bench. He adored being in water and retrieving, so it was pretty easy to keep him happy even though I’m more like a bench lab myself.
    Thanks for this video. I feel like I have a better idea of what I’m looking for. Will be watching your other videos to catch up.

    I think my black lab mix female had a parent who was a dilute. She has the exact same slightly longer and courser coat as the dilute and exact facial structure. She also fits right in the middle between the ‘American’ and ‘British’ lab body wise. We rescued her so she may have been abandoned because of those inconsistencies.

      I once had a "field bred dog" that was mellow about retrieving and first experience with ice and she was like NO WAY. But that was one of the ten total I have worked with. So as a generality bench bread won't hang with field bread but its not surprising that you can get one that runs counter to form.

      It has to do with breeding temperament . Show dogs ( English ) are bred to behave and perform in the ring. Every puppy has a different personality and even in a hunting breed ( American ) you can get some lazy chill puppies. They just don’t usually have the drive so they don’t get bred as often because they won’t hunt so there isn’t a demand for them in hunting country . They all have the same background . It’s happening with humans . Lazy people are having more kids than more driven people wrapped up in their careers. Just think if people were bred like hunting lines...... Things were way different when these dogs were originated.

    Stonnie I watched your videos before getting my first dog ever back in 2014, I was a very early subscriber to the channel so I respect you greatly. Please look into the dilute gene (dd). This gene is absent from all labradors, but appears universally in Weinmaraner. I don't blame any of the dogs. I don't believe the dilute gene is the best for the breed and should not be bred. Like so many of your videos you speak to how all breeds and all breed variations are trainable. In this video you showed this again, but on whats best for the (dd) gene is not what is best for the Labrador Retriever.

The trainer said to me to stop giving treats (he gets part of his food, sometimes chicken) the thing is he is very food motivated.. I think there is no harm in rewarding good behavior,until he gets it.. What do you think about that?

    • @StonnieDennis
      @StonnieDennis  4 роки тому +8

      You can reward your dog for as long as you like! I still reward dogs that are well into their teens; it's fun for me and for them. Your pup needs enough physically and mentally demanding activities to promote proper development. Exercise reveals problems, that's why so many breeders are anti exercise with young dogs. In general I would say that people who don't engage in physically and mentally demanding activities themselves have a hard time understanding what is or is not an appropriate level of exercise for puppies. Look how much the dogs on my channel run and play; that pretty much tells you what you need to know!

    Yeah, Stonnie - I tend to be owned by Black Labs, too. 😄 I think the Charcoal Lab equates to Blue in Great Danes and Pitbulls, and with other critters it's been known that you need Black to make Blue... rats, chickens, cats, etc. I find myself drawn to a Chocolate Lab if they're "semi-sweet chocolate"... the "milk-chocolate" not so much. The "white Lab" is more of a cremello-color... still yellow, just real pale. The "fox-reds" are still blonde dogs - just strawberry-blonde... just a tone of Yellow. Since there's this variation in yellows and chocolates - why are some folks so resistant to variations in black?? Don't make a lotta sense to me!

      My mastador has bountiful energy outside and can fetch all day long! We have to hide his fetch balls in the house or you'll be tossing the ball all day and night. But when his tennis balls are put up, he'll lay on the couch beside you all day.

    I have pick of the litter and my favorite two pups are a black and a silver , I’m an avid waterfowler and was wondering if the coat problems associated with silvers will be in the black? Also can the issues cause problems during winter while swimming? Not a big fan of silvers but I’ve hunted over both parents and both are great retrievers. ( yellow mom and silver dad) the dad is only 3 and hasn’t had any coat issues yet and minor allergies.

    Stonnie,
    Quick question. What do you do with a food hungry bench lab. My English will wait until released to eat and wait to take food until told. But if you randomly walk near him and he wants it especially with my kids he will go for it. He also takes treats and rewards very ruff sometimes. He is very very food orientated. What are some of your techniques with this behavior? He will literally drool and lick his lips in a stay until released for food. Boy does he salivate.

      My Eng Lab is a very good guard dog on our farm, He acts all scary and mean but when I come around and open the gate he is a big cozy bear 😄Most of the labs are only happy to see people thoe😅

    • @emmamemma4162
      @emmamemma4162 5 років тому +1

      Way too friendly, they also tend not to bark. On the other hand, some people are afraid of all dogs while others will just whip out some dog treats and sweet talk themselves past your GSD or Doberman right into your house.

      Nah. As others have said, Labs are way too friendly for guard dogs. They are perfect in every way and are one of the most versatile dogs out there, but they would 100% make friends with a criminal trying to break in. 🤣

    • @nonehpets
      @nonehpets 5 років тому

      I have a pointerdor - he is great; work ethic of a german shorthair and biddable as a Lab. Learn about both breeds and be prepared to adjust your training to the predominant characteristics in your dog - for example Springers have a tendency to go self employed compared to Labs who like to be round their handler. When you know which your pup exhibits adjust how you work with them.

    What I like to tell my students is "Train the dog in front of you" meaning that every dog is different and not to expect the same thing from a chubby as you do a field lab, nor would you train and expect the same thing from a black Newfoundland as you would a Landseer Newfoundland.
