I think the main problem and backlash is that the netflix show take these bonds between the characters for granted. They think they can skip all of the build up and that wont work. Yennefer betraying Ciri is also out of character in the most extreme way I've ever seen.

@Rev ٖ You can't say that there is no backlash. And I'm not hating on the show, I actually liked most of it. But there is a fair amount of critisism as a book adaptation that has been voiced by many. Just do a quick search for reviews and you will see for yourself. No hate, just some things that were porly adapted.

It’s unfortunate that we have the most perfect actors possible for these roles yet the writing is lacking. I'm a defender of the show and I have to agree with you. The pacing of relationship development was overlooked for a plot that wasn't quite hooked in right in season 2. If either had happened I'd be on my high horse, but it didn't work well enough. The ambition of season 1 that infuriated people with "Oh what I have to actually look for clues and pay attention to figure out what is going on?" was fine with me because it was an artistic and ambitious choice that elevated the narrative style of the original author's short stories and in fact honored the tradition of fairy tales and short stories generally with it's form. But season 2 attempted an A plot B plot structure and the creativity as it were was lashed to the mast of a storm it couldn't survive.

It's really unfortunate the show didn't adapt the bonding moments in the books, it's one of my favorite chapters. It humanized Yen a bit, but in the show, it just feels like they want to deconstruct her. It's sad we won't get a proper adaptation, it really is.

I'm curious to see how the dynamic between Yennefer and Ciri plays out as they completely change their personalities, making Yen more childish and Ciri much more mature than the child she is in the books.

@@LNER985 book fans know she only picked the witcher for the Ciri-Mistle relationship from ToC and BoF. And instead of portraying Mistle as Ciri's abuser, they will make them a normal lesbian relationship.
As for Yennefer in the show. People defend her because after sacrificing Ciri she kinda sacrificed herself to save her. However this still does not help build trust and create a mother daughter relationship. Yen was just pulling Ciri out of the mess she made. This gives Ciri no reason to like Yennefer as all she did was put her and her friends in danger and filled her with guilt for killing witchers. What show defenders miss is that even if Ciri forgives Yen "if" that's even possible, the wirters still butchered their relationship. In the books none of that Baba Yaga nonsense happened. Yennefer trains Ciri (properly not those stupid "fuck" spells) in Nenneke's temple and we get to see Ciri open up to Yennefer:
Ciri tells her she's afraid of another war which would lead to ber losing everyone she cares for and ending up alone and on the run. Ciri even calls Yen mama at some point.

Show don't tell. You are trying to explain us what was going on on the screen, but you showed us something completely different. That's one of many reasons why I am not going to watch 3rd season.

I'm so glad I haven't read the books yet (though I'm currently playing the games so I have a bit of an idea how Yennefer feels about Ciri).
I understand where the fans are coming from. It's hard to have set expectations and not see them met. But I kinda like how things have progressed so far. Yennefer attempting to sacrifice Ciri to regain her power only served to reaffirm her personality and highlight her weaknesses, her flaws and her priorities.
Now, turning back from all of that and putting someone else's welfare above her own over and over again? That would be a complete reversal of all her past efforts - of advancing her own agenda at other people's cost. Do you have any idea how impactful that would be?
What happened in season 2 was a brilliant touch because it will serve to accentuate Yennefer's growth, of how Ciri and Geralt will help her bloom into a version of herself that she never thought existed.

Wait untill Geralt meets Vilgefortz combat capabilities, he will never call Yennefer the most powerful. I dont want to spoil it but he is so powerful that the Lounge is afraid of him.

    • @DarkZerol

Because the actors are way too young. Obviously the entertainment industry would generally much rather cast young and attractive people. Everyone looks way too young and beautiful if you compare it to the source material.

@@DarkZerol seen lots of good actors portray age characters internally, look at April Bowby in Doom Patrol with her Rita who must be in her late 90's

The mother/daughter relationship is so messed up and badly written. The casting doesn't help, with only 5 years between the two actresses. Anya Chalotra has more of a head for being a mean older sister.

Yennefer is about 70 years old in the series so she has a big age difference to Ciri. She will always look very young. E.g. in the book "sword of destiny" in the short story "The Bounds of Reason" it is described that due to her transformation she has the body of a sixteen year old. So actually CD Project Red made a mistake because Yennefer looks way too old in Witcher 3.

Saying "like" is a filler word for many people, majority of which are women, use when their train of thought isn't yet completed. Men tend to use "um" as a filler word. It's totally normal when you stutter or aren't very good when it comes to thinking on the spot.

Off topic, but look at the Freya's left eyebrow in the interview - why so many women have eyebrows like this, ALWAYS with LEFT ONE kind of disheveled on the inner side???
