  • In his black belt worlds debut, Nova Uniao star Leonardo Santos, faces off against defending champion Royler Gracie. The match ended with Royler winning on an advantage, much to the dismay of the crowd and was regarded as a very controversial call. What did you think of the decision?
    Royler Gracie is the son of Gracie jiu jitsu Grandmaster Helio Gracie and a legend in jiu jitsu and submission wrestling of his own merit, having been the first “King of BJJ’s Featherweight Division” setting the record of world championships at the time. Royler Gracie also ventured in mixed martial arts (MMA) ending his career in 2006, and excelled as a coach, leading the Gracie Humaitá academy in Rio de Janeiro, developing fighters like “Megaton” Dias, Alexandre Ribeiro, Omar Salum, Renato Barreto and many others. In 2010 Royler moved to San Diego, California (USA) where he opened his own academy.
    Leonardo Santos is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt from the Nova Uniao team, being one of the most important fighters for BJJ in the early 2000s. With numerous titles in his grappling career, Leo Santos was regarded by many as the best lightweight fighter of his generation, having victories over several great fighters such as Leo Vieira and Tiago Alves amongst many others. in 2006 Leo Santos ended his career with the kimono to follow his brother’s footsteps (Wagnney Fabiano) towards MMA fighter, and in 2013 Leonardo Santos was part of the cast of the TUF Brazil 2 reality show, a program produced by the UFC with the intention of seeking high-end Mixed Martial Arts talent in the South American country.
