It is 2019 now and during the past 7 years, which is when this video was uploaded, more and more things he said became true. We pretty much created an alternative world called the internet, which is invisible to our eyes and yet is even more important than reality in some parts of our life. Everything will be connected together at some point in time because it simplfies our lifes and takes work off our shoulders. But this comfort is not free, nor do we fully understand the consequences this will have: We become dependent on it.
Depending on something makes us vulnerable, just imagine a doctor who has to look up the steps to perform a surgery because they are too complicated to remember: If for some reason the information is gone or the internet is unavailable, we are completely unable to continue the lives we lived with the IOT. Comfort will become neccessity in the future and therefore a big weakness and risk for our lives.

A doctor should always refer to their textbooks before performing a task. That’s what good doctors do. 😐

We have a choice fight it or master it. If you want to know what is the likely result of either choice, just look at the many times we - people - faced this choice. See what happened to those who fought technology and those who decided to master it. Those who fear live in fear. Those who master fear - leverage their future.

Fascinating, but very scary too. It's hacky to say it, but we're living in '1984' and this will only make things far more invasive. And we're doing it to ourselves, completely willingly, because of 'convenience'. This isn't 'tinfoil hat' speculation - this is all very real. I recommend watching private investigator Steven Rambam's talks at the HOPE conventions, just in case you're not convinced.

Internet of Things is the ultimate concept we have today for improvements. It will not only improve our life style, but can also be used with nature, industry, science and daily routine office activities. this "thing" is another big step for a new reality.

Very interesting, Dr. John made this topic very smooth we all can tell he is passionate about it. However this reminds me to the Jhonny Deep movie, "Trascender", watch it. I just hope the ads can be avoided and that we can still select our privacy settings, and most of all, every time my health insurance increases that my salary increases too!

This is a very revolutionary concept and a great presentation! This "internet of things" is a manifestation of the true interconnection of the world and maybe even the universe! I just pray that when we fully jump to this "internet of things" lifestyle, we will also make the jump to a communist type hybrid of capitalism at least. I would be disgusted if I had an increase of life insurance expense at the very moment I need medical attention. I've already noticed personalized advertising through my iphone and laptop recently. Hopefully, by then, there will be a new form of currency too...

Good presentation, technology can be used both to liberate or to enslave, depends who wields societal power, all concerned or the elite. Bentham's Panopticon is a good example, people radically alter behavior if they think they're being observed, that's a well documented fact.

At least when Kung Fu flicks are overdubbed with english, they still sound like they're in the right environment. And why would you need to overdub a lecture that was already recorded?

Borg is a collective proper noun for a fictional alien race that appears as recurring antagonists in various incarnations of the Star Trek franchise. The Borg is a collection of species that have been turned into cybernetic organisms functioning as drones of the Collective, or the hive. A pseudo-race, dwelling in the Star Trek universe, the Borg force other species into their collective and connect them to "the hive mind"; the act is called assimilation and entails violence, abductions, and injections of microscopic machines called nanoprobes. The Borg's ultimate goal is "achieving perfection".
Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

The Internet of things is cool. It is what we want for social needs, food, shelter, health, in a ressource based economy as defined by the Zeitgeist movement, TZM. But we need to talk about access, who will get the life enhancing devices? If you think everyone, think again. There needs to be a solution that will give provide access to those things, independently of your economic value. Because this one will be shrinking, just as the number of devices connected to the Internet will increase. Sometimes providing stuff is not everything, if people can't afford it. Think about that, you ultra capitalism people who still think, today, 2015, that money will solve all our issues. Please stop dream and wake up to our sad reality.

You want your washing machine or dryer to go on when energy is cheap. At the moment cheap imports of goods are making things catch fire so yes your house might be warmer and you washing dry when you are 10 miles from home, because your house may be on fire. Your Car might be more efficient because the car company has the ability to look at your car whilst you are driving and make an appointment to repair but your auto driver assist car might not negotiate the corner because your car CPU is melting sending out viruses/malware to the rest of the world. Let us use our eyes and ears to check if we need something fixed. My Car still drives, my washing/drying still gets done and I do not need my heating on 10 minutes before I get home - just leave your jumper on till it warms up.
