Any questions? Feel free to get in touch at the thebrassteacher.co.uk! :)
your teaching style of buzzing can work on a trumpet too?
Yes absolutely! :)
Hiya! Oh no! Right, start off with that loose raspberry and then gradually tighten your lips from there :) I've also got some new beginner videos too!
Hi, I'm a return player and the detail about pulling down the corners of the lips made all the difference. I remembered and looked it up, it's in the Arban's book. Thank you
Hi, I am from slovakia, amateur brass music, and you have very good technic. Before koncert I was trying doing something like this, and help me. very low tones too helping me.
Quick, SIMPLE, and Understandable...that's the way the good teachers, teach.
Unfortunately this is the only tutorial on the channel.
After watching this, I was looking forward to the next lesson.
Good video.
There will be MORE intrepidro don't you worry! Watch this space...
New video are up NOW intrepidro! Go check em out and let me know what you think :)
the only thing that happened is that I now have to clean my monitor
XD
lol
Lol
😂😂😁😂😂
Jeez, dude, she wasn't THAT hot.
Can you use strawberries if you don't have any fresh raspberries?
so long as they are organic Andy, that is no problem :) Have a look at our new magazine on Flipboard flipboard.com/@bekiadams1/the-brass-teacher-phkior8iy

I wish this had been taught to me in 1959 when I encountered my first brass instrument, an Eb mellophone. I did OK with it, but next year when I got a French horn, I could have gotten some instruction. I got by on luck and hitting some note on the upbeats -- pah to tuba's ump. I survived, but I had to surrender my horn right before high school graduation in 1962. I just got a cornet on eBay and faith, but because of this I find it easier to play than the old horn. I do miss the Eb, though. The mouthpiece was the most comfortable of them all. So thanks to you, and to UA-cam.
I will find an instructor sometime, but I am having fun alone.
Question: How do I know if I wouldn't do better with another mouthpiece? And how would I know how to choose one?
(PS: the cornet, an Olds Ambassador, was made in -- magic year -- 1962. The mouthpiece just says "Olds." Must be the original. ) Thanks. P
Hiya! Oh wow I love this comment, great to hear you're still going with it, it is a hard instrument and buzzing can be tricky on any brass instrument too! A way you can tell if your mouthpiece is too large is if you have a trouble 'filling' it with your lips. If it feels too cavernous, then it probably is!
And the way to tell if your mouthpiece is too small, is if your embrochure and lips are spilling out the sides. If you practice in front of the mirror this helps to determine if your mouthpiece is too small or large. Thanks for watching! :)
Thanks for the encouragement. I had experienced the spilling from the sides of the mouth last week, but adjusted my mouth to more of a frown while trying to relax into the tone, so that stopped. I had a good practice yesterday with none of that, so the mouthpiece (and its history) stays.
Thanks again.
You are my inspiration to keep trying. Thank you, Mr Peter Casanave!
@@elumarsouza337 Souza! What a great name for a brass player.
@@PeterACasanave Thank you my friend. I hope you and your loved ones are doing well in these difficult times.
My brass teacher was a big ol' round sweaty dude -- Why, oh why couldn't I have been lucky to have had this princess of a teacher?
The lower lip tip was the most useful bit of the video. Thanks!
i needed to have it done in less than 24 hours and you helped me in less than two mins thank
Awesome, well done! Glad to have helped :)
Make sure you dont buzz too much ( like 45 mins to an hour) because it'll mesd you up for a while.
Yes definitely Windy, I wouldn't recommend you spend more than 10 mins warming up on the mouthpiece once you're off playing :)
Best buzz I have had all day! Thank you 🏆🙈
You’re welcome 😊
Awesome! Picked up a bugle cheap and waiting for the mouthpiece I ordered...I'll practice my refining my raspberry in the meantime.
Awesome video thank you! You are really helping my beginning band students. The goal is to make learning fun!
Hey Jason, thanks for watching! Yes making music fun is the most important part! :)
this is totally the easiest method to understand it! I've been trying other UA-cam instructions but this one nails it best! cheers!
Yay!! In so glad you found it useful!! Have fun playing!
If we were in the same room I would give you a hug because you explain your lessons very well.
Thank you for watching! Glad you found it useful :)
I have been looking ALL over youtube and this is the first video that taught me how to blow. THX
Excellent! I'm so glad you found it useful!
Ah I just started a week ago on focusing on my buzz but I feel like I haven’t progress and I just keep coming back to these videos 😂
You got this! Keep up the good work!
OMG! Thank you! This was the missing piece to me learning how to play a trumpet!
Nice! Glad I could help you :)
I think I'm in love with Becky! When I was a brass major at North Texas State, we still had folks (at the collegiate level) who still didn't understand the difference between airflow and buzz. Funny lady tackling a serious subject.
Haha thanks for watching Big Al, glad to have helped :)
I like the fast paced energy lol. You made it very entertaining and engaging
I appreciate that!
you are so funny and a great teacher! Thank you!
Aw thank you so much! I'm glad that I helped you :)
I really loved the way you taught! Now, I "am" buzzing like a pro! Thanks to you!!😊💖
this was so funny, I learnt how to buzz now
Awesome!
Do you have any tips for changing the pitch while buzzing, I am learning the trombone for a musical, and our director wishes us to play a song using just a mouthpiece. How do you change the pitch while buzzing?
Hiya Hanzie, thanks for watching! To change the pitch of your buzz, you can tighten your lips to get a higher sound and loosen them to a more natural state for lower pitches :)
The raspberry to buzz was like the brass player's THX sound!
Il tutorial migliore!!! Ci sono riuscito dopo soli 5 minuti. Brava!
after a quick google translate....
Sono contento che ti sia piaciuto il video e sono stato in grado di ronzare dopo 5 minuti, ben fatto!
Many great brass players cannot buzz their lips: Michael Höltzel and Tine Thing-Helseth for example. The reason that they can still play phenomenaly is because buzzing the lips does not activate the standing wave in the instrument, and it is actually the vibration in the instrument that causes the lips to buzz. Any conscious effort on part of the player to buzz the lips is an isometric exercise and uses muscle and energy not necessary in playing the instrument. I‘m sure it can be a useful tool for learning away from the instrument, but never forget that much more muscle/energy is needed to force a buzz than needed when playing the instrument. There are some very good demonstrations available on the internet that illustrate this principle, and understanding this makes playing and note attacks so much more relaxing!!
Ty . Love your energy
.
Thanks that was more helpful than the hour long training
Good!! This is what I like to hear
Thank you for the video!
Oh, thank you! It helps me alot )
thanks for teaching me how to buzz in a uncomplicated way
You're so welcome! Happy Playing!
Is there something wrong with my lips or teeth? I am practicing for two days and can't keep a constant buzz, it's a mixture of everything haha
Hiya! There's nothing wrong with your lips I'm sure! Start with a big raspberry then try to make your lips tighter gradually- take it slowly! :) Check out my new videos too! :)
You might have stroke symptoms! Time for a CAT scan and arteriogram.
Amazing video keep up the great work
Thank you! :)
you should have more subs you should also be my tutor your awesome thanks for helping me with buzzing out of everyone i've seen on youtube for buzzing your the best.
Haha aw thank you! You are too kind :) Keep on playing!
New videos are up now! :)
I’m still struggling with step one 😂
For some reason my lips just dont want to do that. This may take longer to learn than I thought 😅
I laughed soooo hard when you used the raspberries on the mouth piece
Thank you for the lesson.
You're welcome :)
Love the Grouper fish !!!
Its a good way to think about it I think :)
Hello Ms. Brass teacher. Can do do these videos for all brass? Especially trombone and tuba.
Aw I would love to! At the moment I have relocated to Thailand, so videos won't be available for a few months. But I will consider it for the future! Enjoy your playing! ^ ^
Thank you, it really helped :)
You're so welcome :)
Thanks for this very helpful video. It’s encouraged me to keep developing my buzzing. Good point at the end about reminding us to take a good breath at the start.
Presumably we start the buzz here by tonguing, not an air breath - does it matter at this level? Peter
Im watching this as a euphonium player that been playing for 5 and a half years as a brass player to increase my range
Well this really helped, I went from just making air sound to getting a full range without even pressing any valves, amazing! (PS: I'm on a plastic instrument with a silicone mouthpiece, but hey it still worked)
Thanks excellent
Thanks. Very nice.
You're very welcome :)
Excellent
I planned, I organized, I struggled to find the best method, I struggled and the result is a coincidence ! 🤔🤕👍🌹💐🌹😁🖐️

thanks this helped alot
Glad it helped!
Already subscribed! I've been playing guitar for about 17 years and really have been fed up with it, so I picked up a trumpet at the age of 32. Some say, it's a waste of time after a certain age, do you think it's true? I also have another one, I have tried buzzing like this without the mouthpiece, but when my lips start buzzing I feel like my tongue gets involved like it is supporting the buzz motion. Is this wrong? I can't take private lessons these days so that's why I'm asking here :)
Hi Osmangil, great thank you for subscribing there will be more videos around December time (apologies for delay) but in the meantime, keep updated on all things brass on my blog at thebrassteacher.co.uk/resources
Its never too late to learn, you have totally made the right choice! Tongue getting involved is no problem, that's actually the next stage really, as you use the tongue to distinguish the indivdual notes *imagine your tongue is cutting your air flow into neat little parcels, these parcels are the notes!*
I have a friend who is an excellent brass player who has always used her tongue when she buzzes, and she does just great! If it sounds good and doesn't feel painful then you're probably doing it right! :)
You should do a tutorial that deals with the tuba.
love your video
Yay I'm so glad :) Thank you for watching :)
I have just bought my first trumpet two days ago lol. I am can make a sound out of it, but the buzz is hard though i am getting there. Any tips for me to do it and what is the best trumpet method book to use? I have used method books for guitar, drums and piano and they work, at least for me. Thanks for the the video.
Is buzzing the same with cuivre? I don't see buzzing in academic books. To me buzzing is cuivre where the instrument produce harder attack and make the instrument vibrate its body. Is that right?
Perfect
You are the best teacher🌹
So cute !
What do you do when all that happens is your upper lip fills with air? Raspberry or buzz attempt, my upper lip fills with air and no buzz happens
try to reposition the mouthpiece more equally 50 50 on top and bottom lip. It may be that your top lip isn't fully on the mouthpiece enough. Good luck!
oh thank you!!!!!
Thank you for this, I shared the video with 2 learners and a tremendous difference at the next practice, a great resource thank you so much.
Excellent! I'm so happy you found it useful and are using it at practice!
thoughts on trying to switch from tuba to horn:
• why no noise???
• ok theres noise but why lips numb?
• can i beatbox on this too?
• oh god....treble clef....
and yes, these are in order
haha yep, good luck with that! Your lips will be numb because of the huge shift in mouthpiece size from Tuba to Tenor horn, don't worry! You'll get used to it, or if you have larger lips, tuba may well be better suited to you :)
好 视频 good
Thank you
Thanks for this, Im learning Bugle so I guess its the same embouchure and buzzing. This was easy to follow and well made. Does anyone have any links to Bb Bugle Lessons?
Hi Accordionstu thanks for the comment! Yes it'll work for bugle no problem :) I don't have any links to bugle lessons but perhaps search for soprano cornet techniques- this might help you! Good idea for a video actually!
Compliments for your channel
Thank you!
One of the few vids i found successfull
Hi Numair, glad you liked it! :)
Hey I've recently got into jazz and want to get into the trumpet. Do you know any good site for beginners? Like what trumpet shal I get etc? Is it possible to learn online? Or do you know any teachers in the Bradfords area? Any help is appreciated, thanks Sam.
Hi Sam! thanks for getting in touch! pop to thebrassteacher.co.uk/resources where I've got buying guides for all sorts of things brass related, included a beginner trumpet guide!
Teacher wise- get looking on music teachers.co.uk, gun tree can be good, lots of directories to look online!
if you wanna get into jazz, start by picking a few set notes on your chosen instrument and playing around with them! different rhythms and combinations, and before you know it- you're improvising! which is a huge part of jazz.
listen to players like Louis Armstrong, count bassie and a lovely guy called Jiggs wigham for ideas!
Have fun and don't forget to subscribe! :)
Thank you very much for the reply, I will definitely get searching for a trumpet. Thanks, Sam

The videos are now UP!
funny but helpful 👍
That was great, very informative!
Hi Becky
Nice video. Will this approach be good for all trumpetplaying, both low and high?
I would like to change my embouchure trying to make things better and stop pressing so much . What du you Think of that idea ? I have played for a lot of years but never been able to play relaxed and bigband charts that I like.
Sincerely. Erik
Hi Erik, thanks for your comment! Yes it will work for all brass players including trumpeters! If you're finding it difficult to stop pressing so much, remember that the power comes from your breath and your diaphram. When you concentrate on breathing more you'll notice yourself pressing less... happy playing!
The Brass Teacher
Hi again.
I'll stick into it. Thanks for your advice👍
THANK YOU
You're welcome :)
i started two months ago, i can even play the beginner songs without mistake, but i still cant buzz my lips. what am i doing wrong?
Get back on the mouthpiece, back to basics. Long tones on the mouthpiece, take off lips and repeat. Make sure your lips are 'escaping' air at the corners and keep those corners down.
@@TheBrassTeacher Thank you!
Isn't your mouthpiece a bit bigger than a usual French Horn mouthpiece?
Yes! So I originally started on Tenor horn when I was 7 and picked up French horn when I was around 13 years old. Because I was used to a bigger mouthpiece I eventually got a yamaha mouthpiece with a detachable rim :)
Ok, now I love you!
thanks for enjoying the video Carlos!
You gave a great explanation. I just can't relax the center of my mouth yet so I'm not buzzing but farting loudly. Is a little more difficult than I thought.
This is the clearest explanation of buzzing
Yay! So glad you liked it :) ^ ^
@@TheBrassTeacher also saying fff instead of puf is very helpful at least for me.
@@SlashnKashmir yes, just so long as you're not putting your teeth over your lips its all good :)
Anyone know where to find piccolo-trombone music/playing guides? I'm only using this video for using the mouthpiece but I really need help with playing the actual instrument.
Kaley Miller well I don't know any in particular but I just search trumpet guiders and look from there also look on the side of the video on youtube
For trumpet it is working please
iconic 👍
starting trumpet and found this, can you reccomend anything for trumpet? or do you?
hi i just wanted to ask i am grade 8 in trumpet but i loved to start the french horn. I did but i am finding it very difficult i can buzz into the instrument and make notes but i cant keep it consistent. Is their anything i can do to stop this?
Hiya! So it might be for a number of reasons. The mouthpiece size from trumpet to french horn is similar but the set up is slightly different. You'll need 1 third on top and 2 thirds below which will feel really strange at first. Another reason might be that more air is needed for French horn as it has longer tubes than trumpet. That might be another reason why you're finding it difficult to make a strong sound.
Try keeping a piece of paper pinned to a wall just by blowing on it. Then go back to the horn and see if you can feel a difference in the volume of air you're putting out. It should help :)
Is this the only video you have done?
More videos to come soon! Thanks for your interest Debbie!
More videos are here Debbie!! I'm back in the UK now so I'll be making lots more vids! :) Hope you keep watching & liking them! :) Let me know if you have any video requests!

Let’s see here,blowing a raspberry,check,refine it,can’t!!!!
Keep working on it Timothy! I believe in you!
The Brass Teacher how long do you think it’s going to take?!
@@TheTimothy8136 it shouldn't take too long maybe a couple of lessons :) it might be that the mouthpiece is too big or too small if you are having real difficulties
The Brass Teacher I would like to get the lip buzz first before I use a trumpet, any idea on how I can get it without any practice?
The Brass Teacher or do you give online lessons for the lip buzz?
Hello, The Brass Teacher.
I have a concern: I am only 11 and I don't have a brass insturment. The reason I watched this video was because I wanted to prove to my parents that I am just as capable buzzing or playing a brass just as well as I play a woodwind. The problem is, I am having trouble with this, and I am worried I won't be able to get a brass. Any way you could possibly help me?
- A very scared and worried girl.
Hiya! Aw don't be scared or worried! It takes a while to refine a buzz- don't worry! :) If you can practice on a mouthpiece it makes all the difference! Keep those corners down and remember to be like a grouper fish :)
Don't give up on playing! :)
The Brass Teacher!
Thank you! ^^
Buzzing (lips or mouthpiece) is an excellent way to play wrong and with tension.
I know this is old, but do you know how to get the breathiness out of the buzzing? I play trumpet, which i know is loads easier than a french horn, and ive been trying for months to get that great resonance from buzzing the mouthpiece
Hi Louie, thanks for watching! If you mean buzzing without the instrument- I would pump as much air as possible through the mouthpiece and imagine it travelling straight through the mouthpiece and out again. You can improve your air flow by blowing onto a piece of paper on a wall- and trying to keep it on the wall with just your breath. Then return to the trumpet and see how much your sound quality has improved. Hope this works! :)
When blowing a piece of paper onto a wall, is it a closed aperture or an open one?
Hi Louise! Open :) Hope you're still playing. To get the breathiness out of the buzz you've gotta direct that air flow straight into the horn at a constant speed. Try that :)
Beauty and funny :)
Best thing of this video is, i got the solution of "Cheek pump "(like a balloon).
the solution is "Stretch lips Down"
I still can't do the
raspberries
Do you have any ways to buzz easily?
Hi Hans Liao, thanks for commenting! If you have a mouthpiece to hand, its useful to buzz along with the video. Also if you do it in front of the mirror, you can see if it looks similar to my buzz. Thanks for watching :)
Some top players can't buzz. Nobody mentioned it years ago when I took lessons and the standing wave inside the trumpet takes over after the initial attack that can happen even with soft "breath attacks" coming out of nothing. But if you can buzz well I think you have the best chances of developing a a superior technique (no problems coming up later), it trains the embouchure muscles and you can use it for warming up in the car, on the bike etc... If you have a talent for it then your lips feel fine during vibration but mine feel irritated very soon and I can't get high so I don't know what to do next. Obvious is to think the vibration is too forceful but I didn't find another "lighter" way yet.
Hey Jean-Pierre, thanks for watching! :) That's very strange that they didn't mention it! :O As it is the fundamental part of brass playing. The trick is with buzzing, is that at first - don't do it for very long otherwise your lips will tingle a lot and it will feel very tickly and irritating. Try and do a few minutes of buzzing a couple of times a day to get your lips used to playing. After a week you'll be much more used to it and it will help you when you pick up your trumpet to play :) Hope this helps - keep watching and don't forget to subscribe! :)

Hello! Thanks for watching. Ok, imagine you are pouting for a photo, now try and buzz! That should get you to the right shape for your lips. Remember to take a big deep breath, blow a big raspberry and then tighten your lips!

I think I may have just spat all over my keyboard. Amazing video though!
I did all you said but I still play too low:(
Okay, try again and tighten those lips a bit :)
i dont know why but when i tried to buzz ,there is just air come out from my mouth
This is a great analogy! Well done. I love this, brass players helping one another : )
