It's a dance style also called Ghoomar which is local to Rajasthan, the Rajput home where the movie is set. And yes it is still practiced today including the flaming pots on top. It's mostly a dance form with a cultural significance which is carried forward by successive generations of certain communities.

    Some facts about this song:
    1. The whole fort u saw, was actually in a studio. They weren't allowed to shoot in the actual fort (for some political reasons). So they recreated the whole fort in the studio.
    2. The lehenga deepika wore in this song was 30kg in weight and worth 2 crore rupees (250k $). 🤯
    3. She twirled over 66 times for this song. 🥴

But one thing is that the people from different regions have a certain body language when they dance so even if you try to do their dance form it's not so easy to look this effortless. The Song is Ghoomar and that is a Folk dance from Rajasthan. The ghoomar means to rotate. So this dance style have lot of rotations performed during the dance. The dance with fire pots placed on head is another form of Dance in Rajasthan that is called "Chari Dance" Chari is that metal pot which have fire placed in it.
So in this song shoqcases two dance styles of Rajasthan. If you want to see and hear the real Ghoomar then can listen to a Rajaathani song "Mahri ghoomar che nakhrali re maa"

FINALLY!!! I have been crying hoarse since MONTHS in comments and during feature Friday live for this song! This song single handedly is responsible for the boom in reaction channels targetting Indian content imo :P Ghoomar refers to a traditional folkdance form from the western state of Rajasthan, known for its forts, palaces, desert region, culture, food, colorful attire, and music of course. The instrument you guys love, Sarangi, also is a key feature of Rajasthani folk music. In this song, the instrument you point out in the end is Shehnai - its mostly used in ceremonial settings, like weddings, festivals, massive prayer ceremonies etc., often while welcoming guests.

Thanks, the Ghoomar or Jhumar is traditional folk dance from the Royal state of Rajasthan (Land of Kings)-Northwest India, state of Royal palaces. Ghoomar means twirl or spin or pirouette from Hindi word-Ghoomna - spin around. The Royal Rajput family came to adopt the dance form from the Bhil tribe community, an indigenous people, a very unique history. The Chari folk dance of the state (welcome dance and is a significance of goodness), the women hold balance chari or brass pots ignited with the cotton seeds dipped in oil, performed on festival occasions. Deepika Padukone performed about 66 twirls, the dance song took 4 days to complete, she wore about 20-30 kgs of heavy costume attire.

I honestly think, that yes we are giving a lot of appreciation to Deepika. But, don't forget the director of this movie-Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He is extremely strict about details. in fact, he is the music composer too. he participates in choreography sessions also. He hires top fashion designers to study the history, go through archeological researches to understand what kind of cloths people used to wear back then. Same goes for the set design etc. The amount of efforts he puts into this is just limitless.

5 elements .. 1. Fire, 2. Water, 3. Air, 4. Earth, 5. Ether(empty space) .. are the core of Indian culture .. all our festivals, weddings, religious rituals, Ayurveda system, Yoga .. anything and everything .. is about these 5 elements.
That's why fire here is significant.

This is a combination of two different folk dances of Rajasthan a western state in India... so Ghoomer word's literal meaning is keep circling around at your place also in circle.... so basically like earth.... the fire pots are used in Chari dance ( chari means metal pot... in this dance they are half filled with sand to make a
balance and then covered with a deep cover and then a coal or something else is put and lit before the dance) ... the dress is called Lehenga Choli meaning skirt and blouse and a duppatta Or a big veil you can say.... it is sort of traditional dress of Rajasthan especially for folk dances because it gives extra grace to the dance also while making turns in ghoomer it spreads and looks gorgeous.... you can try looking for some folk dances of Rajasthan and you might find some folk song videos on UA-cam of both the dances separately ....
I would definitely like to add that you two are beautiful and have good knowledge of music and that's why you enjoy all these and i love your reactions....

Hi Efra & Waleska, just to give you a small esneak on how much Indian population understands Music, at one time not long ago and is still prevelant in small cities in India, when the bridegroom and his family use to visit Brides family for the first time, they used to ask whether bride can sing or any she can play any musical instrument. And the bride has to sing if she can too understand her taste of music. And if she sings well than she can teach her offsprings. So if you go to any house in India, you will find atleast one person singing well and understands music.
