In this critique you’ll learn about blending modes in digital painting software. Blending modes are a tool that can help fix paintings on the fly, create cool effects, and try new ideas quickly. The critique shows how to make quick changes through blending modes and how to reinforce the overall round form of complicated materials. It also teaches you how to create a magical spell effect that emits light and how to adjust colors and values as needed. There’s several different types of blending modes for you to try within Photoshop, including multiply, screen, overlay, soft light, hard light, color, hue, saturation, and luminosity. It’s important to experiment with blending modes to find the best one for the desired effect.

I appreciate this breakdown! I didn’t even see the issues you had, it is pretty amazing how a few simple blending modes can adjust value in a meaningful way without losing any detail.

Cool
In the instructor's critique of this assignment, I wanted to know if the model's hair shouldn't have been given some highlights from the glow of the fire. Wouldn't the hard edge on the gown from the illumination of the fire have been more diffuse? I would have liked to see the instructor enhance the student's fire rather than delete it for his rather incomplete rendering even though I thought his color ideas were better. Interesting.
It depends on the material of the gown. If it is a matte surface, the light does tend to diffuse a lot, especially given the softness of the flames, but if the material was satin for instance, it would pick up on the specular highlights. And yes, the hair would react. Have confidence in your own observations 😊
