Wonderful! I like what this guy said.
Obama is sending more troops to Afghanistan and gets the Nobel Peace Prize.
Makes the Nobel Prize in to even more of a joke than it was when they gave it to Yassar Arafat, PW deKlerk, Teddy Roosevelt or Paul Krugman.

This is why I respect and admire Cornel West so much. I've heard 100 different opinions on Obama and the peace prize and never has ONE person mentioned "I wish his mother and father had lived to see this moment."
It's always the rhetoric of whether he deserves it or not, which Brother West does discuss, but only after giving sincere congrats and heartfelt wishes for The President's family. That's class. That's a perspective I wish more people naturally shared -- including myself.

@ColdGripHandle A black elder tells me that when Dr. King visited Baltimore in 1967 he said to some group something to the effect that "The real difference between us and our bemused white brethren is not that they're free and we're not, but that we KNOW we're not free while they believe they are."

Giving Obama the Peace Prize was like giving Danica Patrick a Safe Driving Certificate. Bu then again, Henry Kissinger and Menachem Begin also won the Nobel Peace Prize.

NOT ONLY DOES HE DESERVE IT but I am rather shocked & saddened by all the people who don't realize why he deserves it, who feel their judgement is superior to the Nobel Committee, & who at the same time do nothing to better inform themselves or reconsider their prejudice against Obama in light of this or many dozens of other obvious indicators that Obama is an exceptionally positive&inspiring leader. He gives me (& BILLIONS of others) real & enduring hope for our collective future. Peace to ALL.

Well to be fair he DID own an armament manufacturing company. He had the key role in reshaping the iron manufacturer Bofors to a modern cannon manufacturer and chemical industry and is strongly associated with a 40 mm anti-aircraft gun based on a Bofors design. A premature obituary of Nobel by a French newspaper, condemning him for his invention of dynamite, is said to have brought about his decision to leave a better legacy after his death.

@eastbaybochat I've actually MET a number of Cornel West's students, and they all describe him aa a GREAT teacher. They talk about the infectious enthusiasm that he brings to teaching, They talk about how he relishes the life of the mind, and encourages students to do likewise. So, I guess a lot depends on WHO you talk to.

There are a million reasons for doing anything, and the ones cited are not always the driver.
4 generations ago, we were divided over whether blacks were human or not. For 2 generations we have been divided over whether fetuses are human or not.
No one is willing to go to war over it.
But if there were a war, they will use every moral issue they can find to motivate the troops.

@Petrhrabal What "hippies" are you referring to? Incidently, hippies were rarely if ever Marxists. But I do recall reading that Soviet propagandists often used the word "hippies" to contemptuously describe those known in the West as the "new left." It appears that BOTH Soviet and Western ruling elites despised dissidents. Fortunately, our rulers didn't use tanks as yours did in Prague. But they didn't mind occasionally using state police or National Guard on campuses against "commie hippies."

I think people have not researched the history of the Nobel Peace Prize. Cornel West is very accomplished and intelligent. I need to preface my statement that he gets it wrong in this video - dead wrong.
Obama inherited two wars. He was highly critical of the war in Iraq. People can disagree with the precedent by why Obama received the prize but the awarding of the prize was solid.

@lakeeriejew Sorry. That's not how RATIONAL discussion works. if YOU make a charge against someone, then YOU must offer an argument to PROVE it, making allusion (where need be) to supporting evidence. You may NOT simply state your claim and then ask your ADVERSARY to seek out the evidence for YOUR claim. You must provide that evidence. Therefore, I again ask you to MAKE AN ARGUMENT to support your charges against West.

My point was that while Dr. West's judgment of Obama, past recipients, and the Nobel Peace Prize committee-though apparently correct-was harsh and exacting, and that even if the law of retribution required that someone must do likewise to him, your cavil avoided the substantive issues on which you could have based your objection and remained-because of your being offended-upon the personal level, which is of no use in intellectual discourse.
