    Lyrics:
'll say goodbye to all my sorrow
And by tomorrow I'll be on my way
I guess the Lord must be in New York City
I'm so tired of getting nowhere
    Seein' my prayers goin' unanswered
I guess the Lord must be in New York City
Well, here I am, Lord, knockin' at your back door, hmm
Ain't it wonderful to be where I've always wanted to be?
For the first time, I'll breathe free
    Here in New York City
Say goodbye to all my sorrow
And by tomorrow I'll be on my way
I guess the Lord must be in New York City
    So tired of getting nowhere
And seein' my prayers goin' unanswered
I guess the Lord must be in New York City
Well, here I am, Lord, knockin' at your back door, hmm
Ain't it wonderful to be where I've always wanted to be?
For the first time, I'll breathe free
    Here in New York City

Besides the voice, the best thing about Harry Nilsson was that he never pretended to be anything other than what he was. What a talent; taken far too soon. RIP Harry...

There’s just something about this song that sounds so apropos when you wake up early in the morning and hear it on a radio or something and you’re not fully awake yet.
This song takes you to that happy place. It’s like a walk through a beautiful park on a sunny morning or even a walk in the suburbs under shady trees overhead on those old fashioned looking broad sidewalks, rows of older but well maintained houses on both sides, lovely property and gardens, those old fashioned metal fences lining people’s porches, park benches around and people out walking their dogs. Even feeling like you’re on something! 😇

Harry Nilsson is/was one of my favorite composers and singers. He was also greatly admired by John Lennon and Ringo Starr of the Beatles. Nilsson died in 1994, so his music genius stopped by then. This song was also made popular in the movie 'You've Got Mail.'

Love the comments. Love Harry. Such an amazing song with the wonderful arrangement by George Tipton (who also conducted) and production by Rick Jarrard. Listen to it with headphones and hear the guitar flipping between the two chords, then the banjo jangling overlayed with the guitar licks, and then the strings which seem a bit understated, but embellish and connect all the sounds to compliment as always, Harry's perfect vocal and tone, with his 2nd vocal adding so much depth!! Such a gem and just WOW!!! I play this for younger people who tell me, "Old music is so boring"... Really? This is a great song to use to teach them to learn to listen!! Always been a favorite of mine. Dig, DmGrk

Where have all the great singers, composers
and musicians gone?!? I want to like today’s music, but it just doesn’t hold up. The music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s will, in large measure, continue to be relevant. Today’s crap, not so much.

Crazy. I bought that "single" at a record shop in Auckland,NZ. I bought it thinking, " Who is this Buck Earl singing Nilsson's songs?" Hah! Harry's sharp wit. "Buck" is Jon Voight's character in the movie Midnight Cowboy.

This was written for the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy, but it was rejected, apparently. Dylan's Lay Lady Lay was also written for the same purpose, but he procrastinated.

I had never listened to this song from beginning to end....However, reminds me of good ole times of my home, Ontario, California. I saw a video clip of NY (The Bronx specifically I think) and this song came on during video and just brought everything together especially before I leave this earth to go with The Lord...God bless America and New York City. And thanks to Harry Nilsson. Can't believe he's left us...............

I LOVE Mr. Nilsson. When John Lennon and Paul McCartney were in awe - that kind of says it all. *This was going to be the main them to - Midnight Cowboy - but.....
