Obviously, Mike was a profound innovator, and he was investigating what “other” sounds he could use to extend his virtuosity and quest for more aural accessibility.
Beautiful. Michael Brecker and Allan Holdsworth were great friends and their influence on each other was huge. Allan’s synthax compositions were so ahead of anything. Obviously Michael tuned into Allan’s synth concept and made it is own. They are some of the greatest musicians players musical minds ever. Alan Pasqua must be mentioned here also. Can’t say enough.
I dont undersatdn the purpose of this electronic instrument. We already have the keyboard . Is s unnecesary musician complication. Cant recall ANY famous musician due to his EIW virtuossism...
It’s a versatile midi instrument for sax players who have spent years practicing saxophone, and can therefore play synths using their sax fingerings and not learn piano fingerings. PLUS the EWI is a synth w breath control AND an 8 octave range!
Electronic sounds can be played with real expression on ewi. Unlike keyboard with mod wheel which sounds like akeyboard with someone twirling knobs. I recall Nyle Steiner, Michael Brecker and Bob Mintzer for their very musical EWI playing among other things. Michael told me he liked it because he. Ouldfo things he couldnt do on tenor- enough said-because he could do almost anything on tenor. I bought the original EWI on back order the next day
Check out Masato Honda: ua-cam.com/video/5ZZb8AgKVQs/v-deo.html He is very famous here in Japan for his ability to breathe life (literally... 😄)into this instrument.
to tell the trueth , i think saxophone succed among people is due to its characteristic timber, tone and personality of every player. EWI has its onw challenges i get it but those can be achieved within the keyborad world. SAx is a winf instrument and ewi is not. All domes down to it i guess. Air and embouchure are very personal and ewi is just a bank of digital tones...
Thank you for putting this together!!
And, BRAVO to Bob Mintzer, who also plays so beautifully on the tenor saxophone and the EWI…..

If you’ll recall, Mike also played drums, which gave him greater access to the intimate workings of his rhythmic sensibility.
Bueno, gracias Amigo

Just another tool in a musicians arsenal. Also, who wants to carry around a keyboard.
