Ah, actually is common to implement an esxi host or what you like to virtualize your hardware. And inside to build at least a firewall. Many brands are working on asics card to be used (whit some modules) by vmware or in pass trough.
For bandwidth optimization and or cpu offload.

Don't do that... Bills for electricity will kill u. Old pcs consumes crazy amount of power - 300W and more!!! Much better idea is buy for example HP T610 plus - it takes 20W I belivie so electricity bill will not be so high like in case old ATX desktop...

@@singxaylor9496 It depends... T620 has expansion slot, without plus has not. You can use USB adapters to RJ45 as well - at least with Pfsense, so you can buy T620 and use USB cards and eventually use switch for port expansion if you need connect more devices via UTP cable. Instead this you can use openwrt - it's free too. Then: ua-cam.com/video/aqvbAQmAbAU/v-deo.html and you're set...Next to your virtual LAN NIC you can assign a firewall zone and then apply firewall rules to your virtual interface by ponting that firewall zone as source or destination like showed here: ua-cam.com/video/reMrbOl-anM/v-deo.html ...If you have 2nd, unused, router and it is supported by openwrt too, you can use it instead smart switch this way: ua-cam.com/video/yCV-08tSwe8/v-deo.html

if you connect more lan cards does that mean more lan ports and if you would connect a wifi card would it be able to be able to transfer wireless signals for wifi devices to be able to use it

Surprised no one answered this. Yes, you can run these things on lowbie hardware. Using a Fx-4130 and 8 gig ddr3 and an old mechanical hard drive for my set up. Works like a charm. You can try many diff firewalls too. See which ones you like

One is for the WAN (modem, the internet) the second is for LAN (wired network) and the third one is WLAN ( wireless local network) that is useful for business that want to provide guests with wife, but want to separate some traffic.

Completely wrong.
The first thing when you build a router or firewall machine is to identify the band of interfaces and their bus.
So, integrated card and pci X card are on the same bus I suppose (study motherboard's chipset architecture) ,and pci 33/66 is on a slower bus.
After you need to consider cpu, pci and pciX access speed to memory to evaluate the architecture of your future Lan.
Wan is usually slower then other connections.
So pci should be used for Wan. The others for lan/wlan.
And this is just for routing.
For a software firewall you need to consider computational weight on cpu (roule base analisys, deep inspection, alg, rules by application or l7 firewall etc..) for every packet or load on your interfaces.
This is the way in most serous servers you can see a full line of pci express hot swap slots, instead of standard pci.
And last but more important, some cards (especially to work for on vmware vxlans and ssl tunnels) are plenty of asics to do cpu offload on some flow operations.
