  • 10000 BHP Diesel Electric terminal tug Svitzer "Mulga", Hull no. 1093 built at ASL Shipyard Singapore, PM Julien Melot.
    Official sea trials Singapore OPL.
Crash stop manoeuvre, full speed astern (about 12 knots). The aft deck gets completely submerged as the stern dives deep when the two azimut thrusters are swiftly rotated 180 degrees to propel full MCR ahead.
At full speed astern, we measured the time from the moment the thrusters are rotated from astern to ahead until the boat comes to a complete stop.

I always wanted to do that, never got to in my time at sea, I had friends who were tug skippers and we used to talk about doing it, never did. Absolutely amazing 12knots to stop like that… brilliant !
